Let's rate an albums tracklist: Diamonds and Pearls.

This is gonna be a toughie because this album is not one of his best. Go to it.

1. Money Don't Matter 2Night. Perfect pop with a message, muddled as his politics always were.

2. Diamonds. Perfect pop single. Love that ending. Maybe a bit too commercial.

3. Gett Off, funk on a stick. Great kinky lyrics. Silly video.

4. Strollin. Talk about underrated. This is the jam. Soft jazz confection. Summer spice.

5. Willing and Able. Soulful, live version better.

6. Cream. A bit overrated. Rips off Bang a Gong. Good tune.

7. Push. Funky--decent raps.

8. Live 4 Love. Decent rock./pop. No great tune.

9. Jughead. Fun tune.

10. Thunder. ok if slight.

11. Walk don't Walk. Cute, if slight.

12. Daddy shit, I mean pop. lol. Awful and cutesy.

13. Insatiable. His worst ballad. Rips off better ones. Video is indulgent dreck.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

You know when a song has "steady wishin'" in the lyrics, it's dated as fuck already. He uses "steady" about 10 times or so.

There are some great lines in it. "Deep purple concord jams" is slick. There are also lyrics about living in the present, etc. that resonate. But the song is overproduced, it's trying to hard, and Tony's rap is garbage (yes I edited that one out too and it's already better; of course you can't fall off the floor.).

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Willing and Able is by far the best song. It's gospel-like soul, it has a good melody, The Steeles are fantastic.
Walk Don't Walk has the same vibe.
Gett Off is a great funk jam, but it feels a bit out of place on this album.
The rest is just mediocre.
If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.

Yes, W&A has aged the best. Tony's rap actually fits seamlessly.

Agree on the other two as well.

I do like pop, so I don't have a problem with Cream or the title track or Daddy Pop, which is goofy but fun.

Surprised at the Insatiable hate. I think it's one of his best vocals. There's even a line that sounds like straight jazz singing to me. (I'm not a big jazz fan, but when Prince does it...)

The worst of it is Jughead and Money. I am baffled when people say they like that one. Puts me right to sleep.

Insatiable may have a good vocal, but after you've heard Adore and Scandalous, it's a bit unoriginal. Ever since then, all his slow jams were just more of the same. And I'm also not a big fan of Money don't matter tooooonight, it just sounds wrong singing it that way. The video was nice though. I read in Uptown magazine that Prince was undecided until the last minute if he wanted to release MDM2N or W&A as a single. Strangely enough, he released the first on single and played the latter on tour.

Other than Get Off, Insatiable ironically might be the only other track I like on the album lol. MDM2N and Cream are alright as well.

Gett Off - a timeless funk anthem.
Willing and able - smooth jazzy perfection.
Diamonds and pearls - among his best soulful ballads.
Insatiable - the same.
Money don’t matter tonight - understated and beautiful, makes me tearful.
Thunder - such a great mix of rocknroll and that funky beat, and the gospel.
Walk don’t walk - lightweight perhaps, but it swings.
Cream - relentless, cool and funny.
Push - great vocals, and a great beat
Daddy pop - decent danceable tune. That base.
Live for love - powerful but also a bit too detached.
Jughead - a bit silly perhaps.
Strollin - too sweet for my taste.

I love this album, it's the one that really got me back into Prince again. I love every track on it but especially the title song, Cream, Daddy Pop, and Money Don't Matter 2 Night, the b-side, Horny Pony is amazing too. I do not for the life of me, understand why people claim this "isn't his best album" or shit on the rap in it, please realize that it is a product of it's time. The videos were spectacular, the promotion/performances on Arsenio are some of Prince's finest. The artwork of the album and it's promotional materials and photography were also beautiful. Patti Labelle was the perfect co-host that night (can you tell that I love this era of Prince). And then came the Love Symbol album and that was just as good! I'm so incredibly excited about a D&P box, I really hope it comes true later this year!

I'll rank and rate them!

Cream: 9.8
Live 4 Love: 9.4
Thunder: 9.2
Willing and Able: 9.1
Gett Off: 8.9
Insatiable: 8.6
Strollin': 8.3
Walk Don't Walk: 7.8
Daddy Pop: 6.4
Diamonds and Pearls: 6.2
Jughead: 6
Money Don't Matter 2 Night: 5.6
Push: 3.6

I'm definitely higher on "Live 4 Love" than most, and lower on "Diamonds and Pearls" and "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" than most.

I don’t initially. I rate in increments of 0.5. Recently, I ranked every Prince song I knew well enough to have an informed opinion, and used a kernel smoother to produce these ratings. So “Cream” was initially a “10” but after ranking every Prince song and applying the smoother, it popped out as 9.8 (to 1 decimal place).

Well, Adore is sublime, but Scandalous, I don't know. It sounds too high to me. Like it's difficult even for the great falsetto.

Willing & Able (love the video, love that it sounds live, but his vocal doesn't look live)
Gett Off (all the different versions enhance this song)
Insatiable
Diamonds & Pearls
Walk Don't Walk
Cream
Daddy Pop
Push
Live 4 Love
Strollin'
Thunder
Money Don't Matter
Jughead

I remember one concert where Prince led the crowd in a Live 4 Love chant. It may have been the very end of the concert. It makes more sense for it to have been in 1993 (3/24/93, Radio City Music Hall), but I think it was actually 1997 in Jones Beach. I have the 93 on a VHS boot, so I should be sure, but... ugh. Brain no good.

Anyway, it was a simple but magical moment, like so many moments with Prince live.

This Senior year of college and many memories around this album.

Heard it at the WB Nashville Listening party and buying it later at Tower's Midnight sale.

Wife and I jammed off this for years.

On the D&P tour, Live 4 Love was played after Purple Rain. Next year in Den Bosch, at the end of Purple Rain, fans started singing Live 4 Love all by themselves.

ThePersian

1. Willing & Able (9/10)

2. Money Don't Matter 2Nite (7/10)

3. Strollin' (7/10)

4. Cream (7/10)

5. Thunder (6/10)

6. Insatiable (5/10)

7. Walk Don't Walk (5/10)

8. Daddy Pop (4/10)

9. Gett Off (3/10)

10. Diamonds & Pearls (3/10)

11. Push (2/10)

12. Live 4 Love (1/10)

13. Jughead (0/10)

Remixes worth mentioning:

1. Gett Off Thrust Mix (8/10)

2. Gett Off Urge Mix (8/10)

Poor album stuffed with Turkeys. Felt like a cynical attempt to sell records rather than make any artistic output. Jughead, Live 4 Love and Push are so cringeworthy I still struggle with the fact they are made by the same artist who did The Beautiful Ones, Crystal Ball, Anna Stesia and Joy In Repetition.

It wasn't just words. He imbued the phrase with real feeling and meaning. Like he wanted us to think about the words and take them to heart. It was a gentle kind of preaching from the right Reverend Prince.

Put down Scandalous again and get a bullet in your dome.

You know eye love u

Glad to see so many agree with me about Insatiable. Better to listen to a grand song like Extraordinary or da Baby Mama song.

Even the sweet Walk In Sand.

Money Don't Matter is perfect pop. Come on! I sense some rap haters.

Scandalous is perfectly fine. I just prefer the singing on Insatiable.

The stretch where he sings "There's no telling how far I'd go, cause when it comes to u I know, I'm insatiable and I just can't stop, Even if I wasn't thirsty I would drink every drop" - if you can't hear the beauty in that, there is something wrong with yo big ol' ears.

Plus the video for Insatiable destroys the cheap Scandalous.
