I like Roadhouse Garden well enough, but that fingernails on the chalkboard intro to it alwasy gives me second thoughts on listening to it.

.

I like Wendy and Lisa, but some of the music they helped with is hit and miss for me. Some of it is just fingernails on the chalkboard for me. Their solo music is ok, but not my cup of tea.

Thank you, I'm tired of hearing this same old "SOTT wouldn't be anything without W&L, W&L made the album". They're barely on it like you said, they're on the outtakes more than they are on the actual album. Sussannah contributed more to the album if you want to argue like that, but they really didn't add much to the album. As you can hear most of it is solo Prince and he sounds so much better, personally I wish he had held off on releasing the album a bit longer and had rerecorded IGBABN with the new band as it sounds much better with them. But that's just my personal opinion and what I wish had happened.

Wendy & Lisa aren't as important as the fandom makes it out to be, I think people just cling on to Nostalgia too much on here and create things to fit their ideal timeline. They were more important to previous albums, he was trying to distance himself, notice how everything they did in Strange Relationship doesn't even exist really. Once we have the version before they touch it, we can see exactly what they added and how much of it changed from the original to the released version.

Yes, I read this thread and every other thread on here bashing Wendy's guitar playing and W&L in general and that is what I came away with too stoned

Perhaps the oft told story of how these musicians allegedly made Prince better are actually the other way around. Working with him, THEY got better. But in the end, it just wasn't enough. At least he was polite about it.

I don't think anyone has ever denied that working with Prince made them a much better musician. He didn't want to go further with them, that much is clear. Whether it was the right or wrong decision we will never know.

She can't play Eruption but she can rock the heck out of a scratch rhythm and a minor chord and that is exaxctly what Prince wanted and needed for the Revoltuion. Anything else is irrelevant IMHO, her guitar playing was perfect for what was needed for that band at that time.

[Edited 11/2/20 21:44pm]

Well she can't play When Doves Cry either. She is a decent funk guitar player, not above average

and i have nothing against the girl, but thats what i hear. She didn't get the gig because she is a good guitar player.

I’ve seen her destroy on the Intro to When Doves Cry in person. She absolutely can do it and has done it countless times.

Definitely...I think he knew their limitations, and they could have never played the funky music that the NPG played later on. That live SOT movies would never have sounded as good with The Revloution as the backing band. Personally, I think the girls may have started to get on his nerves. Even listening to the SOT deluxe podcasts, gets a bit irritating as somehow they forgot that at the end of the day Prince was an artist and a businessman. They almost sound as if they were in some hippie free-love marriage.

lol Prince was a crappy businessman by any metric.

Thank God as well, imagine his legacy was all those years he didn't make music and was spending his time in boardroom's discussing his next investment. Growing his portfolio. Monetizing Purple Rain with another reissue with a few bonus tracks for the sixth time.

Prince and the Girl Bros. were magic. That doesn't detract from Prince at all. They helped him to be his best self (artistically) and vice-versa. However, he wanted to go in a different direction musically and then with the Susannah drama, disbanding the Revolution was inevitable. Rather than let things completely implode he saw the writing on the wall and had the balls and foresight to make the move when he did.

Nah...and it's time that people who have been a part of Prince's musical journey from the beginning, start to debunk this myth. They didn't help him be his "best self" artistically. That's always been either the most insulting comment made about his legacy, or the most uninsightful. Prince was a phenom before they ever played with him, and many years after. The biggest part of the problem is that for some odd reason, the Revolution voices are the only ones that are allowed to speak. They weren't even around as long as most of the people he played with. Wendy was only around 3-4 years. Lisa - 6 years. Now look at some of his other band members...Rhonda Smith was around even longer than Wendy and Lisa, about 6 years or so, give or take. Sheila E.- spans about a 10 year period off and on. Miko - 7 years, Levi - about 6 years or so. Morris Hayes - off and on for about 20 years (!). Tommy Barbarella was even around about 6-8 years. Prince connected and grew from LOTS of people artistically. In the span of his career, The Revolution years really aren't as big a time span as people think. That 1999 period, BEFORE all the Revolution hype, was the turning point in my opinion, and it didn't require either Wendy or Lisa. Just Prince, in a room, letting his creativity loose. Let's give the man his due and stop acting as if he didn't begin to know music until he put these two women in his band. It's insulting...

some of the comments i'm ready is why we need the estate to start releasing live dvd/cds of shows from 1978-1986 and 1978-1981 specifically

I remember someone saying the Revolution could not do 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' lol I thought to myself(and probably responded with) you must not have heard any shows from 1981-1984
IIWYG done on the SOTT show was nothing compared to Do Me Baby or International Lover. the SOTT shows never took that song beyond what they did. the noituloveR broke those songs DMB and IL into all kinds of raw sexy funk.

People especially need to hear more of the off night shows

ESTATE!!!?
.
the noituloveRevolution, was doing all types of styles and more specifically PURPLE music, which uniquely sounded like Prince, not other influential artists.
.
the Time, Sheila E, Prince and the 1978-1986/87 band etc unique

It is why I still have a hard time mixing Princes music from that period with other artists/genre. But I can mix his stuff after 1990 with other artists/genre. Hard to explain though

They all played what HE wanted and demanded. Simple as that.

sigh.

...tbh I've barely heard someone here saying that Wendy is a good guitar player - on the contrary, unfortenately - why all the unasked for bashing !

This is all is so irrelevant if you think further : it IS and always will be ALL about PRINCE and what HE decided or choose to have around and done by whomever HE picked to do it.

About that When Doves Cry intro solo... Prince must've liked it, no matter what you think about it.

Otherwise he easily would've changed guitar player. He had enough guitarists to pick from.

Maybe he liked what Wendy did, who are we to say.

-

And now my unasked stupid opinion : Prince himself fucked up so many of his own guitar solo's on for instance Let's Go Crazy, just because he played on a nearly bored automatic pilot - which obviously is to be seen and hear if you watch some live and TV performances after 00's.

So now we're even. wink

You do know that studio version of Alexa is Prince? And there is a version

of Alexa De Paris live from Parade tour with Wendy playing it and it's terrible full of bum notes and off key bending.

I don't think Prince liked how Wendy did WDC intro but he mmaybe thought it's acceptable.
