Anger and hurt, yes; but not self-mockery (perhaps self-ridicule would be a better term). This was a guy that, even when covering Radiohead's 'Creep', directed the contempt outwards at someone else, rather than inwards. But, here, there's a sense that he's registering something laughable about his going out "on the prowl" in the circumstances - and, for me, it's a nice acknowledgment his own vulnerability. - Agree. He wasn't the strongest around on self-reflection, let alone sefl-rdicule of self-mockery like you say. He fled into religion and well, that's never much of any good help. The song Reflection, and also that he l-mayed it live with Wendy, was for me the only moment of and acceptable Prince. I can't understand he didn't move on from that point of little revelatory moves. What actually happend that caused this in the first place, meeting up with Wendy ? There is no self-mockery here, but some kind of rare vulnerability shown. That's what I tend to believe. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

So Other versions (alternate ones ) are circulating it seems......maybe the copy tape version of this famous Multitrax version erased by Prince does exist somewhere in the hand of some collectors & Prince's lovers ?

On the tape that Wally had in his collection, it was labeled "Wally Piano-Vocal" but then the "piano-vocal" is scratched out with an ink pen, so I'm guessing this is the tape that was recorded over.

SquirrelMeat said: I'll clear it up for you. Hilarious! Seriously though...I'm just excited to have an official release of Wally. Y'all are stressing over the possibility of the original more emotional take. Enjoy what we do have. I'm so thankful Wally was considered important enough to give us "officially". "Music is healing. This song has good stuff going for it namely the sadness of the vocal But it's too overblown and some if the lyrics flat out suck Not quite the holy grail promised
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Even the original Wally may even have been a letdown if we weren't given the emotional context behind it

The fact it was deleted tells you more about prince than the song itself
It's actually a very big overblown stagey NPG kind of arrangement [Edited 11/15/20 2:13am]

I didn't like it especially (like 2/5), but reading the lyrics made me like it more (like 3/5). Prince was really a good lyricist at the time. But that's clearly not the promised holy grail.
