Can someone tell me what the heck is a "fake" fan?

I'm over on the NPGMC forums, and this person complains about fake fans being at the concert. What are these creatures?

It was probably the same person who started the "If-you-haven't-been-a-fan-forever-you-aren't-a-real-fan" thread on here.

A know all, know fuck all.

Fake fans are basically passive, non hardcore fans/obsessed fans. Their favorite song is Purple Rain or something from that album, they like Prince when he is in the public eye but forget his name (both of them) when he isn't.

What's the difference between a fake fan, a casual fan, and just a plain ol' sane person?

There are 2 types of fake fans:

1. The fan who is a bandwagon hopper and only digs Prince when he is in vogue . This type of fan has trouble naming Prince albums after "Purple Rain", and "Diamonds and Pearls." This type of fan come out to the concerts, but if Prince sings "Days of Wild" or "The One" they don't know the words.

2. This is a fan who loves Prince so much that they live their life through him, yet they play it off as if they hate every new album and tour, but in reality they have stacks of bootlegs and are the 1st in line for the new album/concert/whatever.

-Type one is not always a fan but says they always were.

-Type two pretends to be semi disinterested in Prince when in fact they are on prince.org every single day.

"Fake" fan is a stupid term, but they probably mean fans who just want to hear the Purple Rain album, plus maybe Kiss and Raspberry Beret. They aren't big Prince fans. They are fans of Prince's hit songs.

U probably won't respond, but a fake Prince fan is the hypocrites that's popping up now. People jumping on his bandwagon because its trendy, the ones that cast him aside because his music after Purple Rain didn't sound like Purple Rain. The so-called fans that would rather listen to other artists that were only half-ass imitations of him,the ones that gobbles up all the tickets from the real fans, only to complain about his performance later.Prince never left us or let us down, but can any of the "fams" say the same?

You know, sometimes people just wanna go to a concert to hear some songs they like. Sometimes people go on dates to concerts. Sometimes people just like enjoying real music being made. There are a thousand and twelve reasons a person can go to a concert without having to know every little last bit of lyric and trivia about the artist playing, and guess what? All 1,012 reasons are NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! razz

Concerts: Not just for hardcore fanatics anymore.

I'd say a fake fan is someone that just follows because something is trendy, they need other people to like it for them to feel safe.
I'd probably imagine there has been a surge of these types since the grammys, whereby seeing Prince with Beyonce made it ok to like Prince again and having the likes of Outkast ,The Darkness,Foo Fighters and Josh Hommes/PJ Harvey etc either name dropping P or covering his songs means these fake fans dont really have to think for themselves.
I wonder who it will be next month.

Are fake fans similiar to the faM types who, when Prince makes a personal appreciation of a particular musical (or otherwise) artist known, suddenly realize that they're suddenly "into" that same artist too?

How many obsessives suddenly decided they, too, like this artist or that artist, or this thing or that thing, merely because their idol PRINCE does? I've seen lots of "fake fans" proclaiming to like or be into or interested in something or someone that Prince is, just to kiss ass...and that covers everything from music to fashion to religion to food.

Then when Prince discards something or gets over it, the "fake fans" suddenly do too, until they find out what the next thing Prince is into and then they're suddenly into THAT.

They're the FAKE FANS, if you ask me.

"Fake fans" as a term is in some ways even more unintelligent than "haters" because it suggests a sort of "we saw him first" mentality. It only really makes sense if it refers specifically to people who claim to be respect and enjoy Prince's music, when in reality they don't. In which case lawd only knows why they'd bother going to the concerts.

Frankly, i think "haters", "fake fans" and "fams" should all get together in some huge building and make sweet, sweet lurrrve until this issue goes away. cool

You know, it's customary for cults to pressure followers to prove devotion to their leader. So, be afraid when folks start talking about "fake fans" and drawing lines of demarcation ... omg

Well well, no need to get testy.

I think the whole "fake fan" theory is just some made up bullshit by fanatical, mentally ill people actually. There is no such thing, only the made up delusions of an ill mind. Defensive, obsessive, and just plain psychotic. Almost stalker material, know what I mean?
