Darkside also makes me wish for versions like this of songs we know.
Prince fleshing out songs, trying things out, humming parts he wants to add later and rough vocals.
Better than tracks that weren’t intended for this album. (I’ll take those on another Originals release)

"Blood on the Sheets" is the more fleshed out version, but still without lyrics. Man, it really needs it. It's just riiiight there.

I was sharing with Fenwick my first-listen thoughts last night and put them into a Google doc here.

Is that a good thing!?
eek wink

Actually, I quite like this track, but similar vibe to Cream, which may be why it was rejected for the album.

Reminds me of Janet Jackson. Rhythm Nation type drums.
Not a bad thing, but not my favourite track.

Agree
Cool to hear the same sample from Gangster Glam and the ‘make it mellow’ break down he used in Everybody Get Up on the Act I tour

No, because that was recorded around the same time. I mean, how many damn songs have "Baby," "Girl," or Love and Sex" as the title w/ that guy? lol

Princevault notes:

Basic tracking for Prince’s original version took place on 1 October 1991 at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota (the day after Letter 4 Miles, the same day as the release of Prince and the New Power Generation’s album Diamonds And Pearls and the recording of Do U Wanna Rock?, I Pledge Allegiance To Your Love and Sweet Baby, two days before recording The Thunder Ballet).

2 of the 3 vault disks are under an hour, the other is barely over that.

Why isn't that other version of "Willing and Able" in there? or more mixes of "Gett Off," and the EP of "Cream?" There was plenty of room for some more stuff.

I mostly like what's there, but they slipped on a few tracks.

Hearing Diamonds and Pearls long version brought tears to my eyes.

I remember going to Tower Records after hearing that this version was on the Diamonds and Pearls CD single and being royally disappointed when it wasn't.

The only reasoning to this I can think of is because they are wanting to fit these things in the vinyl version.. I wish more than anything they would make an “ultimate expanded edition” (or some other title) CD version and stack that thing up to its limit..

I long for an 18 cd set like Dylan has for his “the cutting edge” bootleg series

Bruh.. reading a lot of y’all’s comments.. I’m actually shocked.. the vault material in this set is great.. if these tracks had (87) dated next to them y’all would be fawning.. if anything this has taught me not to read comments here before actually listening..

On Facebook Duane said Allegiance was from 1988. Hence why it wasn't included.

Maybe Princevault is incorrect

Work that fat is a great novelty track. Why this got shelved but other (more polished obv) borderline novelty songs like sexy mf and my name is prince even, got released (as singles!), idk. Id have preferred some of these songs like streetwalker or laurianne as b sides over all the remixes.

I knew Prince was trying to play catch up with New Jack Swing sounds of the 90's, but listening to the vault tracks it seems he had completely lost confidence in his own abilities.

Songs like 'Don't Say You Love Me' and 'Spirit' are just complete generic rip offs of better NJS songs, while some real gems like 'Open Book', 'Pain', 'Something Funky This Way Comes' and 'Get Blue' to name a few were completely passed over to cater for NJS lite stuff such as Jughead and Daddy Pop.

I think this is the only time in Prince's career where he was trying to copy rather than innovate, and some of the more soulful and funky vault stuff would have complemented the better D&P tracks (i.e. the funk soul and blues ones) than the ones trying to follow modern trends. Kind of glad they got this era out the way, as hopefully we can finally get a Parade Deluxe edition.

100% but the clowns would never admit it. It's much more fun for them to just slam everything to try and make them feel a bit better about their own pathetic lives.

This version of Something Funky would’ve been a great way to showcase the new band. It’s pure funk. The groove, the drums, Sonny’s bass solo, the chants. Like some 90’s James Brown. Shame Rosie didn’t record her bits though

Streetwalker is getting better with each listen.

For me this is as good and as important as the other deluxe sets.

Streetwalker has great energy.

It's like a mix between Trust /When The Dawn Of The Morning Comes / BigHouse

with the lyrics being a bit similar in theme to Yo Mister.
