This is the best I can come up with
Born 2 Die (2x) Oooh Born 2 Die (2x) - She Sells every thing A to Z Anything just 2 keep her free, from the, from the hustle of the streets Ooh Oh! She left the church a long time ago said they couldn't teach what they did not know (Love Me) That's when she lost her, virginity - Now She's pimpin' every ... (pato?)(bottle?) from New York to LA Ask her why she do that thing She said it's always been that way
Jump back Jack U (or) you might be next If try to cut mamma`s cake (for the deal daddy) Ask her what her deal is then This is what she say - Born 2 Die (2x) If U ain't livin' right, U know 2 Born 2 Die Better watch out, she get- she getcha So High So High, You know everybody's gettin' So Hiiiiiigh, (I gotta get my hustle on) - 2 run 6 streets in Oakland then down into Frisco bay As far as she`s concerned crime does pay Ak her when, she`ll say "from the 1st day" What she really needs is to get Back 2 the truth before we go astray Ask her what the deal is (what's the deal daddy) This is what she'll say - Born 2 Die (2x) If u ain't livin'right, you sure 2 Born 2 Die (She getcha), Look out, Getcha getcha, Getcha getcha (She getcha) So High, So High I said nothing good happens after midnight Getcha getcha, So high bye bye - Yeah. Oooooh .......... Getcha getcha, Ooooh So, Soooo high (So high) So, Soooo high (So) So, Soooo high (owowow) Hiiiiiiiigh ! Getcha getcha, So High so High Getcha getcha, so high, Getcha getcha, so high so high, - (break) - Born 2 Die (3x) (+conversation) "Hey What happened ? Girl, She fell from the third story window. No! Yes You know, What? I think she`s gone, they are putting her on the gurney right now. Oh no!I hope sh`s alright! Does anybody know what happened? Girl! She fell! She's Ill.
Kind of an interesting blend of genres here; Curtis Mayfield song about a ghetto dealer (as narrated by a Jehova`s witness!) Which ends up as a kind of cautionary murder ballad. Interesting that there seems to be a kind of grudging admiration from the narrator to the subject , even though it still comes off preachy.
Only P could sing something like this, Sort of the same kid of subject as in the song "Shy" from TGE only a lot more morally confused [Edited 6/3/21 4:24am] [Edited 6/3/21 4:24am] [Edited 6/3/21 4:27am]

On what would have been Curtis Mayfield's 80th birthday, the estate releases Prince's most overt homage to the late soul musician's aesthetic. I like Prince's shout out to Oakland and "Frisco Bay"-land of the pimpin' hustle. This is Prince's version of a tunes by Curtis like "Kung Fu" and "Billy Jack". Although Prince talking about street life on this song is generic, the groove and singing is unmistakable. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

I'm enjoying hearing Prince's voice singing something new-ish. It's not new lyrical subject matter but I'll take it. I've actually been listening to those early 70s Curtis Mayfield albums and they are great too. [Edited 6/3/21 6:27am]

I agree that Prince wasn't no Curtis Mayfield, although taken as a slight by Prince, is true. Curtis Mayfield was a pioneer of writing inspirational songs that spoke to the working class and lower class rungs of the Black community like "People Get Ready", "Choice Of Colors", "This Is My Country", "Keep On Pushin", especially during the Civil Rights era and segregation. Prince excels at his forte. After hearing "Born 2 Die" it only made me want to pull out the "Superfly", "Sweet Exorcist" and "Curtis Live" albums. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Its cool enough. Sounds like P was re-writing " Brown Sugar" a litlle bit, though. This is what you want...This is what you get.

It's bottle.
Cool song. | |

Listened to it a couple of times, really like it. Certainly different sounding album so far to the likes of 20ten . I think this album will be a nice addition in between the gap in music around this time period

Meh. I'm pretty sure Prince knew this wasn't going to shake the foundations of anything and that's why it went unreleased. But I like consuming new Prince content so cool.

The lyrics are above average, but the song doesn't go anywhere. It's a Jazz-lite snoozefest. Givin' up food for funk.

idk what you all were expecting. this kicks total ass. sure it's been done before, but it's a really solid song and a nice groove, certainly better than pretty much all of the shit he was releasing in 2010, come on now.

Much better than W2A but doesn't do a lot for me I'm sorry to say.

I would say it has more than hints of Tevin Campbell's version of Shhh.

Yeah, exactly. This song is FUN in a word.

Curtis Mayfield for sure. Didn't Shelby or Morris say something about how someone they knew said Prince was great and all but no Curtis Mayfield? One of them (Morris H, I think), said Prince took it as a challenge. Makes sense.

I like it. But I'm not going to listen to anymore single(s) releases until the album comes out. I don't want to ruin the excitement of 'new' music as there aren't many songs on this one.

Sincerity would be a good start, but probably too much to ask for Prince of that era.

"wahhhh this song he didn't release 10 years ago and is now being presented as an archival work by the estate isn't up to par with that stuff he did released 40 years ago. where's my masterpiece wahhhh"

going off what we've heard so far W2A, B2D, SPDB, HS and parts of BM and WSC, this album seems to just ebb and flow on the same vibe with production flourishes and the female backing and talking

Let people live, ffs. | |

Is this album just a big pastiche?
This is like curtis Mayfield via 90s acid jazz and neo soul Really not impressive. Nice musicianship but I mean, it's wasted as its such a pastiche. And again, these lyrics are not good. [Edited 6/3/21 9:14am]

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

True but the vocals are cringeily derivative too. A good curtis tribute is something like hendrixs have u ever been to electric ladyland. This is just derivative. An attempt at emulating but not too great.

I like this alot. Sticks in my head and I keep wanting to go back and listen some more. Trying not as I want to keep the songs as fresh as possible for when the album is released. I think W2A could be a step up from 20ten, and I like 20ten.

- I personally like the song. Indeed Curtis Mayfield-ish, and I also hear some Marvin in there too. - The song starts well. Surprisingly relaxed, then meanders a bit after the second refrain, right when the uninspiring breaks start towards the end, too much 'Getcha-Getcha, So high-So high' frazes continuing with no direction. It owuld've been better if Prince did the harmonies too. And then that short conversation at the end. The conversation should've been more clear throughout the breaks. I miss a souly guitar solo in the breaks too. Or some horns. It kinda walks nowhere towards the end. Then the story... (as in the title 'Mistra know it all') so it is told by Prince, hm. OK, she went wrong in her life (who might this be ? between NY and LA?) then killed herself... And the jehova drama-tourists at the scene blame her even. Dear Prince, i think this is why you did not release the song. Judgementalism got ya (hopefully). Religion doesn't keep you from drugs. It just replaces it. -

I understand what you mean, but I'm still curious, so I gave it a listen and I like it. But not too often, because you still want the album to sound new. It's just like in the old days when a single became a hit and I bought the album and the hit single was the song that made me think, yeah yeah, I know this. Next! [Edited 6/3/21 9:56am] If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.
