I was born in 1977 and started to be a mj and elvis fan during my teens. Elvis thanks to my father and mj because that guy was all over the place when I was in my teens. My brother was a prince fan during the sott period, but I was a bit too young to appreciate his music. It was only after my brother's death in 1995 that I rediscovered prince when going through my brother's 12" collection after some time has passed. As a memory to my brother I started to listen to the music he liked and which I vaguely remembered when he played those songs. I went to the library and rented some prince cd's to listen to before starting buying them and built up my own collection. My first real new album I bought myself when it first came out was new power soul and shortly after that crystal ball. And saw him for the first time in concert during the nps festival tour. And from then of I was hooked. So I kinda rediscovered 80's prince and discovered mid 90's prince at the same time. I don't have a favourite prince period. I can enjoy a funknroll as easy as lovesexy. It all sounds good to me. |

We will never know what is right. The poster has tried to tell people what life was like for adults before 1982.
Anyway. I don't belong to any group. I was a fan in Australia about as early as was possible - from back when the only way to hear Prince was on a radio station called 2JJ (now Triple J) - Worse than that, I lived outside of Sydney, so we only heard Double J late at night when the local ABC station closed for the night. You might also see pre-Controversy video clips on late night music video shows. You could get "Prince" and "Dirty Mind" not long after release but it took ages to get "For You" here. That is one end. I have been a constant fan through out all the twists and turns always excited by the next development. At the other end, I prefer HnR Phase 1 to HnR Phase 2.

I wonder if older people were rocking with Prince like that. I imagine the 30 or 40 somethings in the 80's like Tipper Gore ie being quite put off by his racy lyrics and not wanting his music around their kids. |

Two types? There are loads, the premise is nonsense.
I'm 53, discoverd him in '92 and now want all the vault stuff.
My friend, who introduced me to Prince, was madly into him in the early 80's, fell off the bandwagon in the 90's and doesn't give a shit about vault releases.
My wife who I met at a Prince concert, got into him about 93 and isn't too interested in his music now.
My son is 18, loves Prince music and started listening to him about 10 years ago. He's actually, been hearing Prince his whole life but started making his own play lists about that time.

"Molly" Meldrum was born in 1943 and was so into Prince he was a key reason that the Syracuse concert was broadcast nationally in Australia on ABC. Tipper Gore had no impact here.

I think what fandom boils down to is Prince's song reaching out and touching a person where their sentimentality lies, and that quality can largely evade any generational or other group categorization. It's a neato exercise to group fan traits, I guess, if U identify Uself strongly with Ur given generation or other categorization and wanna compare Ur interests against all others, lolz. |

Agreed. That sentimentality relies on there being an often ineffible and individual emotional connection being made at the right time and place that is sustained beyond this just being a hit song that month or year. Already this not because of your generation or other categorisation but because of you. All the other "you"s of your generation or category will have their own sentimentality - only some will correlate with yours but for their own reasons.
Outside of the indivdidual emotional/sentimentality connection, the fandom jumping on point is based on when you were exposed to an artist. Typically, but by no means exclusively, this will favour exposure to an artist when you are in your youth, especially teens and early adulthood. This is the only reason it looks like a generational issue. However, as shown above the connection may not be based on the correlation of the release date if the person is exposed to the artist by their parents, by a retrospective that is as result of a song or sound track being in a movie, TV show, death or Tik tok etc.
This last point is key today. With the breakdown of the power of the local top 40 radio station, MTV and alike and the rise of different user selected streaming and video services less under the control of the promoters and record companies, more new sentimentalities today are forming that are beyond the correlation of age/category and release date.

Great points expressed above, IanRG, and thanks for your elaboration. Fans can come to their fandom at any time of their life although youth days are great for forming strong impressions. The reasons to be drawn in by Prince are a multitude and I think too hard to generalize and you must ask an individual. Maybe you could pick out some trends and groupings that way, but I think it would be way more complex than 80s-style-loving people and 90s-onward-style loving people. There are a few sounds and subjects for people to choose from and one may enjoy several of them also for any number of different reasons, lol! True, also that the means of exposure to the artist has expanded over time to attract more admirers.

*Sigh* I wonder what Prince would have been singing about at age 64?

I am a Gen X'er. 52. I discovered Prince during the 1999 era. Album. Not the year. I feel like I belong to a small minority of lifelong fans because I rarely looked back and rarely, even now, do I listen to the early stuff. I grew along with Prince. I was always all in with everything he was doing while he was doing it. I believe he got better along the way. I was never pining away for the old days or wishing the Revolution would regroup. I loved most of his releases after PR. Yes, there were records I thought were off, but I was always able to focus on the few pieces of gold those records contained. I believe he really ramped it up at the end. His last 10 years are some of my most favorite. I loved Hit and Run 2 like I love SOTT. I listen to it a lot. I love the old stuff and somtimes, when I do go back, I think, 'Damn, that guy was fire.' But so was D&P and so was Gold and Lotus, and Artificial Age. He did a great job with his life and I feel very privilaged to have watched (and listened) to it all go down. |

I'm pretty content with the way he handled his career for sure, (not so much his personal life but that's his business). It would have been nice to see what he would have done musically as he got older. |

There two main types of Prince fans. The Purple People Seekers: Older fans. 45 years old +. Mainly GenX who discovered Prince in the 80s. Their favorite albums are the monster albums of the era, 1999, Purple Rain, etc. These fans blow their gaskets when something from the Vault sneaks out like the guitar amp demos of Sister. These fans idolize the ruffled shirts, teased long curly manes, and trench coats. The Symbol People Seekers. Younger fans. 35-45. Tail end of GenX and early Millennials. Discovered Prince in the 1991-1996 timeframe. Would gladly go underneath the cream to time travel back on time and see the NPG at Glam Slam Miami just one night. Like the earlier stuff but truly adore the power and playfulness and energy of the Endorphin Machine Era. I’m 49, discovered Prince in late 1982 watching MTV (with a babysitter!) and literally conceived a kid to Do Me, Baby. I’m A hopeless Purple People Seeker. How about the “Unicorn” Sub Fan Groups? Like those who became fans during the Rave Un2 Era or something??? [Edited 3/11/23 8:41am] [Edited 3/11/23 8:41am]
.
- I am 49, and I discovered Prince in 93. In the 80s, I was a hard rock/metal guy and didn´t care about him. But, yes, my fave era is 91-95 (Michael B, Sonny T, Barbarella, etc) |

This is why I prefer HnR Phase 1 to Phase 2. However, Phase 1 also makes me sad because it reminds me that this was as far it could go.
From before Controversy to HnR with nary a thought of jumping off, what a ride. Thank you Prince.

Are there? ... cool!
I'm in my 50's.
Got into Prince around Parade / SOTT.
I think everything up to and including Batman is as essential as tits.
I was into most things from the 90's at the time, but now find most of it a chore to listen to.
I think the majority of albums from the 2000's are unlistenable.
I'm replying because I'm drunk.

I'm 43 (my birthday was just a week ago). I got into Prince after hearing "Little Red Corvette" on the radio at three years old. When my sister got the Purple Rain LP the following year, I was hooked for life.
So, going by the OP's premise, I'm technically in the "Purple Symbol" age demographic, but in every other sense, I'm "Purple People." https://www.youtube.com/@PurpleKnightsPodcast |
