Daddy Pop. Why is this generally disliked?

Daddy Pop is often mentioned when people name songs they dislike or talk about their dislike for the classic, highly enjoyable album, Diamonds and Pearls.

I think it's great. I love the heavy bassline and organ. I really like the guitar tone. Roise's great vocals. It's like an early 90's version of Sly and The Family Stone. I also have no problem with Tony M.

So if you dislike it why?

I don't understand the hatred of Diamonds from some "fans". Daddy Pop, along with every song on there (including Jughead) are fantastic. LOVE DIAMOND AND PEARLS.

I believe it to be a slight dig at MJ (self-dubbed king of pop).

It's a decent song. I actually forgot what it sounded like so I had to go back to listen to it again. Which probably says it all really lol .

I really don't like the female vocalist he had during this era. I assume it's Rosie Gaines? But yeah, she has a very powerful voice, I'll give her that. But I could honestly do without her roaring all over the track.

Same can be said about most female vocalist he had over the years.
Shelby is the one I found most unnecessary. She has a good voice but she just kinda ruined some songs

My best guess as to why people don't like it is, it's kind of generic for a Prince pop tune. shrug It's OK, but nothing special. Also, the Tony M. rap is a bit shouty and off-putting, in my opinion.

I like Rosie Gaines, but I always really missed Boni Boyer after SOTT.

Everything on 'Diamonds & Pearls' is overly commercial and produced on the album, and sounds of the era, which isn't great in general. I love "Strollin'" live, and the album track is great too, "Willing and Able" live is fantastic, and gives me hope of an SDE during this era. "Jughead" and "Daddy Pop" are both fun and listenable, but outside of that I don't find myself listening to any of the tracks on that album regularly. Almost like a "Purple Rain" effect, the commericiality of the project makes it hit differently for us long term fans of the music (40 years).

I'm glad Prince didn't release it as a single cuz it's one of weaker songs on D&P and he probably knew it smile It's not a bad song but not that good either and I tend to skip this track.

Daddy Pop was one of the songs that made me a Prince fan. Not because it´s a great song IMO, but I had a cassette tape that a friend recorded for me of Diamonds and Pearls and I remember I hated it (I was a metal guy), but only liked ´Gett Off´.

.

I used to play the tape until it got to Gett Off, and I remembered I loved the musicianship on Daddy Pop, specially Michael B´s drumming in the end. Needless to say, the album grew on me, and I bought the Hits CD set, and....

It's pretty basic. It's also over-produced. It was the first song I edited Tony M. out of and it improved 100%. It's still just a 5 on my songometer for Prince music. But I don't feel the need to skip it. The end is better because it feels like a jam where a car finally takes off and just blazes down the highway. I wish the whole song had that feeling.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Simple: it's Prince being a braggart and attempting to be "hip" while lazily and ineffectively incorporating a genre he openly criticized in the past.

Funny enough I've been hooked on the song for the past week or so. I found an early demo that strips away a lot of the over production of the released version & no Tony M. It's actually made me appreciate both versions but the stripped down one is miles better and should've had minor tweaks and been put on the album. The beat and sample is damn good and I love that it's essentially a Rosie & Prince duet. Great song that I always felt quite indifferent about especially when I first got into D&P

I like it and thinks it's a good song on a great album.
Back when it was released there were people comlpaining about the Rock Steady smaple being used when it was already used to death and bcame stale at that time because of a lot of Hip Hop artists and mix tapes from the late 80s and early 90s that already used it in a much better way. But I still loved the song back then.

I listened to this album today by coincidence. Daddy pop and Jug head are just not very good songs. Daddy pop is the better of the two, but neither is a song I'll look to listen to from that album.

It wouldve been cool if Prince couldve somehow helped Sly Stone get cleaned up long enough to get him to feature on "Daddy Pop", and even had him in a video for the song...that wouldve been monumental...because it definitely sounds like a 90s Sly & The Family Stone joint...all its missing is the great Greg Errico on drums...no disrespect to the equally great Michael Bland...but Greg Errico is the funkiest white drummer of ALL time

I dig it. I love the whole D&P album. Even "Jughead". Granted that's my least favorite track. It was still peak time of my fanhood (1986 thru 1995) when I purchased it at 12am in West Hollywood. It was exciting.

Have you ever checked out

"My Tender Heart"?

I'm not a fan of her style but that song Prince wrote for her I feel vindicated the entire Rosie Gaines experience to me. That and Powerline.

There's a video for "My Tender Heart" out there, too. One of my all-time favorite Prince songs. I see no Prince vocal version coming up so it's likely slept-on by the famzz.

Daddy Pop sounds like most of the RnB / Hip Hop tracks of the era. I wouldn't say Prince dumbed down, but he put a sheen on his music. It did the trick. Diamonds and Pearls was succesful.

I dislike the album. Comparing D&P to Parade or SOTT from 4-5 years ago...Sounds like a different artist.
