Shockadelica

This has to be the best, or at least one of the best of Prince's b-sides. How it didn't make it onto SOTT is a mystery to me.

I can see why Erotic City didn't fit Purple Rain, but Shockadelica could of easily found a home on SOTT.

So glad to have the 12" version as part of the deluxe.

Because Camille should have happened

.

Where would you have placed it on SOTT?

I would love to hear alternate mixes of that one. I even like the take he did of it on the Purple Medley B-Sides mix. Did he ever play it live? I wonder why not, or so little if he did.

Prince being fully Prince. I LOVE Prince being indulgent and Shockadelica is very that.

I can see why it didn't make an album - I think it's not necessarily fitting in the grand vision of what SOTT really was. He covers the same ground in other songs. But it's definitely got it's own vision and I love that he went balls to the walls with it. You can tell he was inspired.

Definitely one of my favorite b-side tracks. But I can see why it wasn't on SOTT. It's a really strong song, but it's a bit like trying to find a spot for "Interactive" with "Endorphinmachine" taking up so much aural space. I mean, what would be sacrificed to put it on there? "It?" "Slow Love?"

Oddly on Camille and Crystal Ball, "Good Love" followed "Shockadelica," yet both were removed when it was paired down. Maybe Prince felt they worked well back to back and didn't wanna break them up. Of course, he may have also had other ideas (obviously) like a B-side or giving it to another project (ie: Bright Lights, Big City).

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

Shockadelica is one of my favorite B-sides as well. I wish it was included in more live setlists...The '87 rehearsal version of the track is excellent though.

Only in sampler sets.
There's a great rehearsal version on Purple Underground volume 8. He's having a lot of fun with Cat and the band

Yes those 2010’s sampler sets.
.
Purple Underground 8 is well worth seeking out for the rehearsals of Shockadelica and Superfunkycalifragisexy

There's a mix which runs for about 6:30.

From about 4:41 the adlibs differ and then there's a 20 second extended instrumental portion from 4:53. I'm sure it'll leak one day.

It should have made it into the album, it's a great song, just after IIWYG

You know you're a fanatic when you discover you already have something and didn't know it or even unzip it from a while back, because you had already moved on to downloading more and more.

U all need a second opinion.
It would have fitted better on TBA instead of when 2 R in love.
When 2 r in love...Why is this song is on 3 albums/EP ( including Scandalous Sex Suite) will always be a mistery.
This song must be a witch.

You stole my thought! mad

biggrin

That is, unlike others, I don't mind When 2 R in Love on The Black Album. I find a fun contrast that sets off and enhances the differences in tone. So guess some might say I like When 2 R in Love on there because it doesn't fit. : )

But on that TBA thread, there was the idea of what might go there in When 2's place. Enter Shockadelica!

I've wondered about W2RIL on TBA too. Retrospectively, it seems awkward because we know it as a Lovesexy track, i.e. in a very different context that gave the song a very different color than on TBA, but I think it wasn't out of place at all on TBA because:

.

1/ TBA was meant to be a black music record, making a point of the fact that P was still primarily an R&B artist. Ballads, and sensual ballads even more, are a traditional staple of R&B records, so it made sense to include at least one to be in tune with the overall statement.

.

2/The lyrics are rather suggestive and certainly among P's most explicit material. The track was definitely of a nature to infuriate Tipper Gore, and as such remains in tune with the overall subversive/provocative tone of the album.

.

However, I agree that Sockadelica would have belonged on TBA way more than on SOTT. Feel U Up could also have been a rather decent candidate for TBA.

Played a little game in my head about what might have gone on TBA in that When 2 slot. IMO, Feel U Up also feels right.

Always believed Shockadelica would have fit nicely after Starfish & Coffee in place of Slow Love. (However, the new remaster has done its work on Slow Love! I have a new found appreciation of it.)

It should have been placed right after IIWYG in this order:

Strange Relationship

If I Was Your Girlfriend

Shockadelica

Good Love

Cosmic Day
