The two main types of Prince fans… The Purple People Seekers and the Symbol People Seekers…

There two main types of Prince fans.

The Purple People Seekers: Older fans. 45 years old +. Mainly GenX who discovered Prince in the 80s. Their favorite albums are the monster albums of the era, 1999, Purple Rain, etc. These fans blow their gaskets when something from the Vault sneaks out like the guitar amp demos of Sister. These fans idolize the ruffled shirts, teased long curly manes, and trench coats.

The Symbol People Seekers. Younger fans. 35-45. Tail end of GenX and early Millennials. Discovered Prince in the 1991-1996 timeframe. Would gladly go underneath the cream to time travel back on time and see the NPG at Glam Slam Miami just one night. Like the earlier stuff but truly adore the power and playfulness and energy of the Endorphin Machine Era.

I’m 49, discovered Prince in late 1982 watching MTV (with a babysitter!) and literally conceived a kid to Do Me, Baby. I’m
A hopeless Purple People Seeker.

How about the “Unicorn” Sub Fan Groups? Like those who became fans during the Rave Un2 Era or something???

How about the Gen Z fans who discovered him when he passed ? There's a lot of them flooding reddit.

Based on your definitions, I used to be a Purple People Seeker. But these days, my most-listened-to era is 2001-2016. Which I know makes me an odd ball. In most things in life, you can't really fit me into a bucket. I'm usually taking a third-perspective, be it politics or favorite Prince eras.

Not me. I'm 49, a Purple People Seeker.

Love the idea of younger fans discovering Prince.

Back in 2016 or 2017 I was talking with a young guy, 20s, at work. He made a little joke about Prince's death. Not very offensive, but I said, Please don't joke about that. He said if it wasn't for him dying he wouldn't have discovered his music.

Wouldn't it be "Purple People" and/or "Symbol People"?

What is a "seeker"? What are they seeking?

Yeah, I didn't get the "seeker" part of his terminology either.

Everything we can find from that era?

Me, for example, the Vault song Lets Rock, the early version of Let’s Work. I’d die to hear that.

The Symbol People Seekers would have a similar reaction if they discovered something like Hallucination Rain Take #3 (With Horns).

I guess I'm part of the unicorns group, 30 something who discovered him with Rave, didn't become a fan til much later though, but yes it's really cute to see younger fans in their teens and early 20's so excited about Prince and some of them are real young, like "here's my 9th grade Prince art project" young haha.

I'm really obsessed with the 85-87 era I think he was in rare form.

My high school senior class “Lip Dub” this year is to Let’s Go Crazy.

My daughter said it was a widely popular choice from the get go.

I guess I'm closer to this group. Although I think I'm a millennial rather than Gen Z. Having said that, I don't know how one dictates what imaginary group one belongs to.

Your age group does determine your first exposure to his music in general.

The key problems with this assumed split are:

1 It groups every album in the 1980 together when there is a marked difference between those who got in Prince before 1999/PR, during 1999/PR and after PR. The important start date is not a whole decade but an album or even a particular song. It is normally the song or album that was released at the time the person got into Prince. However, it can be an older song/album that a person was exposed to instead eg by a friend, at a concert, as a result of retrospective or on his death etc. Things like Guitar here, tik tok and songs used in movies or shows (eg Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill) regularly now break the connection to the original release date.

2 It misses the different jump off points and how they show the different types of fans. This is key to so, so, so many threads here over the years where the underlying theme is all the albums when I first got into Prince are the best and after X date or release, they are all crap to that person.

I'm 33.Discovered Prince through my father
The Batman album was the first time I ever heard prince music and I've been hooked since then
I love all of his music
Would gladly go back in time to see a purple rain tour show or a glam slam show

I discovered, well i knew singles as a kid in the 80s, but didn't really become a fan until 90/91. Batdance actually was the video that really made me think 'cool' lol. So maybe the batman album actually. But i do prefer 80s prince despite this. So i disprove your theory:P

Prince was around my house my entire life thanks to my older siblings. I was born in 1982 and my oldest sister had 1999 and exposed my brother who played that nonstop.

One of my earliest memories is my brother playing the scream from Thieves in his thunderbird loud as shit and scaring me. I think my first tape that I bought was Love Symbol and the first CD was the Parade longbox. I used to play SOTT ony tape deck on repeat while playing Mega Man 2 and 3, etc.

I can't think of a single era I don't like. I've always looked at prince's music as a journey that you dip in and out of at will. Some albums I don't care for in their entirety, but very few.

I suppose I'd say my favorite albums are Controversy, 1999, and SOTT. But I also have deep affinity for and memories of everything from Come to Rainbow Children. I can think of specific fond memories from every single album in that run. I remember walking across town to buy Emancipation. I listened to Rainbow Children in my dad's car and neither of us got it.

I think there are clear cohorts among Prince's fans but several more than 2. Besides, these two cohorts in particular sound exactly like they are - an oldster sending people to the kid's table.

Anyway, got into Prince in like 2003-2004ish, around like 13-15 age ish.

I generally don't really care for a lot of his 90s "Prince" or "Symbol" material. Like that Exodus/Gold Experience technicolor funk-rock style. Meh. Emancipation and Love Symbol were good, though. Come is great. The songs he "gave away" in the 90s were generally superior to his LP stuff, like your "Get Blue"s, Martika, Elisa Fiorella what have you. Those tracks I stan.

The 00s NPGMC era is my fav next to the 80s prime.
