1 song that proves that Prince is a Genius? So you discuss music with a friend and you can pick one song that proves in your opinion that Prince is Genius.Which song is it and why? For me its When Doves Cry.from the first note of the song you know you are in for something special .Weird guitar intro that only Prince can play ,robotic vocals and stripped to the bone musical background.Maybe the weirdest sounding pop hit along with Tom Tom Club's Genius Of Love

Little Red Corvette. A perfect musical creation. With lyrics that even the greatest lyricists admire.

WDC. Intro solo aside: the genre bending. Metal guitar. Pop synth. Electrofunk/dance drums. Classical keyboard solo bordering on psychedelia (imitating doves). Sure, he took out the bass which was unconventional. He also invented an electronic drum sound. Everyone else used programmed sounds - that was a major reimagining of an instrument's capabilities, like Hendrix did with electric guitar. The keyboard hook is world famous. The lyrics are unconventional for a chart-topper, and "this is what it sounds like when doves cry" is one of Prince's two most famous idioms, the other being "party like it's 1999." Impactul solos and lyrics. Musically and lyrically impressive but a popular smash at the same time. It's not even the most musically complex song on the album but I think a happy medium of him excelling in most of his usual departments.
Whoever said "Batdance" isn't wrong, either. And might I add "Controversy" as an early flash of genius: what it's lacking in virtuosity it more than makes up for with the keyboard stab in the middle of the Lord's Prayer.

I would like to mention Crystal Ball, for me in particular the longer version from the 1998 release by the same name (with the orchestration). That song is a trip!!! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Totally. I've come to think of the synths and the beat together like a film noir. No one else would have put this song together like he did, or thought of this song in the first place. It's so simple but endlessly complex.

I was about to say this. Epic solo track. Before violet says; yes Susanhah was on backing vocals. And done an inspirational painting . Morris Hayes spoke about P playing him it in a recent interview. He asked him how he done it all by himself and P said he had it all in his head and lay the 10 min drum track down first.

Nothing from Purple Rain will be a popular choice BUT: the production on Darlin' Nikki is genius. [Edited 10/1/20 11:28am] Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.
