Her reaction to the released version is very curious. "it's like basically the same except the emotion" on a song she hasn't heard in 30 years? I wish this song were better than it is for all this conflama.

Right? I guess part of it is she built it up in her head, and got everyone so hyped.

She explains pretty well that she was aching for him to sing some blues that matched the mood, so that part makes sense. I'm sure the moment is what she described at least. Quivering voice delivery or not, it's never going to be the most honest song he's written.

Uhm this is what neversin replyed to someone who asked about this post of youtrs:

I honestly don't know... I don't remember ever telling this person "Strive" anything about the piano demo of "Wally" personally, so either he got it from someone else or he read an old Google+ post from a couple of years ago I did about it and is mixing that info with something else...
Besides some of that info in that post is definitely not from me...
A copy of the piano demo still exists because, as usual with his other piano or guitar "demos" he used as the basic track, Prince made a copy and used that for "Wally #2" (or he used the original and kept the copy as a backup...) He did this for a lot of tracks...

I also don't know anything about the mono leak of "Wally #2", the person who did the transfer (or his friend did it...) contacted me once and told me how he knew the source personally and how he got the material that he got... A genuine good guy who's not out for buck but eventually got fucked over by some cunts, as usual...

Neversin.

Yeah, I messed up. Confused somebody else for Neversin. My apologizes to him. I didn't mean to confuse the two.

Anyone want to decipher this?

Despite the "did this for a lot of tracks" talk, this makes zero sense. It sounds like this was a cassette demo, there would be no reason to back it up when going to tape unless he was creating multi-track demos on cassette or some madness. Doesn't add up.

What am I not following?

I'm pretty sure it means he recorded over the piano demo on the tape with the tape copy of Wally 2 mixdown, but had a backup copy of the actual piano demo on a different tape.

Has anyone asked WALLY SAFFORD if he has the cassette?
Remember, he was recently sued by the estate and it couldn't have been over just his little book.

Of course it wasn't over the book - the documents attest to that.

Wally did indeed make a deal that got him into trouble. This was prior to the book's writing.

The original piano demo wasn't on cassette then? It's not the same as Babyless or Babycakes or Babyshakes, or whatever it's called?

I'll clear it up for you.

The demo version #1 exists but only underneath the full version #2. The full version #1 wasn't erased, but was replaced with the demo version #1. There was a demo version #2, but that transported to another dimension. The full version #3 was later used as the basic track for Purple and Gold. This was a frankenstein version because the original was eaten by an un-named band members dog.

I've based this profile on really clear communications from those that are clearly in 'the know'. I hope my vagueness is enought to hold up to any scrutiny.

It goes like this:

Babyshakes (2 tape copies)
Wally 1 (erased master, 1 copy recorded to tape on a Babyshakeless tape)
Wally 2 (master, 1 copy recorded to tape on a Neurotic Lemon Baby Cake tape)

Here's what I'm getting from my limited, half effort reading of the versions described:

The tracking for Babyless was used as a base for Wally #1, Wally #1 didn't have as many overdubs and was subsequently erased but Babyless was still in existence. Later, Babyless was used as a base for Wally #2 but of course we all know this version had many additional overdubs

my take ...

babyless is pnm83 style piano demo on cassette and they have it .. it is the basic structure for wally

wally 1 was in the studio on piano .. prince overdubbed the hell out of it .. made a cassette of the massively overdubbed version .. then erased the multitrack .. they have a copy but do not have a copy of wally 1 pre overdub mess as no mix was made

wally 2 was based upon the wally 1 mix down with all the overdubs .. this is the version we got

i wonder if some of the hemming and hawing was over which version to include as wally 1 would have disappointed as it is probably a mess to listen to but technically has the actual original wally under the mix .. the one we got is finished .. perhaps the other version was one of the tracks we got hinted didn't make the cut and fans wouldn't be happy about it

This is what I got in the mail this mornig from someone regarding this again:

****
I see that guy from that public Discord group posted my message on Prince.org, so I guess you contacted him or he contacted you? No real problem, fuck Prince.org, I'm done there so I'm not posting shit there anymore, as with most of the other Discord groups...
But remember that this is a PRIVATE Discord and sharing info to the outside is frowned upon, I'll let you slide because I'm not posting on Prince.org anymore and this is regarding a post there, so feel free to share this too... I'll be here for the while being and I know and trust most ol' skoolers here, but we'll be gone here too in time...

But anyway, no... I didn't mean he used the demo tape as the basic track as in that he used it and did overdubs, I meant he used it as a reference or as the basis to record "Wally" #2" (and maybe also "Wally" #1 but I'm not sure as I don't have a date for the demo...) Wrong wording on my part...
I'm not sure if the demo is a multitrack (piano and voice) but, like with a lot of his piano or guitar demos, this one is probably too, but neither track is used on "Wally"...
If someone in here has the date for the demo (verified only of course...) I'll hook you up with something interesting (alternate) to listen to regarding these tracks...

Neversin.
****

Please tell me somone has the date for the demo?? Maybe we can then share whatever he has to offer in return? I just don;'t know which private Discord he is on and the guy who mailed won;t tell me. If omeone in here does, I'm very interested wink

Even if we were to hear the cassette the likelihood that it would live up to the hype now is miniscule.

We have a better chance of being blown away by something we have never heard of before. There may well be some later vault tracks that are open emotionally and vulnerable - as 'Way Back Home' is, for example. In the unreleased song 'Grace' from 2015/16, Prince is said to confront his mortality. That's the kind of material I'd be particularly interested in hearing as I don't believe 'Way Back Home' would've been a one-off lyrically.

She always told it the same way:

A mix was made on a cassette,

then the mutitrack-tape was deleted.

She didn't know, that it was re-recorded, because she was not present at the re-recording-session!

It seems he did a fuller and detailed explanation of the tapes when someone provided him the date of the piano demo yesterday (with proof aparently) and he shared a sample of an alternate take of Wally with that person. Sadly enough I'm not high up enough to be shared this info and he told the person not to share anything from that private Discord to public boards and sites and specifiacally mentioned Prince.org.

Sorry to throw a further spanner in the works when it comes to Wally's lineage, but can anyone else hear Wally's melody in 'Love and Sex'. I know they are two very different songs but to me they're structured in a similar fashion. They also both start a line with an exuberant "Check Me Out"

"Check me out, a little bit forward but I'm speaking my mind"

"Check me out Wally, I'm on the prowl tonight."

I have to say, as a corollary to the comment that the original would never live up to the hype, that I really like the version of Wally that we have. For me, it delivers as a heartfelt breakup song.

Susan says in the interview that, "It's like Witness for the Prosecution. He went from a position of vulnerability to a position of 'I'm fine. I'm gonna be fine. Oh yeah, I'm hurt but I'm tough. I can take it'", but I don't get that from it at all. I get anger, hurt, even a bit of self-mockery, which is rarely there in Prince's work.

Others have analogised the now-released version to the inferior, less personal second version of Old Friends 4 Sale. Obviously it's not possible to know, and it could well be that, like OF4S, the original version was indeed beautifully revealing of its author's vulnerability. But it's certainly not the case that none of that made it into the re-recorded song, whereas it seems to me that, had we only ever heard OF4S v.2, we'd thnk it a pretty but not particularly arresting Vault track. Wally v.2 is a gem, though.

I call BS on this revisionist history. If somebody had the cassette or audio of the first "Wally" it would have leaked by now. It's just a legend. Maybe just a myth. We'll never hear it if it exists. If somebody had it they would be trying to sell if for big bucks right now. I'm done taking this bait. LOL. Deleting from the tracks of my mind.
