Lovesexy the song (not the album)

There've been lots of threads and commentary on the Lovesexy album as a whole and the era in general, but I've not seen much discussion here on the Org about the title track itself. What do people think of it?

I aboslutely love it -- it's got so much energy and personality -- but I've always assumed I'd be in the minority. I figured most people would consisder it cheesy. So I was surprised when I was listening to the Peach & Black Podcast review of the album and heard all four of them rave about what an amazing song it is.

In fact, @Toejam (who's opinion I value) went so far as to say Lovesexy might be his absolute favorite Prince song of all time. (If I recall correctly, he said he came down to Lovesexy, Strange But True, and maybe one other song.) That's pretty high praise.

It's an incredible song, simply complex. And the spoken section is delicious.

Kinda surprising the song didn't have much legs beyond the era itself. It's a total jam and I think was the most effective use of his chaotic production style of the time. Also, is there any other word more Princey than "Lovesexy"? lol.

One of the most underrated title tracks of all.

The absolute most joyous climax of that album and one of his most incredible songs compositionally and as a production. Lovesexy is the one! Hundalasiliah!

First heard this as an impressionable, and already very atheist, 15 year old. I remember listening late at night on headphones as I fell asleep and thinking “ahh... THIS must be what religious faith feels like!” Just incredibly moving and rapturous, but in a fun way!

It never felt rapturous or energetic to me, and when I first heard it I thought it was stealing from 1999 but slowed down.

I like "Eye No", or the unreleased "The Line" much much more.

“tonight,we make love with only words”

Only Prince could do a song like this.

"swiddle" in yo' love seat

from the Urban Dictionary:

Swiddle
The act of urinating into the rectum during anal intercourse.
I was having a nice butt f**** with my wife and I thought I was almost there and I wound up swiddleing all inside her anus

It's always been one of the best fleshed out and strongest songs on Lovesexy. While Lovesexy's meters were beyond 10 on the dials, it still has a sparseness to it, much like Parade or Around The World In A Day. It was just louder.

I love the bass line of the song, and the strength of the horn section. The melody is a bit weird, but it's typical Prince, really. I always find myself disappointed when the song ends and swooshes into "When 2 R In Love." But the segue does seem to work, one to the other.

I believe it would've, and should've, been a better opening track than "eye No." I can hear him shouting "Welcome 2 the new power generation!" at the beginning, rather than the "rain is wet..." stuff on "eye No," which should've been an opener for side 2.

But yes, the song is probably the best track on the album. "Glam Slam" and "Anna Stasia" runs 2nd and 3rd.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I looooove the transition to W2RIL. The kisses, swooshing, and "sweet dreams"... Wow. Brilliant segue honestly.

The title track....then “When 2 R In Love”....followed by “I Wish U Heaven”....that 3-song sequence is the best moment on the album,imo.

I heard that this song was originally planned as the album’s second single and an extended remix was completed.Prince abruptly changed his mind and chose “Glam Slam” to be the second single mad

Let me clarify: I don't hate the segue. It's that "Lovesexy" is such a bop that I don't want it to end.

I love that little “detour” section in the second verse....where he says...

“all in life becomes easier
No question is unresolved
and I’m not afraid...no”

then,he sings “come on and touch it,I know U will love it...with it,I know heaven’s a butterfly kiss away”,plays some mean guitar then gets back to the regular chorus.

That part is brilliant! One of those genius moments in a Prince song.

Well, it remains my favorite Prince album. Period.

-

And the title song is so unbelievably fucking great, with all the layers... unearthly unique!

-

I wonder if there is an extended version in the vault?!

To me this song screams for a three times longer version.

With all these layers and melodies on top of each other... it is worth a (re)MIX at least.

Love to have all these seperate tracks, please release them. wink

I can dream on, right ?
