Walking In Glory I was just listening to "Walking In Glory" from the new expanded SOTT boxed set and I noticed that there are striking parallels to "2 Nigs United for West Compton." Start around the 3 minute mark and listen through. The lead guitar and vocal are different, but the backing instruments sound like the same track. Did anyone else catch this?

Wow. Good on you. It didn't even make it into the liner notes. They mention that it was recorded on the same day as Bob George -- so it seems like it would be notworthy to point out the other Black Album connection. But if the song was bootlegged previously, maybe others already made the connection. It was new to me!

It's hard not to notice it given its a near exact replica of the song. I reckon Prince just did not feel comfortable with the overt religiousity of the song, stripped out the vocals, and made what amounts to a 12" instrumental mix.

- You reckon wrong, "2 Nigs utd 4 West Compton" evolved from a jam with Sheila E that was also mixed into parts of the already recorded "Walkin' In Glory" Bitch this ain't the movies

I think the music is the same...love it. Gives great hope that a super remaster of the Black Album will be possible...cuz that one sounds as bad as SOTT did before the remaster.

Interesting. I wasn't aware of that, but it didn't seem like the whole track was the same to me -- just the latter half. So I guess it makes sense that he spliced it in for elsewhere. In any case, it's a good track that I hadn't heard before.

I woud love a remaster of the Black Album. The official version always seemed a bit anemic to me.

The facts I posted point out this could not be the case. Why would he “strip out” the vocals from “Walkin” to create an instrumental when he already had the instrumental recorded, as a separate track? Bitch this ain't the movies

Why would he “strip out” the vocals from “Walkin” to create an instrumental when he already had the instrumental recorded, as a separate track? Obviously they weren't both release candidates at the same time and WiG wasn't used at the party. What the minute processes were, which really isn't as evident as you propose, is a minor point. The primary point I was making was about why, which I still believe is because one was overtly religious at a level beyond what he'd done previously and one was instrumental. Obviously this isn't the first time he did such a thing and was deciding what the artistic statement he was trying to make was. One could probably wager a guess that there wasn't much separation between these songs at their inceptions.

They talked about this on the official podcast, which is excellent btw.

Wouldn't it fit nicely right away after A Place In Heaven like a kind of sequel?

Walking in Glory is a true masterpiece. I like the idea of him just letting go and saying anything goes. I mean a rocking lead guitar line over a gospel song. Sick man. Prince was a mad genius!

yes...and they are both masterpieces individually

Walkin In Glory is my favorite new track on this set. It's spectacular!! Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

Just because of the themes and lyrics, did it flow well?

Never understood why Prince recorded 2 Nigs, I understand even less the fact that he'd let anyone else hear it. Same goes for Walking In Glory. It really tries to be energetic and uplifting and ends up being annoying noise. . I love the SOTT SDE set, and even more the black album, this just doesn't work for me. At all. Glad you all seem to like it though. Paisley Park is in your heart - Love Is Here!

. Bass solo in 2 Nigs? It's a guitar solo, played on a bass. As much as I love Prince's playing, I've never loved his bass playing. Still, my problem, I suppose. I'm slightly allergic to fusion, which is where it squarely fits in. Luckily, Prince's music is so multifaceted, plenty other stuff for me to enjoy. And plenty people to enjoy the bits that don't work for me. Same reason, I suppose, why I love the Madhouse 8 album (apart from 6), but can't get into later Madhouse or Eric Leeds stuff. . There's a difference in playing between someone that started on bass or on guitar. Prince was ok with slap style bass (something that he mostly did when he played bass live), for which he seemed to be mostly influenced by Larry Graham (although there's plenty of other, mostly fusion, players he also channels). For finger style playing, he either used a pick or a synth. if you are not a player, it's hard to explain. For instance, Levi Seacer is another example. During the Lovesexy and SOTT shows, he had bass solos, but the way he played, it is basically how a guitar player would play a solo. It just feels wrong to me, coming from the bass. Funny how a part of a gospel song made it's way into that dark evil LP, isn't it? If you take any of this seriously, you're a bigger fool than I am.
