Why do you think Prince has such a, um, weak stream?

I don't know.
Surely has to do with the fact Prince absent too long from the, streaming services.
Also, his videos need to be upgraded on YouTube, because the picture quality is really shitty and almost unwatchable.

No info yet on CD release, but i'm sure that will happen.

Although I'm no expert.

I let you imagine what these numbers would be if there was a Bohemian Rapsody movie for Prince, the release of the 1983 First avenue, or just a Netflix documentary series. Purple Rain would be in the top ten of the year for sure. Last year, at week 23 of 2020, Purple Rain sold "only" 37.000 copies, compared to the current 80.000 in 2021, more than doubling its sales. Since it sold 115k in 2020, it is currently going to sell 257k in 2021.

-

Thank you so much for all this uplifting info. smile

Really appreciate it!

-

No, please. No movie on Prince's life.

Certainly not a Bohemian Rapsody one.

A documentary could be interesting though.

Don't kill Prince's legacy with a copycat playing him in a highly possible rotten script.

It's impossible to poor his life and career in a 2 hour film.

RCS are mostly for Vinyl.
Vinyl sales are now surpassing CD sales. I highly doubt they can make an event of a CD of The Truth.
RCS are for vinyl and audio cassette, not CDs.
Sony gave up on all reissues they began to release from Musicology to ONA.
The best results they did were with Versace Experience, partly because of the the audio cassette re-release, limited at 5000.

Sony should have released first everything that wasn't released in stores : Chocolate Invasion, C-Note, Xpectation, etc
It would have worked better than Musicology, Emancipation, etc.

As shitty as the BR movie was, it made Queen turned from a bad catalog seller, as the best selling act in the world of the few last years.
It made unknown songs or former flops( Love of My Life, Don't Stop Me Now) turning into big hits in the charts, getting suddenly hundred of millions streaming.

So, as shitty as a Prince movie would be, I'm all for it because it would make Prince being hype and selling millions again. I m not bullshitting.

I know you're not bullshitting.

And there's no proof that it'll work.

True, it worked for Queen. But it will be a risk nevertheless.

I dare to say that Prince isn't as big as Queen or Elton John for that matter.

But if it ever should happen, it would be a blamage to his legacy imho.

So that estimated 4.1 million would be added to the 13 Million already certified for Purple Rain in 1996?

So if it was recertified by RIAA it would stand at over 17 million in the USA alone?

When PR was last recertified in 1996, Soundscan had 5 years of sales.
So you can estimate there were already 5/600.000 copies sold from the soundscan era.
So you can add to the 13 Millions, about 3.5/3.6 millions more.

Best selling albums in the US in 2021 so far, as of week 26

1 372,000 EVERMORE Taylor Swift 654,000
3 237,000 FEARLESS (TAYLOR'S VERSION) Taylor Swift 237,000

51 62,000 LOVER Taylor Swift 1,321,000
154 26,000 1989 Taylor Swift 6,276,000

Taylor Swift will end up selling at least 1.5 millions albums this year.
She sells her discs with a digital autograph or something like that to boost initial sales. Something Prince should have done as a marketing strategy.

Purple Rain is still likely to sell at least 200.000 that year.

2021’s Midyear Top 10 Selling Vinyl Albums

1. Taylor Swift, Evermore (143,000)
2. Harry Styles, Fine Line (125,000)
3. Kendrick Lamar, Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City (99,000)
4. Billie Eilish, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? (89,000)
5. Prince and the Revolution, Purple Rain (Soundtrack) (86,000)
6. Michael Jackson, Thriller (86,000)
7. Billie Eilish, Dont Smile at Me (83,000)
8. Taylor Swift, Folklore (82,000)
9. Queen, Greatest Hits (75,000)
10. Fleetwood Mac, Rumours (73,000)

That means that 93.47% of Purple Rain sales are from vinyl only!
That also means the ludicrous 6.43% sales left are from CDs, but also digital and audio cassette.
Clearly, nobody is buying PR deluxe anymore!

I thought the PR deluxe was sold out (for the most part) thus not available for the public in disc or vinyl form.

Discogs have a " Trending" list on their website which although is not numerical (on the app anyway), The Truth stayed at the top of the list for about 3 or 4 days. I guess that's a reflection of sales through the website. I think that's pretty good.

From what we saw on the charts and sales in the US, it surelyhappened as followed :

The only 13.000 copies the estate said they printed were all sold and accounted for the US ( it charted at #10 in album sales with exactly 13.000 copies).

A part of these sales were bought in preorders by wreckastores of abroad countries, and sold again to a non american audience.

In some countries, these import sales, were counted as true domestic sales, and they charted as such. Dedpute all the copies already charted in the US.
Or else it would have been charted in many other countries, such as Japan.

But all in all there were only 13.000 copies worldwide.

Let's get it right: a reflection of sales through the website. I don't expect Soundscan to include Discogs sales. I'm just saying that album had a good 3 or 4 days and still sits in the Top 15-ish.

How will W2A will affect PR sales the week of the release? Will it cannibalize it?
Will it make even more exposition in the charts, like these 2 albums in the top 20 sales at the same time?

We ll get the answer in two weeks !

I predict opening sales for W2A in the US in the range of 35/40k copies ( unless initial preorders were cancelled, with such a long delay!
Don't know the calendar release, but I predict a #1 in sales, but missing the official BB200 top 10.

The track W2A got a little boost on YouTube with the release of the album.
From an usual 1600 views a day, it got 5700 views on Friday, then 7593 Saturday!
For a total of 744k views on almost 4 months.
Where will it stop?

It didn't make a boost from the catalogue tracks though.

The video on YT with the best dynamic currently is the 1985 live from Purple Rain, with 50 k views a day. Released only 14 months ago, it got 18.5 millions views on YT.

For a reminder, the best Prince viewed tracks on YT doesn't belong to the Prince official Vevo Channel!
It s Purple Rain (221 M) and While My Guitar Gently Weeps 2004 performance (103 M)

The two versions of When Doves Cry, the #1 song from the Vevo Channel, have "only" A total of 83 M.
