I love all versions I've heard but the 4 minute instrumental with Eric Leeds is very great.

I love the album version and did so from the first time hearing it. The edit always makes me wanting that guitar solo. The video needed a better concept but it's still a great song. I have the 12 inch single but never really liked the other versions on there. I should probably sell it. [Edited 6/15/21 14:54pm]

one of the rare instances (the only instance?) in which the "extended version" completely ruins the song. the courtoom scene in the album version is perfect but the longer one takes it way too far and it totally kills it.

Here to say this. I fucking can't take that extended version. Completely robs the song of any power.

It’s been rumored that this song is about Carmen Elektra.Supposedly she cheated on him and it inspired him to write this song.

I have strong memories of hearing I Hate U for the first time on the radio when I was a teenager. I don't know why, but it sounded to me somehow like a throwback to the For You era, which I found very exciting. There's something very old-school Prince about it. On closer listen, I really like the song but the production with the huge drums and shiny digital synths is a big turnoff for me, your honour. Still, a worthy song in the Prince canon! PIPS! Eurgh...

Carmen confirmed he played the song for her after he heard she went on a date with someone else. She didn't say who with. The Tony rumour has been around for years but I don't know how true it is or the source of it. . It would be in my top 5 P tracks. It was apt for me at the time in 95 being on and off with a girlfriend. I listened to the maxi single A LOT. . I like the extended remix it's got some great lines, like 'Guinness couldn't count the scenes of sex and violence in it,' but it lacks the musical force of the album version. . I love everything about the album version. The drums and synths, the courtroom scene and that short guitar solo just screams of raw passion [Edited 6/16/21 3:44am]

All versions are great cause it's a great Prince song - but I must admit the Extended Remix is what I listen to most - it's incredible, amazing singing from Prince. [Edited 6/16/21 3:34am]

I remember in late ‘94 (or early 95),when we were all beginning to think that TGE would never be released,a fan/friend made me a cassette containing most of the tracks that would be on the album. It contained a partial version of “I Hate U”…apparently it was recorded at one of Prince’s concerts….played on the speakers before(?) his show began? It was poor quality but a male fan can be heard saying “this sounds like “Joy In Repetition”,right?” anyway….who remembers that crazy period when the album’s release was uncertain? Prince released a flyer which indicated that the release date is “NEVER”.Those days were fun but frustrating at the same time.

It was such a back-and-forth time. I remember the David Letterman performance and how cringe worthy actually David was reacting to the symbol. I think he even broke the symbol on the stage intentionally or am I wrong? But what I do remember well is getting a lot of the cd bootlegs of that were coming out before the album was released. Funny you should mention For You - there is a little fill/stab thing in the song Baby 1:13 ("we'll grow stronger every day"...), that Prince re-uses in Eye Hate U!
PS Ricky Peterson added all the glitter and shine - the early versions were more stripped down. Hopefully if they ever do a SDE they will include some of the bare mixes. [Edited 6/17/21 6:05am]

Among my favourite Prince songs. In my estimation, it's a complete classic and uniquely Prince - simultaneously cocky and vulnerable, erotic and rejected. I favour the full-length version. It showcases the full, often contradictory, storm of emotions, which I find quite relatable.

I always thought it funny that such a spiteful song has a "Quiet Night" smooth jazz mix. .
Also, one of my favorite guitar solos of all time; the beginning of the solo sounds so pissed off!

I liked it when it came out, but it wasn't one of my favorites from TGE. I did grow to love it though in the years after it came out.

yeah,that guitar solo is powerful!

I only read about that For You part on here in the last couple of years; great spot. . I'd love to hear the early sparser and longer version PVault mentions
