Would an MTV "Icon" Show Help Prince???

O.K., MTV has saluted Madonna and Janet Jackson as "Icons." MTV honored JJ and M. Do you think that Prince could use the same recognition? Would it help rejuvenate is "commercial" career?

I don't remember Madonna being an Icon (in the formal, "MTV Icon Special" sense, at least); I think Janet, Metallica and Aerosmith are the only ones to have been given that honor.

In terms of publicity, it would help Prince. But then we, the fans, would have to deal with the Neptunes covering "Gett Off," Justin Timberlake covering "Kiss," Dashboard Confessional covering "When Doves Cry," Creed covering "7" or something. Granted, I like two of the four acts I just mentioned (and, the more I think about it, the more I would like to hear an NERD cover of "Gett Off"), but I don't think the songs would be serviced well through it.

But I'm just rambling. The point is, I would flinch upon seeing the setlist/performers (given that it's MTV... and the man himself would probably only get 5 minutes plus the end credits to play), but there's a possibility that it could help Prince connect with a younger audience.

PRINCE don't need an ICON show to help him..he's already doing well, with all the press, video play, new album and song!

um...just the concert, sell outs...and etc.

Madonna turned down the Icon tribute. she was the first to be asked.

It might help him reach a younger audience, but we don't need a televised concert of other people singing Prince songs. Of course, they invite the person they're saluting to perform at the end, which WOULD be nice, but in the grand scheme of things, I'm not enthused by the idea.

Princ is an ICON: MTV just didn't know it, and they still don't.

They give that "Honor" to who they believe are hot acts(not Icons) at the moment, Have you seen those so call list of Icons, Performers and greatest voices just to name a few. P only appeared on one that I can remember, The Icon list and he was at #200 or something that's an insult.

On the MTV icon of janet Jackson, Macy gray does a (rather odd) cover of the great track "Love will never do (without you)" and on bass, behind her, on her right, theres a bloke with red hair! I swear that is Prince in some stupid (but funny) disguise!

Anyone else seen or remembers this?

If that is prince, it definately shows his funnier side!

Nah, I don't think so.
They should carry on giving their awards to Britney's and Justin's of this world.

Now, if he was up for a DIVA award.....I'd like that REAL well biggrin

or JC Chavez singin' Dirty Mind mad nooooo!!!!!
Disasters would surely happen if MTV were involved. Like on the Metallica ICON Show, when Avril Lavigne sung "Fuel" wall
If I were one of the Metallica's band member I'd feel ofended instead of honored with that....pretty lame...
Forget MTV...the Matrix took over them... eek

I really don't need to hear Avril Lasagne and Fred Durst performing a rousing rendition of "Arms of Orion", thank you.

LMAO! I remember that version...VERY FUNKTIFIED! I liked it!
Prince was high on Macy at that time, so it wouldn't surprise me
if that was him....nicely kept secret if it is.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

...Justin Timberlake covering "Kiss,"....

that would be enough to make me continue the black serial killer legacy started by that crazy man and his stepson

JT imitating MJ and gropin JJ and walking away is bad enough. A clean shot to the head S.W.A.T. style if he tried to come near the Purple funk... lol

I think it would help introduce more younger people 2 P's music. It helped Janet Jackson get exposed 2 a "younger" crowd when she did it 3 years ago.

The only problem I could see with the show is that everyone will want 2 perform something from the PR album. I don't know about any of u, but I am Purple Rained OUT! I hope he retires ALL of those songs 4 good.

i doubt it had that sort of effect for her career. she was already getting exposure to that audience with videos and radio. on a massive level. she is, even now, still an act that plays well (and primarily) to a "young" crowd.
