TRIBUTE TO JAMES BROWN: JACKSON THERE, NOT PRINCE...MY HEART IS NOW BROKEN...

I really don't know what's wrong with Prince. Last night's BET awards presented a terrific opportunity to pay respect to James Brown. Michael Jackson was there...where was Prince. Here's too mega superstars who were hugely influenced by JB, yet only MJ showed up. What happened?

I must, however, admit that while I am not a fan of MJ...never have been...he sure knows how to move. It would've been great, all differences and pettiness aside, to see MJ and Prince side by side honoring this great ICON named James Brown.

Rude Boy lost out on a great opportunity to reconnect with his fans and with the black community...

I agree. I said the same thing last night. I mean, when I was listening to James Brown do Sex Machine last night, and he had the band stop on the 1, all I could think about is how much Prince has copied/incorporated James Brown showmanship. He could have at least been there to show his appreciation.

Hi, i am from italy (sorry for my poor english) and maybe i know why prince did not went there, i remember when james brown perfomed here in italy at the pavarotti and frineds last year, james brown said to a journalist, that nobody can be the james brown of the 2000, especially Prince, so when I red this on the italian newspaper, for me was very strange, because i tought that james brown and prince they were friends, so I think James brown hate prince, and on the other side prince hate james brown (but of course not his music) sorry for my english but i am italian:)

If you saw the bootleg outtake from '83 with Prince and MJ onstage with JB, you'd know why he never wants to repeat the experience. He totally embarrassed himself (Mike wasn't that great either, for the record).

And if it is indeed true that JB does not like P, then that's truly a shame. I think that P will continue to alienate most everyone until no one on the planet digs him or his music.

Although...I do see him as an Amadeus figure. Mozart alienated everyone and was a true bastard. Yet, when he died, he got more respect and people finally realized how much of a genius he was...AND he was deaf in one ear.

I think that this could happen for P, but unfortunately I think he won't get his props until he dies...something tells me that he will die tragically...don't know why I feel this way, but I just do...

What's amusing is Prince in real-life keeps playing out the dramatic dilemma of his character in Purple Rain. Follow his own thing or play to the people? More truth than fiction.

Thank god he wasn't there. I would've lost a little shread of respect for him had he been at that low-rate, so-called awards show.

This is a pretty pathetic statement...
Don't you think paying tribute to someone on some shitty award show is just simply lame?
People who attend these kind of dumb shows are just attention craving/wanna feel important insecure people who need money...

Well, I could agree with you, but then I thought: Didn't P introduce TLC on some "shitty ass lame" awards show just 3 years ago? I think so! So, I stick by my previous statement. And no, I don't think that paying tribute to James Brown should be predicated on type of venue. It is simply the fact that without JB there would be no P, and that's that!

4 years ago... Remember why that was? Remember what he was wearing?
He was there just to be seen, pure promotion for the then upcoming "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic"...

It is simply the fact that without JB there would be no P, and that's that!

Bullshit... JB ain't his daddy...
JB isn't even his primary biggest influence...

So I stand by my statement...

Who cares about that shit? Really, award shows? Prince is better off staying at home and either chillin with his missus or else putting down some new songs himself. I'd hate it if P ever became one of those tired old acts who felt the need to "be seen" at every opportunity, TV show and award ceremony.

Also don't forget, Prince has never been one to admit his influences. He prefers to downplay the influence that other people had on his music and act as if he just dropped outta the sky one day. Well, that's his call. I wouldn't expect to see P at an award show like that, and I won't lose any sleep over it (and nor should you! smile )

If P can't even be bothered to pay respect at his own Parents funeral, whys he gonna pay respect to JB?

He's too busy respecting Larry every day...

if prince wants to give his props to james, i'm sure prince can get james on the phone and give his props privately and personally.

Stop trying to defend Prince's actions. He was a jerk for not showing up. Who cares if they honor J.B. at three awards, show some respect to the man that put the funk in all of our steps. Its not about whether or not the show is big time or low rate, Prince's presence on stage would have made it magic. Prince is in on punishment for a week!!
