the 'woodblock' percussion on the left ear channel on "gett off (damn near 10 minutes)"
is extremely distracting to me, to the point where it ruins the whole experience for me mad

"School Yard" sounds like a differet take than the boot I heard...and not just an extened ending....the main lead vocals sound different.

it is sweet. Makes me sad to think he was really lonely and wanted to be loved independently from his wealth and fame.

I might be in the minority, but I'm loving the vault tracks. Beneath the released D&P album, and it's 'Modern Sound' Prince was still recording more regular RnB songs. Tracks like Lariann and Schoolyard don't fit on D&P, but they are arguably better songs than Jughead, Push and Daddy Pop.

They would not have fitted on the album, and I get that. They remind me a little of how 'If It's Make You Happy' from the 1999 sessions, would have jarred on the 1999 album, was right to leave off, but not because of quality, just the project vibe. Great tracks get lost in the cracks of time, not because they were inferior, but simply because they never found a home.

In the case of Lariann, in another turn of the wind, it would have easily fitted on 3121 or Planet Earth.

Completely agree about the track fitting on Planet Earth. I'm really loving the vault trax also more than I thought I would. The overall sound is fantastic which obviously helps the enjoyment.

I'm listening on Spotify. It's 01:15 here in the UK. I tried to resist but have no willpower whatsoever. Going to be knocking on the door of HMV at 08:59 tho. 💜

Us Uk'ers ignore sleep for the funk! Yeah, Lariann has a very simmilar vibe in the chords of Fury, The 1 U wanna C and Resolution.

Anyone esle notice that at 7:45 of the Thunder Ballet, Prince references the Danny Elfman theme from Batman?

I've been super underwhelmed with most of the material released early, but the stuff we didn't already have is super strong IMO-- Trouble, Hey U, and I Pledge Allegiance to Your Love in particular are standouts to me.

A clean Thunder Ballet is very enjoyable.

I could imagine this being on an album that opens with Thunder Ballet and Ends with 3 Chains of Gold.

This outtakes are generally really underwhelming and terrible. At least we have d&p out the way i cant imagine any other SDE album from For you to The Gold Experience to be so bad and at least we have pr to look forward to

Vault disc 1

Schoolyard.

I've always liked this since i had the crappy sounding version on Uncut Diamonds. This sounds fuller than the leaked version on Beginnings and I really like the extra previously unheard part. Some nice little touches. I liked the deep brief Prince vocal.

My Tender Heart.

Such a great vocal. A much younger version of myself would have dismissed this as sappy. Excellent. I love it.

Pain.

Number23 nailed this with his review. I really like the trippy vibe. Another great collaboration with Roise.

Streetwalker.

This is great. I avoided the leak. I get a bit of 1981 vibe from it. I think it's the vocal, the decending piano part and little keyboard riff.

Lauriann.

Love it. Great drumming. Someone mentioned it would fit on Planet Earth, Totally agree. I could also hear it on Chaos and Disorder.

Darkside.

Knowing that it's just really an alternative version of Blood on The Sheets and has Prince's instructions all over it makes me think it should have maybe been left off if they had another completely unique track. However I still love it when it's playing. The guitar is fire, and Michael's drumming is powerful.

Insatiable early version.

Fantastic version. Known it for a longtime so it's not having the impact on me today it would have had. I remember beening blown away when I first heard it Beginnings. I'm glad they included it.

Glam Slam 91.

Never been a favourite of mine. I might prefer it more if Gett Off didn't exist. I like the horn riff. I just think the song has a bit of a novelty song feel about it. However having said that I welcome it's inclusion on this set.

Live 4 Live early version.

I like this as much as the album version, which is a whole lot. A really like what sounds like a concert crowd singing the title line and The Flow rap part.

Cream 2.

An enjoyable enough version, best part is the reprise section. That grooves hard.

Skip To My You My Darling

I liked the Jevetta version, this probably better, seemed to end too quickly.

Diamonds and Pearls long version

Great song, but this version doesn't offer enough of a difference to really warrant inclusion when we know other stuff was left off. I thought like many others it was going to include the guitar solo.

Overall some fantastic stuff on this disc. The best most interesting stuff is at the beginning.

Very pleased with Disc 1.

The quality is very uneven and there's a lot of mediocre/ uninspiring material, but there's some gems. Outside his '80s peak I would imagine that would be true of lots of future SDEs. Still better to have than not have, but there's better stuff for sure.

Correct. The more you listen the more you hear the similarities.
Crazy stuff.

perhaps the leak we had was in mono or something, or just bad quality?

i hear so much more going on in this song now.

the martika songs are great to have in this kind of quality, very chuffed with them cool

Just noticed he used a bit of Hey U in the Act I Everybody Get On Up/Get On Up. The 'let's make it mellow' break down. Love the little easter eggs like that he'd throw out.

.

And the same sample he used in Gangster Glam in Hey U

I Pledge Allegiance 2 Ur Love also has some melodic/phrasing similarities with his cover of

The "Let's make it mellow" breakdown is taken from the Archie Bell and the Drells song "Tighten Up" from the 60's although in this version Prince is just saying it himself. Janet Jackson used the actual sample on her 1997 track "Freezone".

Tip O' My Tongue's sax-loop sounds a lot like Dutch Sport TV-show tune from the early 90's (composed by Tonny Eyk).
