Has Sony given up on physical re-releases? Strange that Sony didn't re-release CB98 this year. Especially for Christmas, since it would have been an expensive 6 or 7 Vinyl boxset ( depending on if Kamasutra is included). . Sony released only one thing this year, the ONA box-set. I know things were hampered down by Covid, but I can't see how they opted not to benefit from Christmas sales. I think WB would have rather release SOTT deluxe in November to benefit from Christmas sales, so clearly there was an open corridor given to Sony they chose not to take. They must be very late on their planning of re-releases, that should have ended next year. . CB98 would have been a complementary release to SOTT SDE, and make one benefits from the other. . Still no words on it, so it won't be out until at least February now. An at least 10 months pause maybe means they reconsidered the physical re-releases. . I think the good money would have been on a " The Hits 3", before re-releasing anything. But with the TMBGITW interminable lawsuit, they maybe had enough invading stores with obscure vinyl re-releases that doesn't sell that much. .

With a $300+ box set plus a limited edition set of singles, and other stuff, they were smart to not release anything lest it be largely ignored. In 2020, SOTT SDE was quite enough to worry about paying for, much less a bunch of redundant gimmicky already-got-it releases. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I m sorry but many orgers are complaining about the missing tracks from CB in the SOTT deluxe. So since there will be a Parade SDE next year, you presume Sony won't release anything because WB releases a 300$ box-set? That doesn't make sense at all. . And then, if WB is releasing a 300$ box-set of Graffiti Bridge in 2022, Batman in 2023, and Purple Rain again in 2024, do you think Sony will gently wait until 2025 to re release anything? . Moreover, Sony has to release many albums that were never in stores in the first place : C-Note, Xpectation, Chocolate Invation, Slaughter House, Kamasutra?

Doesn't a Hits release need to hits on it? This has 3, not enough for an EP. Musicology TMBGITW Call my name

who would buy a re release of CB anyway? it was a botched release with awful artwork, no sense of a plan to its tracklisting, no care, and annoyinglhy overloud mastering. who needs to buy it again?

Me, since I didn't buy it in the first place. . And if there is Kamasutra and the War in it, it could be more interesting. . And many NPGMC albums were never released in stores, so there is a lot to release. Why didn't they released that in the first place, instead of Emancipation, etc. They were too confident IMO. the estate taking over is a chance to do it again, and better. shame they didnt include some of the 86 era tracks on the SOTT SDE but hoping if and when they get around to the mid 90s, they include these songs there, so people dont have to buy CB again.

There are more hits in there. Gold went Top 10 in the UK, The Holy River and Betcha were Top 20, plus Letitgo also was.

They are prolly timing the release after SOTT...but I NEED a new Crystal Ball set. So many underrated GEMS in this set.

"I got too many hits" Prince once boasted in concert - alas, not on this compilation idea [Edited 11/23/20 8:01am]

There was alot on the PRINCE releases this year, just the SOTT box, but also lets not forget that a few weeks later a limited vinyl on RSD, not too mention the ONA box, the vinyl issues and cd one the dvd etc... Emancipation Planet Earth Musicology etc....not sure if this year was not actually overloaded with Prince stuff to be honest. At this point i would love to see something rare and not a reissue from SONY also I would like to see these proteges get issued again, even if there are no bonuses, i think it is time to get Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, The Time stuff out there, The Family Jill Jones this needs to be looked more into. There are a few labels that have been doing reissues and securing rights to artists alot from the 80's one label is called Rock Candy another is Golden Legion Music and another is Rubellan Remasters, they have done everyone from Rock bands like Night Ranger and Rick Springfield to Laura Branigan and Berlin and Sheena Easton, they get the masters often add a few mixes or bsides and even get much more in depth books, so far they are strictly CD issuing but at this point Id take a remasterd Jill Jones or The family with artwork and new intereviews and maybe a 12" mix or two on there. It's not far fetched to assume it has to do with COVID-19. It's likely a certain number of these rerelease's purchases were impulse purchases in wrecka stores, particularly when it comes to vinyls. I certainly saw these albums being very much present in every record store I visited here in Berlin as well as in France last year, suggesting the stores market is still very much alive for this type of products. My guess is they probably assume it's wise to wait until people go back to shopping normally before they release any more. I like these songs - however, to call them "hits" would probably be far-fetched from my point of view - at least if you compare them with the previous hits. Only exception really is TMBGITW - yes that was a hit.
But hey, I am not saying these are bad songs, only the word "hit" is probably used differently by the general public.

But hey, I am not saying these are bad songs, only the word "hit" is probably used differently by the general public. A song is a hit when it reach the top40. Many songs on the Hits 1 and 2 were far from achieving the same success than, let's say, Gold or Holy River.

I wish they'd release it only to get a non-brick walled version. The audio on CB98 sucks anus. I'd like Movie Star without Jam O' The Year quietly sucking in the background of the intro, but that's not going to happen.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I've heard Sony releases have addressed the brick walling. Planet Earth, for example, supposedly sounds much better, though that might only be the vinyl. I personally have no use for vinyl. If the album (Planet Earth), didn't suck so back I might grab one to check.

I have a feeling the CB issue on cd or vinyl or both might have an issue with rights since WB might own rights to some of that earlier work that Prince submitted "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

It is, in fact, a carefully, wonderfully sequenced record that flows remarkably well. I'm quite surprised that, after 22 years, some people still haven't made it past the "he mixed tracks from different eras" first impression. It took me about one week to figure that out at the time. No, or that would be true with Rave as well, and Sony rereleased it. If WB had had to claim that material, they'd have had to do it back then. It's too late now, it belongs to the Estate. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
