I’m conflicted about the end of Daddy Pop.

On the one hand, I love the live band sound.

But on the other hand, it’s so different than the rest of the song. It sounds like what it is: a random piece of tacked on music with no relation to the rest of the song. It’s disjointed. And while there are some Tony rap’s I can tolerate (such as his Willing and Able rap), his Daddy Pop rap is awful.

Wow, didn't know that. I always thought that Powerline was based on Prince so it kinda makes sense. Tevin Campbell voiced Powerline too right? I know he was a singer in his own right but all I know of him is Powerline and Graffiti Bridge.

David Z. (producer at Paisley Park) wrote the Powerline stuff apparently, but I always hold out that one day it'll be revealed the man himself ghost wrote them. "I 2 I" has a similar keyboard setting to Prince's "Do Your Dance" for example.

Prolly not though they're kind of derivative and not "weird" enough. Top shelf Disney music though. There's some cool live performances Tevin did on YouTube.

"My Tender Heart" tho. Did you check it out? After looking up the lyrics during a heavy late night replay session I'm declaring this one of the best Prince songz evar. Sometimes I think he gave songs like these away because he was fine being somewhat vulnerable on record, but not quite this vulnerable. All the Rosie bombast in the Prince catalogue was 100% worth it for this singular moment of perfection.

At least it was to me.

I actually forgot to check it out when I got home from work but I just listened to it there. It's hard to judge a song from just one play but I don't think it's my kind of music to be honest. Or at least it didn't grab me. Maybe it's one of those that grows on you over time.

I wouldn't go to battle with anyone over the song. It's not a go to but it's tempo delivers enough momentum and energy that works when I'm in that mood so it gets in the circulation.

Shit, that’s a hell of a spot.
There’s a similarity even if it’s not intentionally based on it.
Wild Tonight is probably my favourite song on the album, never noticed it before.

Also, since we're harking back to old grooves, "As Trains Go By" is also based on a song from the 'Xpectation' album.

Can anyone catch it???

ha what? It's a Prince ballad. You've liked Prince ballads in the past... You act like I just sent you some sprechgesang, glitch, or darkwave. "I do not know how to interpret this unfamiliar style." If it sucks just say it sucks, don't condescend like it's some aloof esoteric foreign entity you've never came across before. It's not Marty McFly doing Van Halen riffs in 1955.

Thanks for checking it out anyway. It'll cross over here whenever a Prince vocal version leaks.

Hahaha. What can I say, it's just not my cup of tea. But maybe 50% of the music I like I didn't like on first listen so it could grow on me. Having said that, it doesn't sound like any Prince ballad I know and love. It reminded me more of Bette Middler or one of those. Or that song "Save The Best For Last". No idea who sings it or even if that's the name. It used to be on a coffee ad when I was a kid. But it reminded me of that song.

MsNia

This thread made me revisit Daddy Pop smile Thanks a lot!

I like it a lot more than, for example, Jughead, Push, or Walk Don't Walk. It's high energy, funky, a good showcase for the new band and every time I hear it I'm transported back to seeing it performed live on tour and on TV at the time, it was pretty awesome. Put some more guitar on there and I actually think it'd make a better album opener than Thunder.

However I find the lyrics pretty dumb. I personally never really enjoyed "boastful Prince" (see also - My Name Is Prince, Mister Goodnight). And despite being a bit of a Tony apologist (I mostly enjoyed his contributions to NPG in that era, he is talented but it was hard to rap at such high tempo) I think the rap doesn't really fit in Daddy Pop.

The song, while lifeless by his standards, does have one uplifting line: "Whenever you say that you can't, that's when you need to be trying. ".

Givin' up food for funk.

Susan Rogers used to talk about Prince writing 'bridge' songs (like Play in the Sunshine) between what he considered to be 'tentpole' songs on an album, and I feel like Daddy Pop is a classic example of that. Between the dramatic opulence of Thunder and the lovey-dovey Diamonds and Pearls, I think Daddy Pop is sort of meant to reassure the audience - "Still here, still a badass, still funky."

I remember liking it when it came out. But it hasn't aged well at all...just super cheesy. I generally skip it when I listen to the album now.

I still dig most of the album tho...I have said it before Willing and Able...esp that live version...is one of my absolute fave Prince songs from any era. Daddy Pop, Jughead, & Push have been omitted and replaced with Pink Cashmere & Nothing Compares 2 U w/Rosie on my D&P playlist.

I think it was the other way round
Daddy pop was track one but he thought the album needed a real opener so he then recorded thunder

Daddy Pop sounds like most of the RnB / Hip Hop tracks of the era. I wouldn't say Prince dumbed down, but he put a sheen on his music. It did the trick. Diamonds and Pearls was succesful.

I dislike the album. Comparing D&P to Parade or SOTT from 4-5 years ago...Sounds like a different artist.

It's called evolution. You always lose some people along the way. For many it happened in the 90's when he started incorporating hip-hop and live instrumentation. For others it came after Purple Rain.

It sounds like the over production is a problem with this one...has anyone heard the stripped down demo?

Also I just don't understand the Rosie hate around here. She had the most substantial vocal contribution to his music since Wendy & Lisa - I'm a Rosie stan. Her vocals on the C&D album elevate most of the songs she appears on

I agree some people left fandom because of Prince's incorporation of hip-hop, either because they didn't like the genre or because they thought Prince's attempt at it was weak. But I don't know anyone who left because of Prince's incorpration of live instrumentation. Most everyone, even the people who didn't like the hip-hop, was complementary of the live band sound.

There are people that loved that 80's programmed drum and keyboard sound and weren't feeling the change. That's just my observation. I suspect that it's not because people don't like live instruments but because people don't like change in general.

You're right that the hip-hop was more polarizing. I thought (and still think) his attempts to incorporate it were weak when he wasn't being playful with it. Playing it straight didn't work for him in my opinion.

Lot of things changed after 1990
Hip hop wasnt there in everything he did, even if it threw a new filter on what he was making
No hip hop in thunder, d+p, insatiable, strollin, morning papers, etc
But the sound changed
I guess it had to as it was a new decade with new trends, etc
He wanted/needed to score a hit
So had to rethink it
He couldnt use the same gear forever
But i think the aesthetic change was more important than it being a big band setup or not
I mean, prince was never gonna sound like an underground rock or rap production, he was always into brightness, cleanness, but the 90s stuff was much more typical sounding on the whole
