tomds said: The thing here is, I think, that people here judge songs based on their date of production/release. if it's written/recorded in 2000-2014 it must be less good then everything else he did in the eighties.
what if we never heard "everybody want what they don't got" and it suddenly appears on (let me say) 20ten or Welcome 2 America. would people still love the song ?
to me, that particular song is nothing groundbreaking and good to have as an outtake, but not killer material. but it's from the SOTT sessions, so hell this must be good.
see what I mean ?
Born 2 die to me has a nice ONA live jazzy feeling. I don't think anyone here dislikes that tour. it was one of his best in my humble opinion. so the sound and the vibe is good to me. only at the ending it goes down a bit, but overall a good tune. if he had played it live next to "other side of the pillow" or "extraordinary" people would love it to death.
for me, every decade has it's genious moments but also his lesser material. even from the eighties I don't like everything. but I still love Lotusflower and 3121 very much. I mean, people loved the retro songs on 20TEN. I THINK it's safe to say that different people like different things and that's okay and Prince won't lose any sleep over it.

For those that say the audio quality isn't good. I agree but maybe Prince made it sound that way on purpose? To fit the Curtis Mayfield 70's vibe. Just a thought I had

It sounds like the below. The 'Hell' line...Urgh i don't like such religious bigotry and judgementalism however the song is pretty nice musically, has a relaxing summer vibe. It sounds like whole album may be quite JW'y, with 'there's no arguing with the book' in W2A.
- Born 2 Die (3x) (+conversation) "Hey What happened ? Girl, She fell from the third story window. No! Yes You know, What? I think she`s gone, they are putting her on the gurney right now. Oh no!I hope sh`s alright! Does anybody know what happened? Girl! She fell! Going/Church (?) to Hell

[Edited 6/7/21 1:21am] [Edited 6/7/21 1:23am] JWs don't believe in the existence of Hell, so if the word is used, it wouldn't be in the context of punishment.

Yes but he's used the word 'Hell' a lot before in his songs and you don't have to believe it to use the word. if you listen carefully she definitely seems to say that. It's just not so clear if she sings 'going' or 'church' or something else before that, but the word Hell sounds clear to me. The fact he doesn't sing it himself may imply he doesn't agree with it but then again he wrote the song and 'Hell' rhymes conveniently with 'fell'.
Anyone else also notice a slight parallel from 'So High' by Wendy and Lisa, the unreleased song they worked on with Trevor Horn, often referred to as the Friendly Fire sessions.
I also can't help thinking this song can be read as being a parallel to Prince's last days, it was rumoured he had also 'left the church', although I personally don't buy that he was a deliberate junkie but was probably just hooked on pain relief, those drugs are incredibly addictive and even if he wanted to get off he probably couldn't. It's not the same as taking drugs recreationally or for hedonistic reasons, as he is implying the girl in the song is doing.

When you were a Prince fan from the 80s, not only does the music from back then sound more to your general taste but it also links to a moment in time where you were most likely an adolescent discovering this musician that made fantastic music and pushed quite some bounderies in pop music.
Decades later, that man has changed, his music has changed but also you as a listenir have changed. My musical palette has expanded quite a bit compared to my teen years and there is a lot of fantastic music out there beyond the purple music that I tap into.

Think you're being very generous to the community here. In the real world the love from fans & equally the love & respect from people in every aspect of music from all age groups is insane. On here...there's a sense of entitlement & pure arrogance from people who expect a SOTT quality release with everything.

It is too bad (so sad) that the admiration and whatnots that "the outside world" has seems to not translate to them actually buying his records. Fascinating.

I totally agree with your reasoning, but then again, one can't expect people to understand their own mental processes, because doing so requires so much effort and is usually deemed useless by society (when not entirely disapproved of - I mean, I'm sorry but how come kids finish high school without a single course in psychology? Because society deems the subject useless. Sports and biology are school subjects, but not psychology? Is not psychology a part of our brain's biology? Wow!). . I've been listening to more and more other music over the years. I'm fine with P's music being what it is at any given time, regardless how much I enjoy it or not. No sense of entitlement: neither P not any other artist (or person, for that matter) wasn't ever supposed to make ME of all people happy, or suffer my wrath if they don't. . But to be fair to others, I've been suffering from mental disease ever since I was a kid (child abuse leading to heavy depression, addiction and all the desillusioned and potentially dangerous shit that goes with it), so in order to function normally and not become a psychopath, I've had to spend a lifetime keeping myself in check, monitoring my thoughts all day long and trying to figure out the difference between what's real and what's in my head, what's a reasonable expectation and what's an unreasonable one. . In a way, it's a blessing, because it made me extremely capable of understanding myself, realizing whether I was being sane or losing it at any given time, which most people don't have to because they can "easily" function normally. On the other hand, it's a curse because sometimes I wish I wouldn't have to do this and I could just go blindly with whatever goes on in my mind, like my cats do, without having to ask myself at every step whether I was going to hurt myself or someone else, whether I was being insane or rational, yet still be 100% socially functional. . So yeah. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Curtis Mayfield? Sounds like a Prince so me. Very good tune actually. Some of u are very very jaded. Reminds me of the Gold Exp tracks.

seriously ..THAT'S your counter? I am talking about people across the music world - record sales mean shit these days...you know what streaming is right?
That man was & is loved & respected on every level possible - no disrespect but I'd rather listen to music legends & frankly anyone in the industry speak about him that the likes of you. They KNOW what it takes to sustain any sort of a career for that length. His place as an absolute icon is cemented in history.

Someone said this already but I believe a lot of you are stuck in the 80's and want every new unearthed song to sound like a SOTT outtake Born 2 die is a great tune and easily beats anything on 20ten.

Not perse, but a lot of the stuff from the 80s was not only very good, it was also very different from what was already around, it stood out from the rest. The stuff that is being released now isn't necessarilly bad but it's just less extrodinary. For me personally, I get it. Artists don't stay cutting edge forever.
So, yes, there is also interesting music beyond the 80s but both statements; "only the 80s matter" as "his new music is equally interesting" are not really correct. The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

If this is prince trying to show he can do curtis Mayfield it's clear Hendrix did curtis better just to make one artist.
But ultimately it shows prince trying to do curtis = bad curtis + bad prince [Edited 6/29/21 8:26am]

Whatever. You can keep all the negative shit in a basket over there.
Meanwhile, what's up with the prince.org post over on Facebook, with a picture of the W2A album cover and just the word 'October'. Did the album release get pushed back/delayed?
Anyone? | |

[Edited 6/7/21 8:40am] [Edited 6/7/21 8:42am] I agree This song was written in 2010. Didn't Prince had a overdose in that year as well? I heard they had to pump his stomach and it led to his fallout with Sheila e. Maybe this song was too personal for Prince to release himself [Edited 6/30/21 15:49pm]
