Musicology - My Review

I know theres a lot, but I figured I'd put one up in the middle of it all..

Musicology- I didnt dig this at first at all.. thought and still think its weak to lead this album off with a single like this.. Im not talking about the quality of the song, I think its a great funky song, even the lyrics are decent for what it is... Funky bass line, the drums are tight and it has a lot of humor to it.. I think its a great way to start an album, just not as a lead off single. The first track that gives the indication that there will be a lot of "reflection".

Illusion Coma Pimp and Circumstance- It lives up to its name.. not gonna lie, its the funkiest track on the album. Prince has tried this type of song many times in the last 13/14 years.. it finally work. I dont think he should pursue any type of musical album with this theme behind it, but a song here an there like this gives a great leverage. I honestly find myself singing this all the time and I like the story.

A Million Days
- Great lyrics, and perhaps a great song for a single. The best part of the song is the guitar riffs. The hook isnt great, and neither is the melody (At least not after continual rotation for 3 days).. I have a feeling my mind could change after more repitition, but I think its a good song, and he honestly hasnt done or sounding this way since the Gold Experience. I wish there was more of a solo, like a lot of songs on here.. There are some great guitar moments, but their short and cute, not long enough IMO. Im not crazy aobut the "talk" towards the middle of the song.

Life O' The Party
- Drums and bass line are very funky.. The "party" talk and the female voice are kindof cheesy.. I took her out of the intro to the song.. it sounds much better..

Call My Name- Nice soul ballad.. I like the lyrics and the maturity that lies beneath the whole concept of this song. A decent track, but not the best.

Cinnamon Girl- I like the drums and the intro to this song. but it isnt great.. I can see myself getting tired quick of this track.. Its not spectacular at all.

What Do You Want Me 2 Do?
Drum machine is awsme.. so are the guitar licks here and there.. Its a definant mellow track but it doesnt hit any high points in me.. its almost a filler, but a good filler smile

The Marrying Kind - Here's where it gets interesting.. One the highlights of the entire album. I think this song is lyrically and musically top notch. I wish it was longer, but it flows into another great melody.. There have been a lot of songs prince has written that are simular, but this one holds in own in a very good way.

If Eye Was The Man In Your Life- It starts out kindof lame, but when those drums kick in, the piano gets me goin and I totally dig his flow when he's singing.. This is another one that is just too short.. Needed a nice minute or two solo at the end...

On The Couch - Totally soul. Background vocals are top notch, and so is the guitar we faintly hear here and there.. I like this one, its very soulful and interesting.

Dear Mr. Man - Just like its been said before, it sounds 70s inspired lyrically and musically. I like it, I can groove to this and its very different from Prince's ordinary sound.. the horn hook isnt a big highlight, would have preferred a guitar hook than the horns, but thats not important, the message is.. and I dig it.

Reflection- It was a little strange to see this as the last track. I never saw this as a closing track for Prince, but now I do.. I think this song should be one of his singles, if he was to release another song.. I've played this many times in the last year aound people, and I havent met a person who dislikes it.. and its catchy. Dont forget about this track just cause its been around. Its a strong point of the album. and with a little age, its gotten better. Nice song.

This isnt a masterpiece, nor his best. I like the album though, I think his performance is relaxed, and he honestly sounds happy.. I had different expectations of this album before it dropped, I expected more guitar, but that doesnt make me dislike it, I havent stopped listening to it since I bought it.. So I think it should be given a few spins and a chance.

i would agree with most of that.

cinnamon girl i think is really good. i like the lyrics. it addresses a problem going on in the U.S. still but it really went on right after 9-11. prejudice against people who look muslim. that really bothered me after 9-11, the fact that an entire group of people were looked at unfavorably. i was glad to hear prince sing this, because i was starting to get the impression that he was very judgmental against those who did not have the same religious beliefs as him.

Didn't think of it in that way. Good explanation. biggrin

I really like this song even though it is very "pop". I think this is the "cream" of this album that will be appealing to the masses but some fans will hate because of how "pop" it sounds.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

the only thing I donĀ“t like very much about Cinnamon Girl is the chorus, too simple imo

but I still enjoy the song and the lyrics show the humanistic side of Prince that I like
so much
