Best selling albums in the US in 2021 so far, as of week 30 :

Rank Estimated 2021 Sales TITLE Artist Estimated Total Sales
1 397,000 EVERMORE Taylor Swift 679,000
22 107,000 PURPLE RAIN Prince & the Revolution 4,152,000
100 46,000 WHEN YOU SEE YOURSELF Kings Of Leon 46,000

Next week, with about 50.000 copies sold, W2A should enter easily in the top 100 best selling albums of the year!

Great results in the UK and Scotland. I suspect top 5 in America also. So surely world sales of 100,000 is a possibility in week 1 perhaps sliding into week 2. If you consider the purchase price of these physical sales being well above average the estate has done well

AOA had a worldwide opening of 108,000.
W2A is looking forward these numbers.
Very 2010's numbers!

Final numbers on Hits Daily Double place it at number 4 with just under 57,000 total units. It's fairly tight between Prince and Doja Cat so he might wind up number 5 on Billboard but top 5 is looking like a lock. These are solid sales numbers in 2021.

And Soundscan sales are usually higher than HDD's forecast.

Physical sales this year are 12% higher than last year.
And, again, considering the deluxe edition is very expensive and contains twice the album, these are out of this world numbers nowadays.

Indeed Prince usually did about 170.000 in his heydays, reaching with that number : #3 in 1991 with D&P, #3 with Musicology, #1 with 3121, and #2 with Lotus Flower/MPLS.
A #4 or #5th position is a little bit below that though, but would have been " Normal" Numbers for the summer holidays prior to 2010.

I’d like to think Prince would be delighted at such a success with the physical product and abject failure in the digital medium. It’s kind of the whole point of Rin Tin Tin, certainly. Do you pick up your own dog’s shit or get a drone to sniff it out and scoop it up?

A disappointing #26 position in Italy for W2A.
AOA was #9 and even Plectrum #21 there.

Also disappointing in New-Zealand, not appearing in the top 40.
AOA and Plectrum were respectively #17 and #31 there.

W2A enters at #2 in Swiss.
Best peak position since #Planet Earth which was #1.

In that country, Prince has 7 #1 albums, and now 4 albums at #2.

From the new Billboard (14/08/2021) :

Prince’s archival studio album Welcome 2 America debuts at No. 4, marking the 20th top 10 for the legend and his highest charting new release since 2009. (Prince died in 2016.) Recorded in 2010, but not released until July 30 of this year, Welcome starts with 55,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise just over 50,000 (bolstered by an array of available configurations), SEA units comprise 4,000 (equaling 5.9 million on-demand streams of the set’s 12 songs) and TEA units comprise less than 1,000.

Welcome 2 America is the late legend’s highest charting new album since 2009’s Lotus Flow3r/MPLSound/Elix3r (with Bria Valente) debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the April 18, 2009-dated chart. (Prince charted higher since then, but only with previously released titles following his death in 2016, including the No. 1 The Very Best of Prince.)

Some observations about the article :

In fact, AOA debuted with a little bit more sales, over 51.000. That was just a few weeks before the Billboard changed his rules and added streaming to calculate his charts.

For its 2nd week, AOA dropped at #22 with 15.000 sales. We ll see if W2A follows that pattern.

With 20 top ten albums, (21 if you count Lotus Flower and MPLS separately), Prince is good on the list, but far from the record.
The Rolling Stones have 37 top ten albums, Barbra Streisand 34, The Beatles and Sinatra both 32.

In fact Paul McCartney, as a musician, has 51 top ten albums !

All remarkable...but they are alive (except for Sinatra). I still havent heard of a comparable feat to W2A...a fully conceived proper Album (not compilation, greatest hits, frankensteined production) released after an artists death reaching Top 5. And on that list, is Prince the highest ranking Black artist? Just Curious.

Welcome 2 America, the eponym track is now losing its momentum on YouTube.
Just before the release of the album, the track on Vevo had 1600 views a day, then during almost a week had a 10.000 views/ a day run.
Now it s decreasing to 7500.

With 806,717 views, W2A ranks now at #60 on the all time list of Prince Vevo channel.

Not connsidered as "official videos" By Vevo, Born 2 Die amounts to 466,000 views, and Hot Summer 334,000 in " Only" Two weeks.

Next to that, is When She Comes with 94k views.
Maybe the next track for the estate to promote - or maybe they will jist sit on it.

In France, W2A did 4900 equivalent sales, including 4,600 pure sales.
Yes, it is #4 though.

That seems very weak, but I remember The Essential MJ, released late july of 2005, that opened at #2 with about 15,000 sales.

Sales are used to be weak during holiday s summer, and that was also the case even more than 15 years ago.
