Free Urself

This has become one of my fave songs from him from any decade. Another "should've been a hit" song imo. Totally catchy, and that ending! I really wish there was an extended version!!

Any other lovers of this wonderful tune?? What are others from this time period you want to give a shout to?

I like it and think of it almost as his parting message.

"I like to watch."

I love it as well. Really pure message, and the second half where he breaks it down, and it gets funky makes it for me. My kids age 4 and 7 love it too. I hope he had a finished album with this track in the vault.

I love that song so much, I will never tire of it. Just makes me so cheery, such bubblegum pop craft perfection. I wonder what the history of the song is, whether it was something had lying around for years or not. It really sounds like it came from a time-capsule from his golden era of hit-writing.

There's something about it I couldn never quite put me finger on. Maybe the lyrics "we need your help" and "save a place for me", I might be way off target but it felt unusual for Prince's lyrics to place himself down here on the "third apartment from the sun" with the rest of us fools. I dunno, I just liked it for that.

The journalist Iris Perez claims she witnessed him start to create it but of course it could be an older track from the vault.
.
Agree it’s a classic Prince track. Love to hear an extended version as it sounds like it could go on longer with the ‘free, free yourself’ female vocals.
.
That chant was great on the P&M tour as well

I love the first half of the song! I don't like the second half as much. It's the change in vibe that kills it for me. The first half is so whimsical and lively like 'Good Love'. The second half beat is too damn serious!

No one ever thought that "you've got to free yourself" is a contradiction in terms?

"You've got to" means "you must" and that doesn't sound very free. It reminds me of a joke by a Dutch comedian that you won't know (his name is Herman Finkers). He talked about taking his brother to a course to be more assertive.
The instructor said: "Never let anybody tell you what to do!"
I said: "We'll decide that for ourselves."

Ahh, thank you for the explanation.
But here are the lyrics:

"Free Urself"

How did we get here
How did we get this far?
How did we get so high
High enough to touch the stars?
If you could (if you could)
Wouldn't you like to fly?
Just because (just because)
Ain't no reason not to try

Free yourself (free yourself)
And save a place for me (yeah)
Life is what you make it
Be the best that you can be (oh yeah)
Now's the time (now's the time)
Take your place in history (yeah)
Yours and mine
The happy and the free (yeah)

Look at where we came from
How far we are today
We the people (we the people)
Will get the final say
Third apartment from the sun
Nothing left to fear
No need to hide or run
Heaven on earth right here
That's why you got to

Free yourself (free yourself)
And save a place for me (yeah)
Life is what you make it
Be the best that you can be (oh yeah)
Now's the time (now's the time)
Take your place in history (yeah)
Yours and mine
The happy and the free (yeah)

Love yourself
So we can love you too
We need your help
There's so much work to do
Love yourself
So we can love you too
We need your help

Free, free yourself
Free yourself
Free, free yourself
Free yourself
Free, free yourself
Free yourself
Free, free yourself
Free yourself

He only says "that's why you got to" and I guess I saw that more as "these are the reasons why", a way to encourage someone to want to free themselves, not him saying "you've got to free yourself", so I wasn't seeing the contradiction.

"Free Urself" is, essentially, the last "new" Prince single ever. I think it's incredibly fitting, funky, and fun.

I admit that I haven't heard the song in a long time and that was the part I remembered. But still, when I read these lyrics... Save a place for me... Take your place in history... Be the best that you can be... Yes, I see the idea of becoming a better person, improving yourself, all very fine, but it seems like a burden, not freedom. As George Clinton said: "freedom is free of the need to be free."

Great song. Far better than anything that appeared on any of his last few albums.

I absolutely adore this song. It's a wonderful mix of whimsy and poignance, playfulness and hefty funk. It is a very appropriate swansong, too. It's my favorite Prince song of the 2010s, and a contender for a top 10 Prince song ever for me.

Fun story about this song, at least for me:

Prince had released the song for Purple Pick of the Week, and later asked fans on twitter if they wanted t-shirts with images related to the song. I sent him a tweet and asked him if he could make the song available for download, telling him that 7 days was not long enough with that song. He retweeted me and later, in true Prince fashion, went back and deleted it. Then he tweeted "Ask and ye shall receive" with a link to be able to purchase the t-shirts. I was a little disappointed that the song wasn't included, but then later he tweeted a 2nd tweet, "Btw.... smile" with a link to purchase the song. I don't know if he did because of my asking him to release the song, but I'm running with it. So... you're welcome??? lol

Cool! And thank you, it was because of u - I’m certain. Do you remember at that time some mocked up artwork for a free urself album? The artwork was one of Blule’s portraits. If I Could Get Ur Attention would have fit well with it. He may have deleted those tweets - and I’m not good enough at twitter to go looking!

I Loved this song on first listen, and was there to hear Prince's last song. So for me it's bittersweet. At first it gave me hope and encouragement and a feeling of everything is going to be alright. Then in an instant he was gone and how can i ever be free when all of me belongs to P yes Musical Emotion heart

Honestly its one of his best songs ever. And its a short pop song.

I hope, with the releases we’re getting, that we get more of an insight into the story behind this song and what inspired him. I consider it his last song; and what a song to go out on!

I don’t wanna be ‘that guy’ but i could hear an 85 or 86 early version of this track. Maybe even just an instrumental and then years later in 2015 he listened to it and added lyrics. Maybe not. But it does kinda remind me of his classic pop arrangements and his Dream Factory sound.

In ‘A Place In Heaven,’ there’s a similar line thats in Free Urself: “life’s what you make it, stop whining baby, its all up to you and me”

And in Free Urself there’s the line “Heaven-on-Earth right here!”

Never listened to this song until I read these comments - yes it's a great song. Didn't realise it was his last officially released single - something very fitting about this. Also it does sound to me like maybe an old song he has revisited - the keyboard refrain, the arrangement all remind me of his mid '80's writing.
