OUT NOW: "Witness 4 The Prosecution (Version 1)"

Bass guitar and kick drum sound amazing. Snare drum is awesome. Stoked to say the least.

In what fucking universe is the considered as "Version 1"?

I guess it at least it appears to be the original mix (being Wendy & Lisa's version).

I guess they're disregarding the various mixes with/without overdubs, and labeling this as Version 1 since it's distinctively different from Prince's later re-recording?

This doesn't seem like a particularly well-recorded song, must be one of the songs that Prince rushed through without regards to fidelity. The vocals seem to have some slapback delay which doesn't help (didn't he also do this on "Dream Factory"?)

I was hoping the officially released version would sound significantly cleaner than the bootleg, but it is what it is smile

A definite improvement to my ears, I like it. I always fear they'll release something half-done like they did with Dance Electric so I ain't complaining!

So cool that this will be an official physical single released before the Deluxe set... as part of the 7" vinyl box.

That comes out August 14th, so about a month and a half before - like a real album campaign back in the day!

Now we just need a limited picture disc single lol!

It sounds a little slower and I love it! Almost makes the groove sound even nastier. The way he locks in the bass and drums is just sick.

Just because you heard a clearly unfinished version of this song doesn't mean it isn't version 1. It's been common knowledge that this was the DF version to be released for eons.

You’re thinking with bootleg logic. The version without horns and only his vocals is not finished just like old friends 4 sell #1 is not the finished version. Like Prince said, that’s the problem with boots.

Thx for the reply, makes sense. It sounds unusual, but a little less with each play. The song, musically, is amazing. I also expected cleaner versions of bootlegs, but hey, aint complainin if we get Wally, Cosmic Day & IALRWNL!

As long as "Large Room" is in good quality, I'll be happy! It would be heartbreaking if they put some low-quality cassette rip on this set because they couldn't find mulitracks or a better mixdown lol

Facts, that song's always been muddy (the version I have which I think's the main circulating one). Really hope they do it justice.
Im also really hoping there's a longer version of Cosmic Day

Edit: one outtake that sounds perfect in its muddy quality, imo, is "101". The murkiness just adds to the haunting creepiness of that track

1) How are we to know which is the true ‘version 1’based off bootlegs? 99% of the boots are unfinished, duh. I bet they tried all kinds of mixes, doesn’t mean that they have hundreds of different versions for every mix they laid down. The only people who know for sure are Susan Rogers and whoever is behind this particular mix.

2) his vocal sounds weird but to be fair at this time he was playing with his vocals, intentionally making them sound weird or whatever. We all know that, so don’t get mad at whoever mixed this. They did a great job

It sounds great. Can’t wait for the rest

I was hoping the muddy sound was a boot transfer issue, but it's here, so I'm not expecting a huge sonic difference on some of the other tracks.

Unfortunately, it seems the final mix down that is used as reference isn't sonically the best. A great example is How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore. From a sound point of view, take 1 blows the remastered released version out of the water. But to be 'faithful' to the original release, they didn't try or did not have the source to clean it up.

Guys gotta calm down. The mix will never be perfect. Sometimes he recorded tracks on broken consoles. Audio quality will always be a bit inconsistent, especially in certain periods of time. Just need to accept this.

Just played “Last Heart” from the 1998 Crystal Ball set back to back with Witness, and the audio levels are lower (better) on Witness. Which is good, but when I’m making my make-shift Dream Factory playlist (a boy can dream) I’ll just lower the levels until they’ll remaster those tracks (hopefully... perhaps they will release Dream Factory, Crystal Ball, etc... if I were them I’d double-dip, triple-dip too lol)

It is the effect Prince put on his vocals on this track. He doubled them (digitally duplicated the track), and slightly offset one of them. Then hard panned the vocals to the left and right channels so you hear the vocals from the edges rather than the phantom center of the stereo image

I get why he never would have even considered releasing this at the time, as he was leaving the revolution and those off-kilter wendy and lisa backing vocals behind, but damn this would have been a fire b-side.
