Yes, the whole show was on rails aside from her guitar and vocals. I've found her disappointing live before because she's not the most instinctive of performers so having it very planned out made for a great show. I haven't watched this performance and have no real desire to so won't comment on it.
I'm sure he does, St. Vincent should hire him for her live act, he'd make a good counterpoint to her. [Edited 4/22/20 7:28am]

Bravo! đ
I loved all of it. Gotta hand it to Sheila E as the music director she nailed it. However seeing her pop up on many of the performances gave me a lemon cake đ° kinda sour in my mouth! Yes to more Revolution they killed it! Foos fun and awesome performance Beck sounded excellent and after seeing this song performed live and the paisley show this was by far the best version yet Gary Clarke wowzers spot on cover with so many P touches it was surreal Mavis with the Revolution was incredible and Wendy OMG perfection The best tribute show for P ever!!! [Edited 4/22/20 7:46am] The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

This comment is kind of ridiculous. Esp if you are going to contrast it to Beck's performance. . . He literally stood there and strummed an acoustic guitar while SHEILA's BACKING band played the song. . . He looked like David Spade in a beige Prince suit, which was kind of cute, but how you are going to say that actually added something to the performance vs. Wendy makes no sense. . . I do agree that the Revolution seemed a little flat compared to when I've seen them in person, but Wendy actually did much better on the guitar solos this time, probably on purpose. . . And Sheila doesn't copy Prince, she actually changes the arrangements, using nods to the classic concerts but adds her own extra, more jazzy elements to them with additional passing chords and subtle things. . . The Time of course is going to do the classic arragnements given this is the original 7 who amost never are together anymore. And they have always performed without Prince, so even though he trained them, even he was "scared" of them live as is well documented.

I watched the tribute with my mother. She watched the whole thing with me. She had many questions But the funniest to me. She asked me was that guitar player a man or a women. It was Wendy. Again my issues with the show were minimal but knowing what got CUT and what could have gotten CUT again leaves me with an odd feeling especially when Shelia is on stage for everything it seemed. Again I think she did good with crafting the show, it was lined up like it was a Prince concert, beginning slow jams and ending. The issues I had were some weaker performances that just fell flat I felt, 1999 I thought was a dud, I liked Gary Clark always have but I wonder why Lenny K was not there, my only complaint about the CROSS was shelia, and she was the original drummer but this song didnt have the feel it always did because i feel it was tossed in and widdled down, I felt Sign O the times was interesting to do but also fell flat to me. I feel also Miguel or Usher or John Legend, these 3 almost seemd to blend into one, its hard to listen to listen to John do Nothin Compares it was better than I thought but I have seen Paul Peterson tear that thing up without doing that vocal show boating John did at the end, thats where he lost me. Miguel was OK but the Usher performance plopped in the middle as an old film clip from two months prior, I was like Once was enough. The Revolution did fine, I got nervous at first with Mavis because I thought she was going to start rearranging words in Purple Rain, I am glad they did all the verses and Wendy got the solo in I feared it would be cut for some reason. I still feel skipping over the NPG like it never happened was either a decision of Shelia or CBS but not even something from Diamonds and Pearls or even Most beautfiul Girl something could have been done, i get it it was NOT prince's more popular era and also it seems this is the era where PRINCE and the musical director of this show did not speak, so i was not surprised to hear that was not happening. But overall if I was grading this would be a B+ and thats really because of some stronger performances from Earth Wind, Gary Clark, Revolution, Mavis, Susannah Hoffs, Foo Fighters giving the show some rock, and flashes here and there. I liked it overall, but yes, it was the Sheila show for sure. I was thinking of Apples fb rant through the whole thing. But she DID sound good and knows how to throw it down!
The Revolution should've been backing Beck for RB and they should've shown them performing Mountains. Did anyone see the clip I think Susannah Melvoin tweeted? It looked like it was awesome. Also I know Sheila covered it, but her America was terrible imo. Why not Love Bizarre & America WITH the Revolution instead? We all know The Rev tear those up! St Paul & Susannah should've done NC2U. Would've also liked to see more former associates...and the NPG! Sonny, Tommy, Morris H, and Michael B at least! I am starting to think at least some of Apples rant may be true.
I loved the Time...would've liked to see them doing a few other songs beyond the JL and the Bird since most of the original line up were up there.
Foo Fighters rocked it.
Finally, is Jimmy Jam's health ok, does anyone know? He has lost a LOT of weight.

Iâm shocked they cut FF doing Pop life. I was at the taping. Darling Nikki was shot because Dave on the mic said that Ken Ehrlich (legendary tv producer) told him they canât leave without Darling Nikki...so it was an afterthought. Pop life was my fav performance of the night...maybe because I wasnât expecting it and...it turned pretty good? At the taping, Sheila was getting on the audience towards the end for standing up but not really grooving (it was a 3 plus hour show with some songs re-shot) Idk what she was expecting but she kinda looked fed up. And i also agree it was a Sheila show. Jimmy and Terry were MDâs along with the Sheila and they were only on stage when The Time was performing. Sure! A lot of Sheila E.'s reputation falls under the Prince umbrella just like most of his associates. Throw a name out there and we'll automatically respond 'Prince" But so what? What's wrong about Sheila E. or anybody else being known for Prince? Let's also acknowledge that she put on a heck of show last night and deserves credit for it. She nailed it with powerful musical talent. I love her! This is my normal life. These marital standards cannot be recreated with money.
