When She Comes 10/10? So it's as good as All My Dreams or Purple Rain or SOTT or Anna Stesia? For real??

Leaving aside the fact that I don't like All My Dreams and Anna Stesia, that is a very simplistic way of looking at things. Me giving When She Comes a 10 and also giving Purple Rain a 10 does not mean that I think they're on the same level. For one, I don't believe anyone can rate songs out of 10 in a serious situation. My own reviews in this thread are more for fun than anything approaching a serious critique. The 10 I give to When She Comes is purely to signify how much I like that song. Is it as good as Purple Rain? Not in my opinion, no. But I like it more than any song I'd give a 9.

Simply "OK" but "OK" is all expected from his later stuff so I'm not surprised. I'll save my money for another project. Next....

it almost sounds like a scratch lead vocal take really, i mean it's good, but something feels off in a way i haven't heard on any other material of this era. very thin sounding in a way that doesn't serve the song, in my opinion.

it makes me wonder how close this really was to being released. one's left to assume there were probably a few things he would've gone back and changed if he really released it in 2011. i just want to know what i'm listening to really, cause a lot of these sound like 90 percent of the way there to "finished studio track" but there are little things here and there that catch my attention and make me think about it. i of course didn't have these thoughts regarding the SDE's cause those were just outtake discs, but the context of this being an album makes me think about it more.

Interesting, as I've also began to be nagged by the idea this is unfinished. What particularly bothers me is the manner in which the song just ambles to an end and the relative absence of Prince's input the last few minutes. It feels as though the finale of the song needs some soaring falsetto or a guitar solo or even an explosion of horns. Instead, there's just an empty space where something should have been. It feels as if Prince left the song after three minutes and simply never returned. A shame as this is almost there... * [Edited 6/4/21 4:54am]

I don't know. Go back and listen to "Same Page, Different Book" which was released when Prince was still alive, on the 3rd Eye Girl youtube channel and it has the same production and also rambles on in
the end. noticably so. I think it's just the vibe the album will have perhaps? since SPDB is so much in
line with W2A and B2D.

This place is just crazy. So called prince fans ! I really like both songs because it’s prince singling and playing on them. So to me they are enjoyable to listen too , because I like prince. A bit like a member of your own family! To me, people moaning about the content are not real fans of prince.

I don't like "Jesus songs". I find all the "God is Love, Love is God" stuff to be cringey as fuck. If I wanted to hear that nonsense, I'd go to church. I can appreciate the song for its musical merits but the lyrics put me off.

Oh wow!
That's what most of Prince's music is about though.God and sex
He may not always say the name God or Jesus but it's there.
"Let's go crazy" is a good example

Come to think of it,I was listening to "Still would stand all time" earlier and towards the end when Prince is shouting I thought to myself that he would've make a GREAT preacher.

I don't mind so much if the religious stuff is kept to a minimum. Let's Go Crazy is alright because it's not too over the top. But Controversy, for example, is too much. I love the song but I've edited out the prayer.

Spotify just auto-played Curtis Mayfield's 'Move On Up' after Born2Die. Actually made me laugh out loud, it's a trillion times better than this bland Prince track.

Yes it will be a great idea to compare possibly Curtis mayfields best song to it. Some people on here are like I said, just looking for any excuse to troll.

Sure, that's why I joined the Org 14 years ago - to troll. This is just a bad Prince song. That's not trolling, that's an opinion expressed on a forum where we, erm, express our opinions on all things Prince.

Some songs are good some not as good , of course it’s just a matter of opinion. To call it a bad song is unfair in my opinion. I like it. And I have been listening to Prince a long time. I like the Style of this song and Welcome to America. To me everything we get from now on is a bonus. I just try to enjoy any new releases.

Why is it that if someone disagrees or has a negative opinion of something you like then they are a troll. This sort of behaviour is killing free speech.

Anyway back to the song, it is ok, nothing exciting, i have listened to it three times and hasn't really drawn me back in. I doubt i will end listening to it much but of course i will listen to the album as whole.. I like the first 90 seconds lets say and then it becomes a bit dull.

My opinion, guess i am a troll.

I was excited for this based on the 60 Minutes snippet, but it’s not that great, IMO. Still a step up from “Welcome 2 America”, but I fear the album is going to be among my least favorites based on what I’ve heard. Oh well, still happy that the Estate is considering stand-alone lost album releases like this, even if this one ends up not being to my liking.

I argee,

When I first read the above post suggesting people who dislike this song must not be real Prince fans I was tempted to respond and say how idioit that sentiment is. Being a fan doesn't meant that you have unconditionally love every single thing Prince does.

However, there is a contingent of Prince fans (including some of my close friends) who reflexively dislike another outside of the '80s. I think that's very closed minded.

I kept telling them this: Yes, his '80s output was genuis and the best. But that doesn't mean there's nothing worhwhile in his later out. Just because something he released in 2010 isn't as amazing as anything he released in 1986, that doesn't mean it's not worth listening to.

For me personally, I listen to his 2000-2016 music alomst exclusively. That's not because I think it's the best. The '80s stuff is clearly the best. But I'm sick of his '80s stuff. I've listened to in repeatedly for nearly 40 years. I want to hear something different. And while is 2000+ stuff clearly isn't anywhere near as good, it's still good. I'm not embarassed by it (like I am about some of his '90s output).

Yes that's what I mean , you have explained it much better than me! I can enjoy pretty much any Prince song because I like the variety of his music. So I can appreciate it. Especially after his death. There's nothing so far that has been released since his passing that I haven't enjoyed, I must be too easily pleased I guess. I don't get the blanket dismissal of saying that something is just shit.

The thing here is, I think, that people here judge songs based on their date of production/release. if it's written/recorded in 2000-2014 it must be less good then everything else he did in the eighties.

what if we never heard "everybody want what they don't got" and it suddenly appears on (let me say) 20ten or Welcome 2 America. would people still love the song ?

to me, that particular song is nothing groundbreaking and good to have as an outtake, but not killer material. but it's from the SOTT sessions, so hell this must be good.

see what I mean ?

Born 2 die to me has a nice ONA live jazzy feeling. I don't think anyone here dislikes that tour. it was one of his best in my humble opinion. so the sound and the vibe is good to me. only at the ending it goes down a bit, but overall a good tune. if he had played it live next to "other side of the pillow" or "extraordinary" people would love it to death.

for me, every decade has it's genious moments but also his lesser material. even from the eighties I don't like everything. but I still love Lotusflower and 3121 very much.
