He played quite a few emancipation tracks and then said I better not play anymore from Emancipation otherwise people are going to think I like that album.

I loved how he referred to the Fresh dance mix of Pop Life to the Lemon Cake mix, while playing the superior Extended mix.

Great Sets so far.

I agree, great sets so far - although, and this is just a question - I've absolutely loved what Questlove has been doing - did you all think yesterday's set was really that deep a dig into Prince's weird and wonderful music, as indicated it was to be? It still felt all familiar to me...being the target audience, that is. AND, second question - has he played any NPG songs yet, did I miss any? I felt certain yesterday was going to include The One, Come On, The Exodus Has Begun etc...he didn't play any of that on the first night, either, did he?

*

Anyhoo, just questions for thoughts, as I say. Can't wait for tonight's "live stuff" set.

Ok, this set really Showcase Prince as a genius for real. And one big reason is that the "new tracks" from 1999 Super Deluxe is so well mixed together with the music that it almost sounds it's been in his regular Cannon for 40+ years. Imagine, we just gained access to these tracks 5-6 months ago and they sound as natural as Lady Can Driver, Automatic, Controversy etc etc. That is the testament of his brilliance. Goddamn, Rearrange, Bold Generations, Possessed sounded good in this set.

And The Future flowed sooooo good in this set. Thank you Questlove for teaching new fans!

Thankfully I listened to it all before it was blocked. That is a real shame. What harm would it do letting people enjoy these shows. If anything it's promtion.

29.12. He plays Plectrumelectrum and says, "and this should once and for all prove to Orgers that I do like Prince after 1988. Mehhh (smirks)."

And we said that because of this article where he didn't really have anything nice to say about Prince music after 1987. Don't act like it's a baseless claim, Quest. I was happy to hear more recent stuff in the mix, though.

Nope, he didn't follow that, but it didn't matter. He played some extendeds a lot of people haven't heard or that weren't circulating as much recently, and it was a grab bag mix that doesn't work on paper and nobody would do normally.

For me it's interesting how many of the extras he wove in so they sounded like real Prince songs. He found the sections that made them sound complete, like they belonged next to the Computer Blue "workout" version, or with the hits, or whatever.

He's not always a technically skilled dj, but a set where you can make people hear a song in a whole new light is real party rocking. He really showcased some of the weak material in its best light.

No - you're right - it didn't matter. I still thoroughly enjoyed last night, as all the nights so far. It just struck me as curious that having said he was going to go deep that he didn't really. I'm wondering about the audience, too - who is this for? Perhaps, when I said I was the intended audience, i.e. a fan whose still keen to listen to something like this sort of commemoration after four years - am I the audience, or is this for someone new to Prince? I dunno...just musing. What you've written is spot on, it was an absolute blast. Looking forward to the last night.

Okay, I'm trying. But I have trouble listening to this when he keeps talking over the music.

Maybe if he mixed his voice into the music the commentary would be cool. But the way he keeps stopping the music to talk, stop/start, stop/start, so annoying.

I do like some of the story telling though, so that's cool.

I also thought he could’ve gone deeper yesterday and was surprised that he didn’t. Overall, though, I thoroughly enjoyed the last 3 days of music. I’ve even listened to it on replay! I’m so thankful to Questlove for dedicating his time to this; now this is a tribute! I hope this will become a tradition. He said next year’s will last a week. Can’t wait til tonight!

I felt like he could have put some compression/mixed his voice louder too if he was going to do that. I had to keep toggling the volume to hear what he saying when he did that, then rush the toggle back down before it blasted when he re-started.

It's because he really does not prefer Prince music after 1988 (the org sees you Quest!), so for him notable album cuts on AOA are the epitome of obscuro.

He's done it many times. I've never read this article, but I've seen some tweets posted here before where he said specifically he thinks Prince fell off after '88. He's a passionate dude about taste and I'm sure he's using music nerd hyperbole to an extent, but, yeah, like you said, it's hardly a baseless claim, we're just paying attention is all.

"Dearly Quest, we're gathered here today to get through this thing called a DJ set of more than 5 hours ?!"

smile)))))))

Seriously.

I'm thrilled and humble.

QuestLove is a mega beast, and thàt's even an understatement.

-

SEEEEELECTOR !

-

What is it about ?Love that he doesn't know about Prince ?! Wow.

Got up in the middle of the night (Brussels time) to listen to this.

-

He even got Wendy, Lisa, Susannah and other members up and listening to his DJ set apparently... commenting to them.

-

After 5h & 14m (mostly) Prince & The Revolution (& The Band) Live material,

One can honestly say, that Prince's live acts from the 80's are not be compared with his later live stuff & bands.

He was young, wild, hungry, experimenting, challenging, daring, fucking-it-up-in-a-good-way,

very funny most of the time it seems, exhausting / exhaustive, tireless, thouroughly, jinxed, possessed, devilish playful, and most of all 'light'. Never a heavy feeling with Prince live.

-

There are even snippets of him and Jamie Shoop on drums and Vanity (Denise on a one keyboard note), the three of 'm funking it up... too crazy.

Not to forget the extraordinary comments and insights of QuestLove, detaisl;

he tells you who is on the bass, "that must be lisa", or whomever...

Also quite a musicology to how instruments are being played by whom etc...

-

"Gimme 12O... no i'm kidding". Thàt much fun Prince had live with his 1986 tour band. smile

Not to forget the countless pieces of rehearsals he threw in here and there.

Loads of stuff I haven't even heard about.

-

THIS is something i'm going to listen to over and over.

Quest ? How do you do all that ? Wonderful and inimitable.

BEST QUANRENTINE EVER ! wink
