Has anyone talked about how it's
Like 1999?

I mean, sure, he was doing those jams with fat synth hooks and catchy choruses at the time. But I don't really see the deep similarity to 1999.

I will say it's one of my top favs of the era and wish it was on the album.

Not exactly the same song. The choruses aren't even the same melody?

This was my thought. The melody for MM is straight from "1999."

Wait until the OP hears "Baby I'm A Star" and "America" back to back.

Or queues up "17 Days," "Toy Box," and "Blue Limosine." Head's gonna explode on that one.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

This out of a hat. I mean go listen to
The 1999 deluxe. It's the same
I didn't come to throw out weird claims and start debates
I think it's pretty clear to any musician what I'm saying

Very true I just truly believe he dropped

Historical point I am trying to make

No one needs to trust you on anything. We have ears. We've been listening as long as you, if not longer. You're in a minority here.

The melodies of "1999" and "Manic Monday" are what's a rip of each other.

Cue "The Ladder" and "Purple Rain"

Cue "America" and "Baby I'm A Star"

Cue a lot of things, but "Possessed" is a straight ode to James Brown. The chords are different, the hook is different, "1999" is slower. They are not even sisters or first cousins.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

That doesn't make it true. There is no historical point to make. "Possessed" is a great song, but it wouldn't hold up on 1999 as an album. It doesn't fit the album as a whole. Frankly, it sounds more like something The Time should've gotten a hold of and recorded, and put their flavor on it.

Trust me, I didn't just pull this out of a hat. The songs on 1999 are stronger than "Possessed," (either verison). Wait - you did know there are two versions of "Possessed," right?

Well you should have been clearer then! I buy this. We can't prove it, but it makes sense.

He didn't use Possessed because he already felt the vibe was conveyed strongly enough and diversely enough across songs like Delirious, Something in the Water, LPWM, and LCD. Those songs pretty much delve deeply into the "satanic lust" idea and they're more diverse songs than a fat synth banger like Possessed. Tho I personally love the song, even I think it would be hard to replace something else with it and still avoid monotony.
