Some very cool and funky GEMS:

MadSex

Come On

and Wasted Kisses and The One are gorgeous.

Another underrated album.

Newpower Soul is a MASSIVELY underrated album. Seriously.

There's actually not a bad track on there. It's SO MUCH fun. I genuinely love it.

Last time I played Freaks On This Side it actually brought tears to my eyes, it's so good.

CANNOT WAIT for the vinyl release..... please let it happen! Only bad thing about this album is the mastering on the CD.

Always gives off a great summer vibe, probably cuz it came out in June and I wore that thing _out_.

Looking back, 1998 was an awesome year, even though the music at the time wasn't what I thought I wanted. But we kicked off the year with Crystal Ball, The Truth, then into New Power Soul, the Come On Maxi, Come 2 My House, The War, Beautiful Strange, a ton of TV appearances... a great late-period year, and you could tell he was searching for what to do next. I'm not sure "34 instrumental jazz albums" was quite what anyone expected... but oh well.

I do have a soft spot for this album in my heart. By no means is it a masterpiece or even something I would ever expose nonfans to without a heavy dose of irony.

I'll never not believe The One is his best ballad since Scandalous.

If they're Dylan, Springsteen or McCartney fans you better not, but everyone I know who's into funk or black music in general, without being specifically a Prince fan, loved what they heard when they heard it at home nod

.
I mean, seriously, how not to groove on these jams unless your heart is cold as a stone?

.

Regardless, I'm glad to see a little love for this record here. It made my summer in 1998 and I still love it madly yes

The height of Prince's acrylic production aesthetic. It's dry, lacks aural depth, feels thin, and is generally uninteresting. The only moderately engaging songs are "Wasted Kisses," "The One." The message of "Until U're In My Arms Again" is sweet and sad.

The lack of a live band sound (a la Exodus or Goldnigga) hampers the overall feel of the record.

Your heart is cold like a stone.

It's the only scientific explaination I can find to what you just wrote.

I'm sure if you go to a doctor and ask for a heart scan, he will confirm this nod lol

The beat is basically "Forever in My Life" with that keyboard line on top.

It produced 3 really good songs, including 1 great one in “The One”, but it’s near the bottom of the pile for me.

I didn't tell TrvialPursuit "you're the one who's dry, lacks aural depth, feels thin, and is generally uninteresting" because I was waiting for you to do it! How disappointing! sad lol

it wouldn't have worked anyway, like you said, heart of stone. insults can't touch the guy. if "come on" can't warm the deepest cockles of your heart, there's something wrong. that beat takes me to ethereal places.

Not sorry - that album is just boring. And it's mainly due to the production. As I said, if there was a full band on it like Exodus, it'd be slammin'.

I took it as nothing but a fun ribbing.

But I stand by my statement. NPS is cold oatmeal.

By the way, a fellow Orger, from another country, sent me a voice message on Facebook earlier today. He recited Databank's "cold heart... go see a doctor" comment. It was already funny, but with an accent, it was fucking hysterical. At the end he says, "EL. OH. EL." HAHAHAHAHA I've listened to it a dozen times already.

It is a bitchin’ album, fun for the most part. Some duff AF tracks spoil the overall effect. Some highly questionable production choices similarly mar the proceedings.
.
But man, there’s some choice songwriting here. “When U Love Somebody” is a fine-cut gem. Pop perfection. “Shoo-Bed-Doo” is a marvel too. “Come On” is slammin’...
.
“Until Ur In My Arms” is a beautiful song with a stunning vocal. But it’s over-produced.
.
The album’s secret weapon: the magnificent horn arrangements. The horns elevate even the weaker material like “Freaks on This Side.”
I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.
