Alice Through The Looking Glass: Prince's "Doop da doo doop" singing from about 20 seconds onwards is a guide for a horn section... and not meant to be there (I'm 99% sure). There's horn parts in Sheila E's live version. Not quite the same, but obviously what was intended to go there.

I wonder if they were ever recorded, or the Estate just didn't notice, or couldn't find the recordings?

[Edited 11/2/23 7:48am]

if you have heard the leaked version of "coco boys" he scats the horn lines... (1:44 ish into the song--that I don't have and have never heard) with real horns (or maybe synth) in the released (Mess) at about 1:35.

The real T is that they could've put another 4-5 songs on any of the disks. Two of the three vault disks are under an hour, the other is just slightly over.

And "5 Women" is already out. Why re-add it here?

another version maybe ... or a live version

nah, that's repetitive and unnecessary. He released the song. It's out. Leaves room for other stuff.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Because the released version of 5 Women is inferior in many ways, that's a good reason i think.

The scats are still there in the released version under the horns

You might be not the only one but come on we were waiting for a SDE release and now we have it, we still can't be satsified ! Personnaly, I like the whole set, don't listen to it much as we have so much material beside. So glad about the Glam Slam gig release, the outtakes that we used to have in not so good quality, the booklet... To sum up: I'm happy & will listen to it soon.

There's some good stuff going on in there, but I guess if you already disliked this era you will absolutely not like it 😂 IMO It's the same shit as when Prince was alive (loathe it upon release, listen for a few weeks, find the gems, move on)

Haha true. I'll prob go back to some of the old boot songs like Open Book, etc. but none of the new tracks really grabbed me like some of the 1999 SDE outtakes did. I do really like that alt version of Cream, though.

Finally managed to get my hands on it. I swear I'll actually buy it once I can afford it but in the meantime thank you so much for sharing your treasures with me. You know who you are.

I've had a quick skim of the singles and edits and there's nothing really there of interest to me. But the 3 Vault discs are actually pretty good overall. I'm sure many of you will be already somewhat familiar with a lot of these outtakes but they were pretty much all new to me. Aside from Tip O My Tongue. I have an El Debarge album with that song on it. I never knew Prince wrote it so that's something I learned today.

As for the rest, like I said they are mostly good. I'll need to spend a bit more time with them to fully appreciate it though. Alice Through The Looking Glass and Pain are among my favourites at this point. I was worried that it would be a lot of rap and other early 90s stuff I don't like but thankfully the outtakes are actually pretty varied. If there's any Prince fans out there on the fence about it or unsure based on their dislike of the period then I'd say just give it a chance. You may be pleasantly surprised. I was.

I find it very strange that none of the engineers was contacted for this SDE.
There were 9 engineers used :
Michael Koppelman
Tom Garneau
Keith KC Cohen
Matt Larson
Brian Poer
Steve Noonan
Tim Penn
Ray Hahnfeld
David Friedlander.
These guys could tell us so much more about the recording processes.
Or did I miss something here? Where they interviewed?
-
Same for the art department; 8 people were needed to create all the artwork. No information from them either.
Jeff Gold
Tom Recchion
Greg Ross
Stephanie Bennett (family from Roy?)
Joel Larson
Chris Mahne (hologram)
Sharon McCormack (hologram)
Peter Sarbo (hologram)
-
Missed opportunities?
-
And I didn’t know that Sheila E played on the song Diamonds And Pearls…

Not if you don’t care about the engineering, or the art

The engineering aspect is germane to fans because they spent time intimately with Prince in the studio during the albums construction.

Them holograms were futuristic tech back in the 90s. I care, but the Estate likely wouldn't want to call attention to the fact that they omitted the hologram from the SDE.

Yes the engineers can tell some decent stories, but I would rather hear from the band members. There is plenty of interviews on the net with engineers that have worked with prince. And in depth ones

Warners couldn’t find the masters to reproduce the hologram, so not the estate’s fault.

Nah, I'm with you. I thought "Blood On The Sheets" was kinda cool but none of the other lead-up singles grabbed me enough to bother listening to this set.

I noticed that they had a huge projection of the hologram "animation" on the video screens at Paisley Park at the the Launch event... So someone has the master file it seems.

The compnay that did the hologram back then said they still have all the files so they could replicate it if needed.

Yes that’s true 👍. Warners didn’t think to ask there though, as far as I understand. Someone involved in the design of SDE does now know that info but found out too late to consider including it (I passed on the details from Crown Roll Leaf I’d obtained).

lol that's great.

Estate: "Yeah, we uh, we-- we lost the masters! yeah, yeah. that's the ticket..."

Hologram company: "No worries bruh, we can rebuild it! We have the technology!"

Estate: ....................
