uhh SOTT the title track is political, surely? the professor does seem forced in, and she does kinda go off on a tangent that isnt related to this particular song, but hey, they are discussing the social climate of the day, so... It's political adjacent at best. Ultimately it follows his typical approach in the 80s of saying politics are terrestrial games and that religion was the real path. But I don't agree with anyone implying race relations are political. No, there's racists on every platform. Race relations are a human issue regardless of alignment.

this guy definitely did speak loudly and forcefully several times during his career on race issues, and it's admirable, but isn't this also the same guy who prided himself on not voting and pulled all this "you never really had a voice" bullshit?

i mean, i think prince wasnt into party politics, clearly had no interest in elections (and ofc, he didnt need to, he was rich) and often sounded politically immature so it was prob best he didnt do it too much, but: "A sister killed her baby 'cause she couldn't afford to feed it/And yet we're sending people to the moon" does sound like a political criticism, one against state spending. its also one he made a few times, that theres plenty of problems in the US, so why have foreign aid basically. kinda politically naive, but you can see what he was getting at (fix the problems at home first if youve got the money to spend overseas).

One could be forgiven for thinking you're obssessed...especially with someone who had nothing to do with the making of the album. Sheesh. Get over him. [Edited 9/10/20 18:01pm]

Part of why the academic analysis can irk is that its retrospective. Trying to apply something that wasnt quite true at the time. While the test of the podcast is very much in the moment. At the time prince was seen as a crossover artist. Someone burrowing down his own alternative path, both in the mainstream as well as outside it. So if the political analysis is a bit heavy handed, her cultural analysis if prince aa an avatar of black non mainstream music, is right

Thankfully, unlike the rest of y'all, I actually like Prince.

I wasn't crazy about her analysis, it was interesting and i'm definitely looking forward to reading her essay in the box but I hope she is also willing to address/acknowledge that Prince wrote the "straightforwardly patriotic" song America and spoke a few times in the (early) 1980s about his admiration for Reagan.

i dont want any heavy handed 'recontextualising' essays tbh like, that stuff is great for academic essay books on prince or whatever, idk if i need to see it in a cd.

I really enjoyed the part about "The Cross". I found it fascinating that he wrote and performed these songs as a form of reprntence from the lustful songs he wrote. It makes the "religious" songs even more powerful to me. Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

I loved Susan’s comments about the drum pace picking up and how he would play things without hearing the other parts through headphones. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! smh idk why i still frequent this place lol i guess out of habit. i loved the input of the professor. she said nothing wrong. sucks that Prince has fans that are either racist or ignore race relations, police brutality, etc. it's like they live in paisley park or any of these fictitional places and refuse to see reality for what it is. just because you act like things don't occur means they don't. they do! especially for us as black folk. it's important to look at Prince's choices and decisions from that point of view.

- All of a sudden i have to think of the moment when i heard he changed "The Cross" in "The Christ"... Gosh, what a 'ducked up' choice that was. -

- @Strive : You don't have to listen to it. you don't have to read it. you do not necessary have to comment on it. You can be as free as you like, and skip it. Just like you skip some songs by Prince you don't like. - This type of 'nonsense' is what i certainly love to read/hear more about. It's educational and relevant. Peace though. - "The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

"That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."
