Extra photos of Susan Moonsie would be nice.

speaking of Susan….there is the 1983 unreleased Vanity 6 album in the vault. We are familiar with tracks like “Vibrator” and the early version of “Sex Shooter”.Maybe they could add this album to one of the vault discs?

I don't think they're doing a Purple Rain set next year.

Wasn’t there a recent interview where Duane (if I’m not mistaken) basically confirmed that there will be a 40th anniversary SDE?

Check reply #11 smile

I’m glad you posted that, as it suggests there is no guarantee of a Purple Rain 40th release in 2024. It could be some subterfuge, though, to put us off the trail…will just have to wait and see

Really hope we get some good footage for this.. I feel like 83 First Avenue, PR Tour Show (not Syracuse), and the 84 Birthday Show, would really help encapsulate the era. Having all 3 available would be incredible.

Yes! That 83’ First Avenue show is legendary among longtime fans.I really hope it is included on this set.

this time,I hope they include a good, clear version of "G-Spot" (Prince's version). And if there really is a Vanity 6 version, include that version too!

While exact recording dates are not known, basic tracking for Prince’s original version likely took place in May 1983, at Prince’s Kiowa Trail Home Studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, USA. It was both considered for Vanity 6’s sophomore album as well as for Purple Rain and its title appears in versions of the script as late as October 1983. In the movie the song was to be performed by Prince. It was ultimately cut from the script before shooting commenced in November. (PrinceVault)

didn't Al Magnoli say that Prince submmitted 100 songs for possible inclusion in the movie? And didn't one of the NPG members say that he heard several Purple Rain outtakes that are,in his words, better than the released tracks? hmmm ok,here's the chance to release it all! Free these songs! lol

This is Morris Hayes talking about 5 Purple Rain era tracks and here’s the org thread it was mentioned on:

https://prince.org/msg/7/...6&pg=1

Indeed Albert Magnoli appears to have mentioned 100 songs with respect to Purple Rain but read this org thread:

https://prince.org/msg/7/467588

And defo read this Rolling Stone article:

https://www.rollingstone....iece-75944

Snippet from it, “Was the music already discussed at this point?
He said, “What about the music?” I said, “We want at least 12 songs. Do you want a double album?” He said he didn’t but that he had about 100 songs and they were all ready to go. He brought me back to my hotel and I had a message from Steve that said, “I’ll pick you up at 9 tomorrow morning and you can go to Prince’s house and listen to music.” I walked into his house that morning and went downstairs to his studio and we listened to 25 or 30 songs. I said, “There has to be a good reason for you to be onstage in a musical number. It has to be about the story of the character and how it drives you to the stage.” He said, “Okay, I understand.” We shook hands and I left with a few cassettes of 100 songs and a lyric sheet. I still have the cassettes in my storage space.”
There may or may not be something coming!

The original CD is great. You can't just put that on instead? These remasters are ponderous. Aaalllll this just to improve your shuffle mixes on Spotify? The 80s material isn't the problem, the 90s/00s material being brickwalled is the problem, you should all rally together to get that stuff remastered to be closer to the levels on the 80s CDs instead, not the other way around.

The orignal CD is *okay*, a proper remaster would be fantastic.

I didn't find the 1999 remaster ponderous, in terms of having a great tape transfer with great EQ it is my definitive version of the album, way ahead of the original CD and better than the EQ of the HDTracks version. Same with SOTT

[Edited 10/30/23 22:39pm]

'1999' is different because the original CD had the channels reversed and that weird shift in mastering eras when they re-added "D.M.S.R." to the tracklist.

SOTT was not that "dramatically" different than the Original CD. It just wasn't. And in the case of "It", it's actually markedly inferior to the original CD. The kick drums and the building climax are just plain weird and devoid of energy on the remaster.

You bring up EQ multiple times, that's the only real issue with the OG CDs, which is corrected instantly if you use a program with a dynamic EQ. The tape transfers themselves are damn good, they're basically flat transfers of the vinyl masters (which is why they need EQ correction, vinyl masters have higher treble range).

Shuffle mixes? I just want a Purple Rain that isn't paper thin sounding like the 80s CD and for it to get the glow up like 1999 did with a nice modern tape transfer, dynamic mastering AND great expansive EQ choices

In all cases the OG CDs have more dynamic range and had great initial tape transfers. They're not like those old Parliament CDs that were clearly mastered from 7th generation tape copies or anything. They just need a simple EQ adjustment that any program will do.

I disagree personally, but to each their own. For me I am just still excited for a high resolution remaster and more Vault tracks from that era - some people may not be as excited but that is cool too. I still stand by thinking a high resolution digital remaster is something I would very much want not unlike the 1999 remaster which is fantastic to my ears

i get a newsletter from nelson george. he mentions PR in the new one and links to his pieces at the time:

Two events this weekend made me recall very profound moments in my career and had me pulling out old pieces of writing for reference. November 4, 1984 Prince & the Revolution played the first show their tour following the blockbuster success of the film ‘Purple Rain.’ It was in Detroit, which had been a breakout market for Prince. I traveled there for Billboard magazine to review the show and was disappointed. The resulting review, I believe, led Prince to write “Bob George,” a track on his The Black Album that seemed to dis yours truly. There’s a long story connected to my relationship with young Prince (you go through the archives here you’ll find a long piece on Prince and I).

The funny thing is I lost my print copy of the offending review years ago. A fan sent a copy to me in the last year. The way it’s been scanned, its a little hard to follow, but bare with it. It harks back to an era when there was actual criticism in music criticism.

the clippings are here -

At this point with this coming up if they dont do proper issues of the protege side stuff then that stuff is never going to be released. 1984 was one of the greatest musical years for tons of great albums and many are already planning 40th anniversaries and issues so the estate better get on it, because come spring they will start to appear

I'm sure there will be a Purple Rain Super Deluxe with extra tracks. 40 years was the duration of P's recording career. Not sure about the incomplete, slightly fumbling Love and Sex from earlier deluxe with same title as the Love and Sex on Sign O' Times Super Deluxe. People are wired and confused enough already with these various juxtapositions. Especially with the inclusion of the porn-esque sooooo 80s sounding Father's Song. The Woke Crowd won't tolerate another abomination like that. Instead I would include a set from 'The Hookers', P's first protege group, with preferably a demo from Susan Moonsie making the loudest 'uh' and 'ahh' sounds.

I don't know why I'm so hung up on it being included, but I would LOVE a disc of the Michael Coombier incidental music. It's a huge part of the film, and it is really groovy stuff. Where/when else is this going to ever get a release?

Seeing how Schoolyard on the D&P SDE hasn’t led to Prince being cancelled, I wonder if Extralovable might be included on Purple Rain 40th anniversary SDE set, if there is such a thing?

Prince Vault says, “It is possible that the track [Extralovable] was worked on further in 1983, as some of the lyrics could be interpreted as referring to Dez Dickerson’s departure from the band [Hey Dez, don't U like my band?] and Wendy Melvoin’s arrival [Wait a minute, Break Wendy, uh].”

Might as well bang Lust Me Always on too!
There may or may not be something coming!
