So, what's next? I've been out of the loop, have there been whispers of what the next release might be now that Welcome 2 America has come out?

Most whispers have been more or less meaningless with one exception: Hey. Hannigan.

Diamonds and Pearls has been rumoured forever it seems as this year's big box set. There's got to be an official announcement soon. [Edited 9/6/21 23:46pm]

I would think if there isn't an announcement within the next two weeks we won't get another release this year. 1999 Super Deluxe was announced early September for a November release so there is still hope.

Let's wait until the 1st of october but yeah, it's gonna be tight for a release this year.

It was 2 years ago. Originals was announced 3 months before its release, amd the SDE was even released 3 weeks after that! SOTT was released 3 months after official announcement. And W2A was officially announced 3 and 1/2 months before release. And that was just a 2 LP release, not as big as D&P would be.

The Rolling Stones announced the release of Tattoo You Deluxe in Late August for an October release. I think another release this year is unlikely but still a possibility.

The tattoo You SDE has just 1 LP of unreleased stuff. We know for D&P there would be six. So these two releases are not comparable. I also think Mick Jagger is working closely for this SDE, and they don't have many tapes to find and chose. Everything gets complicated when it's about Prince We know Michael Howe is finding new tapes everyday, so that made the plans for release changing a lot of times during the 3 last years.

. The latest Eye releases will be delivered sooner than the next Estate release. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Obviously if they go with D&P, it's because they have a lot of material to release.

Well, whatever is next has got to be better than W2A. There are clearly a number of reasons he didn't release it - not least of which is that it's awful. Literally the first Prince album I didn't buy. I'd be super into D&P. I recall at least one story (I think from a band member), about how raw and almost proggy it sounded until Prince started piling on the production. Perhaps we'll get some of the stuff that actually sounds like his best band playing. I have no beef with the original record, but I know there's a lot of stuff I'd like better that could be on this SDE (if it is D&P that is).

A feeling started to creep over me today that we're not getting a SDE this year. We'll defintely get some kind of release before the new year, it just won't be a SDE. If there is any major announcement coming, I have to think 10/1 is the deadline. Of course, that day is the 30th anniversary of the Diamonds & Pearls release...

- ...and The Rolling Stones have more power when it comes to push releases, compared to Prince (imho). - Concerning the ''Diamonds & Pearls'' album, to me, big parts of that album's sound, sounds pretty dated to be honest. But that aside. i'm not looking forward for this one if that's the choice. Hoping rather for a Parade super deluxe, or a Piano & Microphone show (package) release, cause this is closer to his W2A release... I mean, it would be a win/win, like the last thing he did, and sort of a hits package done by him all alone. Surely there is good footage of all his last performances (for Blu Ray stuff), and good soundboard recordings (for CD or Vinyl releases). I think Prince alone on the piano playing his back catalgue might gain some new and younger fans too. And like i always say, i mihgt be complete wrong here. -

The thing is, when you look at the first 5 weeks since its release, W2A is selling pretty well worldwide, especially in the US. Whereas the last Prince albums didn't last that long and that well. So I don't think Sony, the Estate, and wreckastores have an interest to release something else by December. Promoting a new release by October would be too confusing for the general audience. Because, for once, they just went to release an album that have rave reviews and selling well, especially for today's standards. I think Sony is pushing for big awards, and the album could have a second life if it got awards in a few months. To me, but I could be wrong, as long as it is still in the charts worldwide or in the the US, they won't be in a hurry to release anything, and that's understandable. I read here there will be a Target release for a PR remastered in November. Maybe THAT is the holiday release for this year, and that's all. But if they release nothing else by the end of the year they should at least promote W2A with something big ( a documentary, tv performances, a tour, a video, a new "single" Promoted on the radio, etc. ) . I wish there was more transparency in the release calendar.

- But is it me or did they stop promoting the W2A after it's release ? I'm not hearing all that much anymore... - And true, they might be pushing for some awards, but who else is in the race ? - And that's what've been saying for a while; there's no new single, no acompanying video's... They should do more imho, to lift this release even better, and that little while longer. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. All the marketing budget went to the 60 minutes advertising, the rave creviews in the media, and great exposure in stores, views bought on YT. All of that is not free. We can also add the German Rolling Stone operation. But if their marketing strategy is to to let go and just keep selling what's left in stores, until it naturally fades away in the charts, and doing nothing more until hypothetical awards, then they should as much release D&P by December. If they can, of course.

Maybe you are not familiar with that bootleg that´s an early configuration of D&P . I think it´s called Uncut Diamonds or Diamonds in the Raw or something like that. It contains most of the album´s songs in a more unpolished, rawer form and I quite like it. Personally, I even prefer the raw , earlier version of Live 4 Love over the released version on the album. I´m not that sure if there are really that many outtakes from that era that we haven´t heard before, so I´m not really getting my hopes high regarding an SDE of D&P. It´s a bit of an odd album in my opinion because the very early configurations with Glam Slam 91 or Horny Pony sounded so incomplete and weak, and then he added a lot of really strong songs to it, plus a lot of energy went into marketing and it became a bestselling album. . In hindsight, it is not really one of my favorite albums because of the relatively high number of songs I dislike (Jughead and Push, for example), but on the other hand it was a great era with lots of extra stuff such as homevideos, extra songs and remixes (Violet the Organ Grinder, Get Some Solo, Clockin tha Jizz and many more), and I liked the overall positive attitude and high energy of that era, the colors, the summer vibe and his new band. All that added to my fondness of that album and era even though there were many things about it that I initially disliked. Good times !
- What do you like about it? You seem to be a big fan of that album. Is there anything in particular that makes you say that you are super into Diamonds and Pearls? I'm with you there; whatever anyone thinks of the album that era was so much fun. It's dated now but D&P felt fresh for Prince in 1991 and he seemed reinvigorated. "Gett Off" was him updating his sound for a new decade and the visuals (videos, clothes, the hologram) were new and exciting. And the NPG felt like his first real band since the Revolution. That's not a knock on the SOTT/Lovesexy band, but Prince didn't push Miko or Boni as 'stars' the way he tried with Tommy Barbarella, Rosie, or Tony M.

Exactly! Glad you see it that way, too. I really liked the energy of that era.

- Yes, it 'seemed' reinvigorated. To me, that album came across as a final convulsion to get even bigger than he already was (/has been). Graffit Bridge, his previous attempt of reworked old vault tracks was also a serious commercial flop. That album (D&P) to me was a strange commercial attempt, a concession nearly, as if he wanted to belong to the sound of that moment. To me, it did not came off as fresh or innovative Prince. The only songs on that album that are acceptable (imho) are; 'Willing and Able', 'Gett Off', 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night', 'Insatiable'. Honestly, i barely ever listened to that album or the next one; ''''. All in my opinion of course. -

D&P is musically a masterpiece. Prince created a whole new sound, very eclectic and combining every genre. I can't understand the fans saying he followed trends with this album. That was the first time there was hip/hop rap with true instrumentals played by true musicians, not just a sample loop. Lyrically, it was also self-mocking, prefiguring Eminem. It seemed like, for the 1st time in his carreer, Prince was really having fun. Commercially, it wasn't that successful, considering the numbers of hits, music videos, promotion, tv performances, amd all the work put behind these choregraphoes and scenographies! I think the lack of US tour prevented it for selling more than 3 millions there.

wrong.
as early as 1979, the sugarhill gang were recording rappers delight (a global hit) with a live band in the studio.
this was the accepted norm for nearly all rap records of the time in fact.
D&P is a good album. it has sveral of the best prince songs of the 90s. cream, gett off, D&P, money dont matter, insatiable. these are all fabulous prince songs. as a whole the album isnt amazing, and is marred by the rapping, and some grandiosity (thunder) and some over production in general, but in general, it has many excellent, first rate songs. prince really made effort with this album. the symbol album by contrast was knocked out very quickly and while that is also really fun and enjoyable, it shows.
