in future I wish they would stick to a bit of a solid release schedule:

late march/early april: an unreleased album

on his birthday: an SDE.

in september: an unreleased album

in december: an SDE.

Oh that would be too perfect

And utilize Record Store Day or create there own (Wrecka Stow Day) for special releases (Camille, Dream Factory etc. Live releases)

Fuck RSD, paying 40 dollars for a limited vinyl, no thanks for me.
I would have rather buy the CD version at 10 bucks.
But yeah, I know, that wouldn't be the same profit for them...

It's your choice to buy something or not.
I don;t care if it's "expensive" if I want something I have a choice to buy it or not, a simple concept.

Isn't this the last year of WB being able to release a deluxe set under their label? If so, the Deluxe(D&P) is going to happen. And as some one mention about the 1999 deluxe time line. It still could happen. If we hear nothing by the end of September-most likely not? I still think it's going to happen, too much profit on these deluxe sets.

From what I understand, that deadline passed at the end of 2020.

I believe that - in the US - Warners now retains the rights to the soundtrack albums (Purple Rain, Graffiti Bridge, Parade, Batman) and Sony has rights to everything else in the catalogue... although I'm unclear on where that stands regarding vault material. Seems like Sony have rights to vault material, with the release of Welcome 2 America.

As for the rest of the world, I believe Warners retain the rights for all albums produced under their banner.... this is where it all gets confusing.

The true choice would be something widely available, not overtaxed because of shipping and scarcity, and also available on CD format, which is the original format, amd was NEVER thought/recorded for vinyl.

"Logically", if WB chosed to release D&P over Parade, is because they are not in a hurry to release their SDE for soundtracks albums.

Maybe there was a force majeure clause in the contract)( covid?) That allow them one more year to release whatever they want from their vault.

Or maybe they thought they could ( such as Universal a few years ago), but in fact they can't, and nothing will be released from WB this year cause they're stuck!!

As far as I know Prince was always more pro vinyl than CD, especially in his last years.
I would also rather see CD releases but, as in back the day, I love the blown up covers of vinyl more.
I understand the money thing for some people but to me that;s not a problem and because of that a (overpriced, maybe) RSD release should be a option.

Or they could do limited vinyl releases on RSD and 3 months later do a normal CD release of them. There's a lot of options that could satisfy everyone. RSD is a good promo tool they could use.

If we can have the choice, god bless RSD of course.
Now, if that's their only way of doing reedition, that's unfair.

I love vinyl, but for great albums, and that were originally thought in that format.
Turning the multiple CDs Emancipation or Crystal Ball in a 12 or 16 sides is completely useless to me.

Well not me. As I said the release was announced quite soon before it came out, 2-3 months.

We are still in mid August, not Septenber yet, so quite conceivable that it could be announced soon for a late November release as with 1999 deluxe.

[Edited 8/18/21 11:43am]

And scrapping what's left of the" promotion" of W2A? Fucking all the W2A left in stores ? Do they/we really want that? I never saw the wreckastores ordering so many Prince's album since a long time, even for Musicology there wasn't so many in stores the first week. So maybe it s reasonable to think the estate and the wreckastores would rather sell their loads of W2A before releasing anything else? I never saw so many good press reviews for a Prince studio album. Obviously, nothing will be announced until W2A leave the sales charts. For the moment, the 2nd week of sales looks like the 1st week of Originals and Piano and Mic. It still in the top ten in the US after all. Too soon to see if it has legs, but it seems it is. It s a commercial and critical success, maybe they think it can win awards or some shit like that. Abd are you aware about the German Rolling Stone Magazine with the Hot Summer single being available until late September, the box set being available in Japan only late August? [Edited 8/18/21 12:25pm]

It's mediocre and is dropping out of the charts very fast.

As I said before, W2A should not cannibalise D and P sales, those are safe whatever, it's such a classic. Also Sony and WB are competitors, they don't necessarily have to work together. What they may do is wait until October 1 (D and P release anniversary) to make the announcement so as not to ruin W2A sales but still could be released by the end of the year.

Back in 2019 a lot of people were saying the same in the late summer, oh 1999 can't be released this year but it was. Contrary to what some people are posting here, they don't wait til the announcement to make the vinyl and cds, they would have started production way in advance...

Again, about your last sentence : if it was the case, then why wait 3 months for SOTT? Amd pushing it back for a week.

Why wait 3 and a half months to release W2A? That was supposed to be out in June in their original plan.

It's obvious and a general case in the music market now that they need between 3 and 5 months between the announcement amd the release date, because of the increasing demand.

I agree though, that if by early September, nothing more is done for the "promotion" of W2A ( like a new "single, video, documentary, etc.) That will mean nothing "more" will be done about it.

If W2A is a flop, then 95% of the top is a flop too, because W2A is still selling better than most of the current releases.
3 weeks after its release, the regular edition is still #12 on Amazon.com.

And nobody knows in fact if its really WB that can release D&P worldwide.
If for distribution abroad they have to go with Sony, things could be really complicated.

Try it a couple of more times.
It isn't a problem. You just try to make it a problem. As far as I know the reissues were reissued alo on CD except for The Truth.

Like I said, I was talking about the Truth and the future reissue.
Since they stopped the CDs one year amd an half ago, and that The Truth was a success as a limited edition, they will go on like that for the future reissues.

Maybe with more pressings next time.

I m not the only not wanting to spent 40 euros on a sub-par album.

If the D&P box set (and Crystal Ball) will in deed happen, they won't be announced until way after they've gone into production.

These days, all of us in the industry tend to wait setting any release dates until we know when the vinyl versions will be delivered from the pressing plant.

Which is about 4-7 months at the moment, depending on which pressing plant is being used.

A D&P announcement soon is becoming more and more unlikely.
For unknown reasons, Sony/The estate are pushing very hard the track W2A on YouTube. Maybe on Spotify too?

They seem to want to reach a certain mark.
Very strange :

Yeah but (as mentioned elsewhere on Facebook) that was just from a tweet from @retromusicads

https://mobile.twitter.co...4578416643

So I wouldn’t hold your breath yet, based on that.

However, could anyone answer this: We sort of know that Sony hold the North American rights to non-soundtrack Prince albums but Warners do for the rest of the world and the soundtracks. Will it be Rhino records (owned by Warners) that’ll do the rest of the world distribution of D&P, if it is the next SDE?

I don't know but W2A is still selling remarkably well worldwide, as much as an album can do nowadays : still #12 in the USA in its 4th week, #33 in Japan for its 5th week...

But Sony is still doing nothing in term of promotion, besides buying views for on YT for W2A and Hot Summer.

As much as we would love another SDE it would be commercial suicide. I'de rather see lots more promotion of W2A & keep those sales ticking over & boost the wider catalogue sales through the xmas period. Seems far more sensible for the next SDE to be around March 2022 & dare I say it another SDE in Nov 22.

In the meantime I think we all hope that far more online content is released.

SOTT SDE was 13xvinyl, so if all B-sides/extended versions are included for D&P that’s an extra 1 or 2 LPs. Think about 2 or 3 for the remastered album, 3 or 4 for B sides etc, 6 hopefully for Vault stuff, 2-4 for a live concert. It soon adds up.

Unless they become wise and put the b-sides, remixes, lives etc. On CD in the LP boxset, yes it will be like 15 vinyls.
