Thanks for the underrated 7. : )

Don't think Mad Sex, It's About That Walk, or The War were referenced yet.

Love listening to Mad Sex, and for some reason, it's always struck me as a guilty pleasure. I don't know why. Does it need to be guilty? lol

P's vocals, some of those lyrics, and the way the song makes you want to move...so fun!

Yesssss. But why guilty?

Its a perfect song...the funky horn chart, heavy keyboard chords and the little New Orleans piano sprinkles. Not to mention the dirty mind winking lyrics...brilliant.

I see both sides of this. 99% of the time my playlist is based on released date, not recorded date. I think to keep things simple and consistent. However...

There are some songs I struggle with, particularly those on the released 1998 Crystal Ball set. How can I put Dream Factory and Sexual Suicide on a 1990s playlist? It just doesn't seem right. So I stick them on the '80s. Same with Black Album tracks.

In fact, if you're going to be dogmatic and inflexible about using the release date, then all of the bonus tracks from Purple Rain Super Deluxe, 1999 Super Deluxe and Sign 'O the Times Super Deluxe would be on your 2010s playlist. You'd end up with June followed by Rebirth of the Flesh.

But the 80s songs on the CB set were obviously not to he taken as 90s songs

It was an archive set

Not the same as a new album that happens to include older songs

And anyway, graffiti bridge songs from 86 were in fact re recorded for 1990

True, and that's how I rationalize in my head breaking my rule about sticking to release dates with Crystal Ball and the Super Deluxe Editions. The Black Album is a slightly different situation, but one I can rationalize as well.

What about Chocolate Invastion and Slaughter House? How would you treat them?

Glad no one has replied with pussy control on their lists! I have never understood why people like that song so much.

Me neither, it's awful.

People hate it because of the title. It's a brilliant track.

Do you mean the surgery part? I guess I don't take the surgery line literally, but I'll admit that most surgery tends bloody.

Also, there's a lot of song versions I've never heard, so maybe I just missed a Love U in Me version with blood.

[Edited 11/13/20 18:33pm]

Surgery and blood go hand in hand

Also could mean her lovemaking is healing like surgery

FWIW, I hear "it's like surgery" as expressing how incredibly great/skilled/splendid/ravishing/etc. her lovemaking is. Like he's saying,

"That right there. That's some precision loving she's got going on." lol

But I really appreciate your take, and most folks might think mine is off the deep end.

This word has come up in all discussions of this song that I've heard, so maybe it's just too distracting. neutral

I'm going to check the thread about songs with a particular element that spoils a song for some. Maybe someone mentioned Love U in Me over there. For me, I really like this song.

Never thought of that healing, sewing up wounds, etc. idea. So cool all the possibilities readings of lyrics bring.

On a slightly different subject, I was listening to Andy Allo's cover of the song over the weekend. For anyone who is interested, here's what she does with it on a Music Monday occasion. Starts at 13:30. https://www.facebook.com/...1362330197

I LOVE the opening to both of these songs. For me, both continue on in a great musical way. Love Endorphinmachine lyrics and concept, but like funk, I cringe at some of the P control lyrics.

I know a couple of hard core fans who love P Control. One of them says it's her pro-girl/woman anthem. For me, I can imagine how it might come off that way if a person hears it in the background, only catching lyrics here and there. But for some of the lyrics, I don't see it at all.

IMO the P Control lyrics also have an odd mix of logic/implications about levels of financial income. Having a hard time explaining without going into detail.

For SOME P Control lyrics, I don't see the "anthem" reaction of my friends. Don't see how it's particularly pro-girl/woman or pro-boy/man.

This, for example:

"Pussy got bank n her pockets b4 she got dick n her drawers
If brotha didn't have good and plenty of his own
N love Pussy never did fall"

Could say lots, but will leave it with, if this is the point of view, where's the lyric that says this:

"Dude got bank n his pockets b4 he got pussy n his pants"

?

lol

P control is like prince, snoop,John waters and rupaul came together with an idea of what a pro women anthem should sound like Was it ever meant to be in show girls? That seems like the right place for it. Or the carmen electra album. Call me boring but I'm just embarrassed as a prince fan by that one. [Edited 11/13/20 9:09am]

nod I haven't heard it in a while but it is one of the most cringeworthy songs I can think of. The lyrics read like they were written by a teenage girl and the song is corny.

I dont remember the truth super well so not sure what I thought of comeback.... I'm just counting songs officially released in the 90s. Not counting power fantastic just as that was released as an archive track, whereas RUTJF and pink cashmere were older, but were released as if they were new.... What would you add from exodus? The only contender I thought was cherry cherry. [Edited 11/12/20 6:54am] I should say my criteria was basically to choose the most novel or interesting songs so while I like sleep around a lot for instance it not that novel in a wider context. I also left out songs that are a lot of fun like interactive or endorphin machine just because I'm not sure how well written they are compared to princes other rock songs. But I know ppl will disagree with some of my choices lol [Edited 11/12/20 7:02am]

Rave was definitely promoted as something taken out of the vault in 1999. I remember Prince talking about it in an interview as needs time mature or ferment or something.

Pretty much all the tracks on those were released in 2001. The albums were released in 2004. You'd have to be splitting eras pretty finely to have an issue.
