Hear, hear! I'm not sure if the relative paucity of outtakes from the 79-81 period is due to what Prince recorded or what is known. Even if there isn't enough material to substantiate a full super deluxe of each individual album, pairing them could work: I can imagine a Dirty Mind and Controversy joint super deluxe and the thought of it has me salivating.

Dirty Mind and Controversy SDE's have potential to be revelatory and far, far, far better than I've seen most people anticipate them being.

I've seen heaps of people talk about how there's little vault material of the era, but if you look at the unreleased songs page on PVault, there's quite easily enough for a full vault disc each, and that's just what we know about, I'd reckon there's at least a little more not listed there. Combine that with the consistently killer live shows of the era and you have a legendary release.

Definitely! I think I want SDEs of Dirty Mind and Controversy more than any other albums that haven't received the deluxe treatment.

Regarding quantity of material for them, I guess we'll have to hope we see what's out there. Supposing there is one vault disc each, that would mean we'd probably be looking at 4CD+1DVD sets (with the album/edits and b-sides/vault/live audio/live DVD format). The second discs according to this format look like they would be pretty sparse, however. As far as I can tell, the only known edits/remixes/alternative versions/B-sides that could be included are:

"Dirty Mind" 7" Edit
"Dirty Mind" 7" Edit (alternate version from the Phillipines)
"Dirty Mind" 7" Edit (mono)
"Uptown" 7" Edit
"Uptown" 7" Edit (mono)
"Partyup" 7" Edit

"Controversy" 7" Edit
"Controversy" 7" Edit (mono)
"Let's Work" 7" Edit
"Let's Work" 7" Edit (mono)
"Let's Work" (Dance remix)
"Do Me, Baby" 7" Edit
"Gotta Stop (Messin' About)"

A more economical approach would be to add these to the first disc, seeing that the albums themselves are quite short, making for a 3CD+1DVD package for the super deluxe.

Under this approach, I could see something like this happening:

  • Dirty Mind remaster
    • CD1: album + edits
  • Dirty Mind deluxe remaster
    • CD1: album + edits
    • CD2: vault
  • Dirty Mind super deluxe remaster
    • CD1: album + edits
    • CD2: vault
    • CD3: live audio
    • DVD: live concert footage
  • Controversy remaster
    • CD1: album + edits/remixes/B-sides
  • Controversy deluxe remaster
    • CD1: album + edits/remixes/B-sides
    • CD2: vault
  • Controversy super deluxe remaster
    • CD1: album + edits/remixes/B-sides
    • CD2: vault
    • CD3: live audio
    • DVD: live concert footage
  • Rude Boy super duper deluxe remaster
    • CD1: Dirty Mind + edits
    • CD2: Controversy + edits/remixes/B-sides
    • CD3: vault from Dirty Mind era
    • CD4: vault from Controversy era
    • CD5: live audio from Dirty Mind concert
    • CD6: live audio from Controversy concert
    • DVD: Dirty Mind show and Controversy show (maybe 2 DVDs?)

I'm not sure how the math would work out in terms of LPs, but I think this would have a lot of appeal as an approach with a variety of options for varying consumer desires.

I'm all for a "Dirty Mind" deluxe set. Someone a few weeks ago designed an imaginary deluxe and it looked cool. The Rebels stuff could be included in the "Prince" 1979 deluxe.

The Rebels doesn't go on a set from two years after it was recorded though.

No, it's not. Besides, I don't like chips.
