A pretty worthy attempt at a thankless task all things considered.

If anyone comes across a list of the albums previously included that are now left off i'd love to see that. It'd probably be an even more interesting list.

What a surprise, rock critics seem incapable of not comparing Prince to the beatles. They even mention Bob Seger. Prince himself thought that was ridiculous and said so but these fools will never learn.

Here's a hot take: Prince was better than The Beatles; and Purple Rain is for damn sure better than Nirvana's Nevermind lol

You consider that a hot take? On prince.org? In 2020?

#45 for SOTT sounds a bit low to me but I´m surprised , and happy, that Purple Rain made it to #8 but seeing those other albums that are ranked higher than Purple Rain is a bit frustrating.

Those top albums of all time lists don´t mean that much anyway. I am not a Led Zeppelin fan but keep in mind that it took the Rolling Stone several decades until they finally understood Led Zep´s relevance and quality. These lists don´t really mean much and in no way reflect my personal tastes and likings or my idea of "great" albums.

Dirty Mind is also listed at #326.

Rolling Stone lists are usually quite off-putting, but this one is a lot better than what they usually put out there. Still, 9 Beatles albums is hard to stomach, especially with 5 in the top 35.

I swear I remember reading one of these as a teen and it was like 9 Beatles albums in the Top 10.

Absolutely ahead of both, IMO. If I had my way, The Beatles would have 0 albums in the list. lol

10 - Miseducation
9 - Blood On the Tracks
8 - Purple Rain
7 - Rumours
6 - Nevermind
5 - Abbey Road
4 - Songs In the Key of Life
3 - Blue
2 - Pet Sounds
1 - What's Going On

The only one of those I haven't played ALOT and really fallen in love with is Marvin - so guess what I'm playing as I type this? Which is the most you can expect from these kinds of lists. It can trigger you to look at something or take another look. The actual merits of the ranking is barely worth thinking about though.

I’m not above it at all. Hell, I’m a Kylie Minogue fan. Their music has just never connected with me. I’ve tried with 3 of their albums (the top 3 in this list, coincidentally), and I just don’t like them. I can enjoy some similar-ish music by contemporaries like The Kinks, but The Beatles have just never done it for me.

I don’t begrudge Beatles fans or think they are wrong for liking the Beatles or anything silly like that. Just not for me.

I agree with yout take about these lists. In this case, I actually think it is a decent top 10. While it is not mine, I would turn the volume up if any of these somehow came on over the radio.

I have all the albums ahead of Purple Rain and I'm fine with them being there. I'm surprised anyone has a problem with Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell and Marvin Gaye being in front of Prince. Those are magnificent albums.

Well, after having read your post, I agree with you when it comes to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Joni, and I bet even Prince himself would´ve agreed with their positions being higher than Purple Rain. However, I don´t understand why the Beach Boys and Nirvana ranked higher than Prince. I understand that Nirvana were important, but...were they really THAT important ? And Lauryn Hill at #10 boggles the mind. I like her album but come on, #10 ? Totally overrated and in hindsight a very controversial album as far as credits are concerned.

And Dirty Mind is ranked way too low but that´s just my opinion.

I´m a big Marvin Gaye fan and have all his albums and his biography but....#1 ? It´s cool though, I´m happy with that, it´s a fantastic album but I´m surprised that it´s #1.

Beyonce's Lemonade at 32? Kanye West's MBDTF, a record so overproduced it makes your ears bleed. Abbey Road, The Beatles' best album at 5?!

Still, they've rated Purple Rain higher than any other list, though it should really be Number 1.

Overproduced? many people could say the same about PR, WGO is a very good album, but the best album ever? no way.

Well, I'm proud of Prince in the top 10 (!!!).

Sign ☮️ The Times is however his biggest accomplishment and the journos know this, why is that album so low?

And 1999 is the album that made the 80's soundscape. But instead of bundle it together with other albums with that 80's cheese, it stand on it's own pillar to this day, Both in production and execution. Why is that not in the top 20?

Purple Rain is probably the only album where I'm not tempted to hit the skip button.
