I think it's awesome because now I can replace "When We're Dancing Close and Slow" with something better on my playlist(s).

Do Me, Baby is on of my favorite songs on Controversy so it's really nice to hear this demo. I actually prefer this version Welcome 2 The Dawn

I really like this demo… so interesting to hear how many elements he kept for the released version. If the estate chooses to release other one-off singles like this for the 40th anniversary of Controversy I would personally love to hear the following- Dear Uncle George (original version of Private Joy) Let’s Rock (original 1979 demo of Let’s Work)

"Do Me, Baby (Demo)" | Pre-order now in two limited edition physical formats exclusively from the Official Prince Store - https://store.prince.com/. Available as a special replica cassette single (limited to 1,981 units) and an etched 7” single pressed on purple vinyl. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Prince’s acclaimed Controversy album, originally released on October 14, 1981, The Prince Estate and Warner Records are pleased to present yet another hidden gem from Prince’s storied Paisley Park vault: the previously unheard 1979 solo demo-recording of his quintessential slow-jam “Do Me, Baby.” “Do Me, Baby” is best known as the centerpiece of 1981s Controversy, but Prince first recorded the song years earlier. A demo featuring Prince and his best friend and creative collaborator André Cymone was initially recorded in 1978. Then a year later, Prince fully reimagined the track as a solo recording during the April 1979 recording sessions for Prince at Alpha Studios in North Hollywood, CA, with overdubs added in the same period at Hollywood Sound Records in Hollywood, CA. From that 2" multitrack master tape, a cassette rough mix – recently discovered in Prince’s legendary vault and labeled in the artist’s own handwriting – was rendered but ultimately shelved. This special release of “Do Me, Baby (Demo)” has been newly mixed to match the original demo cassette specs by Prince’s GRAMMY-nominated engineer Chris James, and mastered by Prince’s longtime collaborator and multiple GRAMMY-winning engineer Bernie Grundman. As was typical with Prince, he revisited the song afresh more than two years later when he created an entirely new solo recording of “Do Me, Baby” at Sunset Sound in June 1981. That master recording was released on October 14, 1981, as the epic final song on Side A of Controversy.

I really only listen digitally now, but I guess the CD has died, because in many ways 'we' were only getting them for the pristine digital sound and the booklet/artwork - but now the digital sound is available via streaming or mp3 - so that only leaves the artwork - but that is really catered for by the vinyl now. So I can see why CD is slowly going the way of the dinosaur! (I still buy Prince albums on CD if avialable but no other artists!).

But I do love this release I like the idea of this release and being excited for the release, just put the tape and 7” in the cart on the Prince store. Entered all the details, then had second thoughts like yours too. Especially as I wouldn’t see it for about 4 months and it would’ve cost £45 (including shipping to UK) for one song! May be at that price, I’d buy it if it was the actual original tape. 99 pence from Apple it is then (I’ll put it on my Prince filled music player and back up to hard drive). The other 44 quid will go in my super deluxe fund. [Edited 10/14/21 13:30pm] There may or may not be something coming!

This is a really cool version. Has a really fun vibe. The drum track really works with the vocal style. It sounds so fresh, even though it's very old haha. I see why he made it more theatric later on, but I almost prefer a track like this.
