Outside of a few exceptions (Mountains, I Wish U Heaven, Crimson & Clover), I never thought his videos were all that great.

The ones from Purple Rain are good because they tie to the movie. Most of the rest are not that good.
The ones from 1999 are pretty much all the same!

I generally agree but they were on a scale. There were great ones like Cinnamon Girl, Musicology and Money Don't Matter 2Night. |

I think you can see that roughly after the 80s, prince went back to what he did in the 70s with his two first albums which is stick to genre. Yes there were rock songs but largely those songs were rock, the rest were rnb. After 79, he fused styles. Then after the 80s he returned to genre rules again. |

OK, I know it's easy to have decades of songs to find counterpoints, but how about this one?
What genre is Shhh?

hmmm, I don't think his first two albums were mostly RNB either, there was a lot of 'folk' in there and disco influence
I need to really listen to his 90s albums again. Because I think Prince constantly fused styles. There was always the rnb-ish style, the rock, the folk, the ballad. Rainbow Children was his 1980s expression in the 2000s 20Ten also rode heavilly on that. The Gold Experience was very fused. I just think he continued the fusing it was more watered down. |

Totally. i'd call his first two albums pop with disco but he stuck some other shit in there.
Prince was funk, R&B, new wave, punk, rock, disco, gospel, pop, soul, psychadelia...little bit of jazz, folk and hip hop in places....
It was the main reason I liked him so much since I like a lot of different styles of music and he usually blended them all so well.
Only thing I never really heard him delve into was shit like speed metal ala Metallica and Slayer. He could do light metal in the vein of Bon Jovi or even Def Leppard and maybe Sabbath but I can't think of anything he dabbled in that was thrash.

I'm gonna suggest that although the song Sister originally was not "thrash", I think that when he did it on the Lovesxy tour, he sped it up in a "thrashy" way. Does it make it thrash, maybe not but I'm willing to bet that an open minded metal fan would say "ok". But he also fused in those r+b background vocals and a heavy blusey guitar solo.
I just went to YT and looked up thrash metal and reminded myself that I really don't "prefer" it. |

Yep, I forgot the New Wave, and all that other stuff you added.
Same here, it's why I became hooked.
Yeah, never really into speed metal. They played around with it a little. Would it fit on Bambi( live @ First Avenue March 8 1982?
I need to listen to more shows 1979-1985 now |

Not in the sense that I normally think of spped metal/thrash. That was more of a blues rocker. I'm not into the genre either but can appreciate the craft of certain bands and how hard it is to play.

Sorry but Bambi is not blues rock. it's hard rock ,very heavy, maybe we can call it heavy metal.that chord progression is not used in blues but its common for heavy metal riffing |

8.8.82 is more Punk, but Bambi is in no way blues rock.the guitar riff progression is a common use in metal.Bambi is more Iron Maiden than Buddy Guy.
Peach and Dreamer are blues rock |

I'd make the point that he gave up on art around the time of Batman. The hits went to his head. All the new jack bullshit on Diamonds and Pearls sealed it. His last big hit sadly. lol
Gold was high art but also commercial but at the time he was not welcome because of the entire symbol man dipshittery, which I kind of like now. The symbol helped week out the bad fans, or fams. All you others say Hell Yea!! |

Maybe I mislabled "Bambi" as a "blues rock number" due to my ignorance. I'm not a musician so I'll defer to the experts and thanks for the education.
I meant "blues rock" more in the tradition of stuff like Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes or even the Stones (who I could easily see playing the song) and was trying to differentiate the track from what bands like Metallica or Slayer do, which is what kicked off the conversation. |

I understand, but blues have certain progressions that are used all the time and the way Prince plays power chords, that progression is not blues related. Metallica is trash metal.
I mean all is good maybe hard rock is the best term |

^^^No worries^^^
I learned something there and am not ashamed to admit when I fuck up.
Getting back on track though: to me, any time Prince "compromised", the answer was usually pretty simple and obvious to me:
"money"
I think he went well out of his way to make sure that wasn't a main issue or prime motivation for the things he did but there were times where it was obvious he needed a cash infusion to continue his path (Batman, D&P, Musicology, granting interviews like the Larry King thing with Rave and shilling on MTV). He led a pretty extravagent lifestyle. Decorating every inch of everywhere he lived, new clothes seemingly every day, couple of wives, etc.
At a certain point, you need some checks rolling in.
Overall, I'd say he did a pretty good job keeping his artistic integrity intact for the most part. He knew when to poke his head out from behind the purple curtain and do just enough to be commercial without doing shit like selling his songs to advertisers or letting Coca Cola sponsor his concerts. |
