Cue a lot of things, but "Possessed" is a straight ode to James Brown. The chords are different, the hook is different, "1999" is slower. They are not even sisters or first cousins.

That doesn't make it true. There is no historical point to make. "Possessed" is a great song, but it wouldn't hold up on 1999 as an album. It doesn't fit the album as a whole. Frankly, it sounds more like something The Time should've gotten a hold of and recorded, and put their flavor on it.

Those songs pretty much delve deeply into the "satanic lust" idea and they're more diverse songs than a fat synth banger like Possessed.
