all the fuss over SOTT actually makes me feel a bit sad about how prince's life ended

i realise this is a bit of a downer at a time when everyone is really excited about the SOTT release, but i cant help thinking that it is tragic that a guy who gave me/us/people so much joy and happiness (prince really opened up a whole world of music and other artists to me, if it wasnt for him, i wouldnt have investigated as much as i did, and even though theres many of his songs i dont much care for, i loved the man regardless), ended up all alone at the end.

he did SO much recording, and we loved him for it, but he ended up living alone in his workplace, with (from what i know, im happy to be corrected here) little family around him, no partner.

i guess you could say, it doesnt matter - prince was happiest when recording, performing, writing, few people get to do what he did, etc, but i cant help feeling a bit weird that while i love hearing all the songs he spent so much of his life making and dedicating himself to, it seemed to come at the cost of other parts of his life, that whatever it was that music helped him avoid or escape from, in the end, all he had was the music, ultimately.

Prince was an immensely talented and driven person who had power and possibilities "normal" people only dream of. Had he wanted a different sort of life, he could/would have had it.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I get the sense Prince wanted a fair amount of control over his life. Having reciprocal, adult relationships with a spouse and close friends requires compromise and may include some upset from time-to-time. I just don't see him wanting to go through that. He did pay a price, though.

For the most part, Prince lived his life in the absolute, uncompromising, way he always wanted to. Even up until the very end. There is something astounding about that even if he left us too early.

-

Also, I feel fortunate that his greatest joy (creating music) will continue to be a source of joy for all of us for the rest of our time. Again, it is astounding how much music he made in his lifetime.

Prince had free will.

He could have chosen to find an age appropriate partner. He could have chosen to slow down in his later years. He could have accepted the fact that he was aging. He could have downsized his lifestyle so he couldn't have had to tour so much to pay the bills. He could have found peace and happiness in the act of creation without having to be at the forefront of the zeitgeist. He could have found peace in submitting to his religion and laying down his ego.

There's alot of things he could have done but he picked his path. Tragic but you can't change it. Just be happy that his self-destruction bore so much fruit unlike other people who disappear into their drug addiction or personal problems. It's a miracle he was able to function so well.

What a pathetic projection. "I wish Prince was just exactly like me!" Age appropriate partner? You sound wacky.

In the last few years he looked ill to me. My guess is that he continued to do the things that brought him the most joy; recording, performing, coaching (Judith).

He still had people in his life; Judith, Tamron, Josh/Hannah, Bobby Z etc.

Having said that, none of those people were as close as a spouse, children etc.

We all want our intimates around when we are ill. Not having that was probably

lonely for him.

Exactly. I remember reading an article where Alan Leeds suggested that Prince "tone it down" a bit, and wear normal clothes like jeans and such. Prince replied "why, so I can look like you?!"

Prince wanted the rock star life. People have stated that Prince was always "Prince". You wouldn't see him in the hallway at PP in jeans with no makeup and then see him later all done up. He was always done up. He wanted it that way.

The music - he has stated that it was a gift from God and who was he to question that gift? It was his job here to put that music out. Everything else . . . the wardrobe, makeup, women, homes, cars, etc. were all him living out that rock star dream.

Speaking of "he could have". Just think that last Saturday on Earth when he told that small crowd at PP when he showed his New Guitar, after having that near death scare after the Atlanta concert he could have flew onto California to start his treatment instead of meeting with that crown, I guess example he loved the Music more.... eye crysball

While I am indeed sad that he has passed, I feel quite blessed that I lived in the time period that he was alive and giving us such amazing music. Physically he is gone but he lives on in the music.

Prince lived how he lived and died the way he died. That's all there is to it really. Let's just celebrate this funky man and give thanks for the joy he gave us. Everything else is between him, his loved ones and God.

He had $15,000,000 in cash, almost a million in gold bars, and several properties that he could sell if he needed funds. The Turks & Caicos estate was on the market before he died, as was 8016 Dakota.
Even if nothing else had sold, that $16 million would have paid his personal expenses and those of Paisley Park for several years.

Going out to the people and gifting them with music was his obvious joy in life.
If you think about it, expensive private jets during the P&M tour likely took most of the profits. Few venues were ultra-large.

Probably very true. He wanted to have a child on this earth, but was given one in Heaven instead. He wanted more than just music and women at one time, at least.
