In hyndsight I really like a lot of the songs on Emancipation - have no issue with the production. Didn't love the album at the time cause I had sort of lost touch with Prince after Symbol. What I do LOVE though is the early version of Emancipation Prince gave one of his art directors - that is a dope set of early Emancipation tracks that ALL rock.

I would have been interested, years ago, to hear the original before Mayte got pregnant and the whole albulm became padded and a means for him to justify and convince himself and the public of the path he chose to go down.

What does this even mean?

It means the whole "love story" wasn't believable then, and it sure ain't believable now. It seemed forced, fake and dishonest. The albulm was supposed to be about his Emancipation from Corporate Media instead it got diluted and turned into a publicity campaign about something else. He became famous so young I don't know if he knew how to process things outside of or seperate from work or his public image.

It totally altered the album and I felt he was trying to convince himself and the public he was now a family man who'd found the love of his life-which was totally unbelievable and very sad. I'm not saying some of the songs aren't beautiful but I never believed them in the context of the Mayte soulmate routine/fantasy for one second unless he was singing to someone else we don't know about (which is very possible given he was never faithful to her/anyone as far as we know). I don't think he was in a good space at all and was making poor decisions, he looked shell shocked and unhappy. Take a look at the Oprah interview, or even the decision to do that; clearly deep trauma and cognitive dissodance. I'm sure the edit on the albulm in Dec/early January was totally different than it was by Feb., and I would guess not for the better.

Interesting take, if a little cynical. I don't really see any evidence to suggest that Prince wasn't sincere when he wrote those songs for Mayte at the time. Newly weds expecting their first child is a hugely exciting time in anyones life, and it's a little unfair to use the fallout after it all went tragically wrong against Prince. Yes, the decision to do Oprah at that time was odd and what he said and made Mayte say was even stranger, but there's no right way to grieve.

I'm curious to know why you think it was all an act on Prince's part? I do wonder how differently things would've panned out with him and Mayte if their son had survived.

Personally, I think Prince had been acting for years (meaning I never bought the sex god routine for a second-i always thought he was oringinally before he was corrupted probably a shy sweet introverted boy who got marketed), and because of the pregnancy (and actual reality that he couldnt then control intruding on the act) he chose to go the route he did. All you have to do is read the lyrics to the songs he wrote for the pregnancy/marriage versus reality and his actions (even the limited ones we know). Also, all the interviews he did on the subject; before, during and after; in other words actual reality not the fantasy he was sellng but the actual behavior/actions. It is cognitive dissonance when a person's actions do not match their words. Most people are hypocrites to some degree but throw fame/celebrity/money on top of that and the types of people and parasites it draws and it makes it even more unhealthy. I think fame must be absolutely horrible.

I don't think doing "what if's" is fruitful or useful, but, considering he was already clearly screwing around by 1998 with others, i somehow doubt the marriage would have lasted even if mayte could have ever had a healthy child. Although, I have know women like her who will literally put up with anything providing the guy has enough money, so who knows. He was almost twice her age when they met when she was a teen, statistically odds were not in their favor. Neither was the fact he was having sex with other women when Mayte got with him and right up until the marriage, or the power imbalance, intellectual divide, talent disparity, or other social markers that would indicate compatability or long term happiness. Unfotunely, when you truly love someone, I think, you love them forever and it can't be turned off like a tap....and Prince clearly had a lot of superficial taps runnin', you might say his pipes were bursting and he needed just to rooto-root himself...sorry its been a very trying and difficult last few days. All of his actions since the divorce just show how "deep" the love really was, Mayte's antics and actions are clear as daylight. There is nothing I've seen that indicates real love to me.

So the topic starter finds himself at one of Prince's aftershows where the man is jamming away on whatever song, deeply into it.

Will topic starter start jelling 'NEXT!!!!1!!!!!' (after two minutes) or will topic starter go to the bar to get another beer?

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

I have and had my reasons for not `drinking` during aftershows.
