I find it hard to pick from the symbol album actually.
I like most of the album really, the max is tons of fun, sweet baby is lovely, but a true standout, a really great SONG?
Idk.
I always found 7 kinda leaden tbh. Meloddically I find it a bit lifeless. And I never understood the lyrics.
Love all the ballads but there something a bit dashed off about them.and the album overall
Like he did it really quickly.
At least with d and p, the best songs were just undeniable.

I think it's probably the first album that had several songs where it's like, but why is this even here? The Flow, Arrogance, My Name Is Prince, all the segues, just unnecessary stuff distracting from the best parts of the album.

Love 2 the 9s and 3 Chains and Continental are total classic but modern Prince.

YES! to including the Continental, and all those germs.

Damn U and 7 among my top favorite Prince songs.

Talking vocals for a minute...

The Damn U vocals are way, way out of this world.

Thinking about 7, may I ask if you like any of the P songs where you'd say layered vocals (with multiple of P's voice) are big?

Also, do you have favorite P songs that have version with lots of acoustic guitar?

IMO, the Max and a couple others from this album would be cool on the showcase.

I LOVE the opening to both of these songs. For me, both continue on in a great musical way. Love Endorphinmachine lyrics and concept, but like funk, I cringe at some of the P control lyrics.

I know a couple of hard core fans who love P Control. One of them says it's her pro-girl/woman anthem. For me, I can imagine how it might come off that way if a person hears it in the background, only catching lyrics here and there. But for some of the lyrics, I don't see it at all.

IMO the P Control lyrics also have an odd mix of logic/implications about levels of financial income. Having a hard time explaining without going into detail.

For SOME P Control lyrics, I don't see the "anthem" reaction of my friends. Don't see how it's particularly pro-girl/woman or pro-boy/man.

This, for example:

"Pussy got bank n her pockets b4 she got dick n her drawers
If brotha didn't have good and plenty of his own
N love Pussy never did fall"

Could say lots, but will leave it with, if this is the point of view, where's the lyric that says this:

"Dude got bank n his pockets b4 he got pussy n his pants"

?

lol

P control is like prince, snoop,John waters and rupaul came together with an idea of what a pro women anthem should sound like Was it ever meant to be in show girls? That seems like the right place for it. Or the carmen electra album. Call me boring but I'm just embarrassed as a prince fan by that one. [Edited 11/13/20 9:09am]

lol

Lived most of my life by Baltimore, so thanks for the John Waters shout out! What delightful stuff could we get mixing thoughts of those two? Like, When Flamingos Cry.

Just realized, if it's even possible to make more sense of my silliness, that I should change last line to

"Dude got bank n his pockets b4 he got pussies in his pants"

...as the point wasn't about getting with the hero of the song, and pussy can be confused with Pussy. Yes, silly stuff.

Line also could be...

"Dude got bank n his pockets b4 he got box in his briefs" : )

i like the version i heard of the max on the last tour, just him and the piano. sounded great. he took it into a basic, but better, stomping piano kind of thing.

i like damn u, makes me think of marvin gayes distant lover, but the lyrics are just a bit superficial to me for some reason? not sure why. its beautiful but the song doesnt add up to much cos hes not singing about very much of note. maybe i need to relisten to it.

i actually cant think of any prince songs on acoustic guitar except for live versions/medleys or those on the truth album. i liked dionne, man in unform, dont play me, the truth, etc.

7, vocally, makes me think of slave from 1996. same sort of 'flat' melodic structure, i.e it doesnt have much range (im no musicologist, this is just my impression of how to describe it), and stays at one level more or less. i love an honest man, if you want layered vocals though, and that is better than 7 or slave to me.

john waters and prince both had little richard style moustaches smile

pussy control is such a silly song, i actually hate when it comes into my brain, as its still catchy.

im now envisioning an animated video where its actually about a pussycat. biggrin

Glad no one has replied with pussy control on their lists! I have never understood why people like that song so much.

Me neither, it's awful.

if there is a "Prince's worst song ever" thread, its #1 on my list...undisputed and inarguably his worst song ever...he must've been high when he shot that one out.

There's also Scarlette Pussy.

I think Pussy Control is pretty catchy, but I'm embarassed by the lyrics and would never play it for anyone. That's a song I only listen to on headphones only. A lot of people are offering as a suggestion in the thread I started about songs you would love, except one element ruins it for you.

Do you mean the surgery part? I guess I don't take the surgery line literally, but I'll admit that most surgery tends bloody.

Also, there's a lot of song versions I've never heard, so maybe I just missed a Love U in Me version with blood.

FWIW, I hear "it's like surgery" as expressing how incredibly great/skilled/splendid/ravishing/etc. her lovemaking is. Like he's saying,

"That right there. That's some precision loving she's got going on." lol

But I really appreciate your take, and most folks might think mine is off the deep end.

This word has come up in all discussions of this song that I've heard, so maybe it's just too distracting. neutral

I'm going to check the thread about songs with a particular element that spoils a song for some. Maybe someone mentioned Love U in Me over there. For me, I really like this song.

Trust me, it's a lot better than the tracklist would have you believe. It has been made to flow together perfectly, often using bits and pieces from different versions of the songs. I wasn't really a fan of the era until I listened to that release.

I was going to post the same thing. You can't look at The Dawn tracklist and assume you already know what it sounds like before actually hearing it.
