Wendy & Lisa first heard an embryonic version of "Sign O The Times" on 3 July 1986 at a soundcheck

https://www.facebook.com/...9152237437

.
(post from Friday, July 3, 2020):

.

*Wendy recently mentioned that as her and Lisa walked into McNichol’s Arena for soundcheck, Prince was playing what would become Sign “O” the Times” onstage and that was the first time she heard that groove*

.
On July 3, 1986, Prince and The Revolution played in Denver, Colorado at McNichol’s Arena. It was part of their Hit and Run Tour and was in front of a sold out crowd of 18,000. This show is legendary because it’s the only time that Prince’s (and Wendy and Lisa’s) idol, Joni Mitchell, joined them on stage for backing vocals on Purple Rain.

.

Strive

Hmmmm. Interesting time line.

Soundchecking the groove on July 3, earthquake July 13, studio recorded July 15.

"Michael Howe: Actually this only came to fruition for me at least, when we were doing research into the overall body of work. Apparently, Prince and Susannah Melvoin were in LA in July of 86 and there was an earthquake, I think July 12th or July 13th 86. An earthquake that literally shook Prince to the core, and the following day, he picked up a copy of the LA Times, and there was basically a headline and a story that almost verbatim, detailed what is in the song, Sign O’ The Times: there’s a gang called the disciples, there’s discussions of crack, machine guns, there’s basically everything that’s articulated in the song, was lifted almost verbatim out of this article, interpolated basically from this article. "

"July 1986 was an unusually active month for moderate to strong earthquakes in California, with three events occurring in less than two weeks. Each had mild to moderate effects and began on July 8 with the event near Palm Springs. The second event was a M5.8 shock that occurred off the coast of Oceanside on July 13."

"Basic tracking took place on 15 July 1986 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California (the same day as the unreleased track Blanche)."

Why would he be soundchecking without them? He was already doing sessions without the Revolution at that point? The story just raised a lot of questions.

Yeah cuz it's probably bs and just more reaching from Stretch Armstrong-Melvoin.

Wouldn't they have included themselves more if they were stretching? It's just an odd story that contradicts their version of Prince adding guests in Japan and realizing it was over. Sure enough, Miko is already on tour with them, but now they're saying they saw Prince running through music they knew was important without them, at a soundcheck, without them, and they're mentioning it casually like that's not even the story? It changes the story. Plus it's the same time as the Dream Factory sessions. It's the week they record Eggplant. It's like someone forgot to tell them Purple Rain was just a movie.

The overreach is more subtle and petty, it doesn't even need to be a story.

Just another microaggression meant to insinuate herself into Prince's creative mind.

Further, they were the ones who left first and the man likely was quite hurt and embarrassed by that so if he didn't invite them to the jam session then oh the fuck well. Guess their attempt at 4D chess-ing their way into his writing process backfired and he began writing his best material when they weren't around.

I think it's bleed over from other places on the internets where people seem to think the way to express their love of Prince is competing over who can be cattier and more venomous towards the people who played key roles in his life and work. That's a bigger topic though.

"Wendy recently mentioned..." - what is the source for that. This is not W&L's official facebook page, is it? At least I couldn't find a source for this comment.

Person who made entire story up out of one innocent line doesn't like it when other people lie.

.

You lot spurned an entire conspiracy out of W&L entering a soundcheck and hearing Prince working on some music.

Why is this a stretch?
They would theoretically have to enter the sound check, right? Why is it hard to believe prince was already there, playing music? Do u think it only makes sense that they all enter the sound check together, at the same time? Is it a stretch to think Prince might play something new? They had to hear the song at some point, right? So when do you think the appropriate time was for W&L to hear the song?

I don;t see any issues here. Prince played music all the time with and without others. On the road if he wanted to try something new it makes sense he would go to a sound check early. No big deal. SOTT is mostly a drum machine and bass track. He may have been experimenting with the drum machine but yet to have all the words to put it with.

These folks practically lived together for 3-4 years. I don't see any controversy here.

It's funny how people who have no firsthand knowledge or personal experience with the situation... are so quick to call bullshit.

The very first time I met Wendy I mentioned to her, the last time I was in the same place as her, was July 3, 1986 at McNichols arena.

She told me about a huge fight between her and Prince at the hotel in Sheridan Wyoming. I'm not going to elaborate on the personal details of the fight, but Prince was so pissed at her, that when she arrived to Denver, he was not speaking to her at all. That fight in Sheridan WY, was the first incident that started the dissolution of the band. It was so bad, Wendy and Lisa quit the tour, but were somehow talked in to finishing it up. And of course the final Revolution show, is when Prince said it was over, by smashing 2 cloud guitars onstage.

I think it's safe to say, this is probably why he was sound checking without them. There is no such thing as a stretch armstrong-Melvoin thing. They have their memories and personal experiences that we will never know about let alone understand. They speak their truth, and somehow people either take it out of context, don't understand it or just call it a lie.

Like Prince said: that says more about you, than it does about them.

Nothing is contradicted here. They heard Prince play a new song he was writing, probably for the 4 millionth time. That's the whole story.

Sure we have a soundcheck of Raspberry Beret in 1982/3 where Prince is calling out the chord changes as the band are playing the song. Dude wrote a lot of songs. Sometimes he took pieces of music from other people (Jungle Love, Belle of St Mark, Mountains) and fleshed them out into full songs. How is any of this controversial??

I dunno why people get so defensive around W&L, but it's fascinating.

What I said was pretty straightforward and I'm not really sure why anyone would take offense to it. W&L etc have a hard time with remembering things obviously given their previous comments on their involvement in Prince's writing (see: Wonderful Ass liner notes). This isn't controversial, it's academic.

Anyway, moving on as requested. Cool story from Wendy that in no way contradicts anything anyone has ever said about that song. Just another piece of the puzzle. Anyone have any idea when Prince got his Fairlight? Those things were as expensive as a house at the time, no?

I have mad respect for the music of Wendy and Lisa but it's a bit ironic that on a song that does not feature her or the Revolution that this is mentioned.

I have no reason to believe she is lying but it does lead one to question the motive.

These type of stories just highlight what one post Revolution band member said to me in regards to attention whoring by members of the Revolution after Prince's death.
