While there are some merits to some of her points, there is room for all types of tributes. Why don't all the sour grapers organize and put on their own tribute. As much as I agree that it seems that Sheila has gone overboard with her self-promotion, she did help organize a successful show that was more liked by the orgers per posts than the almost universal condemnation of the some of the other major tribute shows. Also, she show got good rating and it created a spike in Prince related downlods (the best of, Purple Rain, and The Hits all charted follwoing the show).
The type she is talking about - only Prince associates playing the deep cuts rather than the hits - sounds great for Pasiley Park with the possibility of a live stream. I guarantee that no major network would air it and it would just be for his devout fans. No problem with that. But as Prince said, 'shut up already, damn" and "stand up and organize". |

And you think Sheila is responsible for that? Bwahahahahaha. Those artists got involved because the Grammy people organized this, same for CBS etc. CBS and the Grammys promoted the shit out of it. And it basically got good ratings because it's not like there's much else on TV. As for sales figures, the same happened for similar things in the past: I know it sounds crazy but when people get exposed to these kind of things, they tend to buy the thing they're exposed to. (Which is why plenty of fans have said over and over that it was dumb as fuck by Prince to not promote himself or even worse to actively sabotage this by for instance removing his music from popular platforms.) © Bart Van Hemelen

Thanks for reiterating my point! Bwwahahahahaha. A show with just deep cuts without hardly any stars would not have been on a major network, would not have had an audiance, and would not have had a sales spike. And if you don't think Sheila didn't have a role in organizing it, then it must have been all the others artists who insisted that she be featured in their sets. She just politely agreed to go along with the plan , [Edited 4/25/20 7:26am] |

Sheila does not annoy me the way she does many here. She was ubiquitous, but she kept the pace/energy right in the numbers without any old timers. The show would not have been as good w/out her. "if you can't clap on the one, then don't clap at all" |

Sounds like sour grapes that she wasn't invited
there are a lot of inconsistencies with how this event was even put together and honestly why now, it's four years? Not five not ten a more relevant number. This was done just to really show case and there was an open spot to do it, it was a throw together you had all these people around from the Grammies so that's why you had a lot of who you had. It's always going to speculation as to who was asked and who was bumped and who was in control of that. There were huge omissions like the NPG not even being there and Morris H being in a house band unseen doesn't cut it. NPG bridged that gap of his hey day and his resurgence in the world, no NPG and that outlet and Prince is not the same. The story that the Revolution was not asked, I don't know, I wouldn't be surprised, that camp does not mix with the other, and to be honest if this show had no revolution and already had no NPG it would be basically no one, yes Shelia did fine with MD and she knows what prince liked and how he would do it, from being there, but so do others not just her.

Loved it.
So good to see so many of the arrangements mirror Prince’s own live versions rather than just a cover of the album versions. Sheila did a great job at that and it made it feel like a real tribute. Conversely it was nice to see NC2U being Prince’s studio version as opposed to Sinead’s which always annoys me on tributes.
Would have been nice to have more Revolution and would have loved to see Janelle Monae there. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it! |

Actually, no, no one else does. I've seen the Revolution w/o Prince sevearl times, I've seen the other Prince tributes the year he died on the award shows, Justin TImberlake's tribute, etc.
.
.
None of them replicate the same "classic live Prince" feel without him except Sheila.
.
DISCLAIMER: I didn't see the NPG w/o Prince but I never liked that era of his live performances anyway so even they did recreate that feel, I wouldn't care.
.
The Time is able to re-create the original Time live feel though.

.And the Family/F Deluxe were pretty close when they were doing the classic Family stuff but then again, they only had 1 reference performance from 1984 anyway |

The Recording Academy’s tribute to Prince earned stellar ratings when it debuted this past Tuesday. And as a result, the program, entitled Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince, will re-air on CBS this Saturday.
Fans will have the opportunity to enjoy the special event at 8 PM in the east and 5 PM in the west on the evening of Saturday, April 25th. CBS proper, as well as the channel’s on-demand streaming service, CBS All Access, will show the two-hour-long program once again.
Nearly 6.5 million fans tuned into Let’s Go Crazy on Tuesday, April 21st, which marked the fourth anniversary of Prince’s passing. (The Recording Academy and the involved artists filmed the special before the coronavirus crisis’s domestic onset.) The all-time-great musician would have turned 62 this year.

The better part of 30 years?? She did Baby I'm A Star during the PR tour, then SOTT and LoveSexy. So mainly '87-'89. Unless I'm mistaken, she did not play with him on stage at all during the 90's. Then he brought her in for some of the ONA shows, and then some of the Welcome 2 shows. He had her on stage for the BET awards too. It was not a steady 30 years by any stretch.
*
Wendy and Lisa were around off and on through the last 30 years as well - '88 LoveSexy in MN, 2004 on Tavis Smiley, 2006 Brit awards - both Wendy and Lisa, 2007 for the MN concert. |

From 84-89 pretty much non stop:
- Opened for him on PR Tour, plus came back agin for the 20-30 minute encores including the Grammy performance in 85 and the official video to Baby I'm A Star including him verbally calling her out
- Some studio credits on ATWIAD and Parade
- Drummer and possibly MD on SOTT and Lovesexy Tours
- Black album music originally created for Sheila's b-day party
90s I don't remember them together that much so; maybe someone else knows more (I wasn't into the 90s era Prince)
Then throughout the 2000s-2011
- Live at Aladdin 2003
- Key Musicology dates 2004 (NYC, SF for sure)
- NAACP awards 2005
- Brit awareds 2006
- Alma Awards 2007
- W2A Tour 2010-2011 key dates until they got into the disagreement in 2011 about him cancelling the E family for Larry G at the last minute with no reimbursement
.

So yeah, while the 90s was probaby quiet, between 84 and 2011 she was the single most highlighted/featured collaborator and the only one he would put right next to him front and center |

I agree with her thinking and sentiments here. Prince's career involved many more fantastic musicians - not just Sheila E, and they should have had the opportunity to play his music again for the masses. Sheila had herself and her backing band on the stage for the majority of the show. It seems very believeable that The Revolution - Prince's most successful band - did have to push to be included in the show. I still can't believe they cut Mountains. It was such a great performance. Instead we got the "same old same old" hits , and several were really off the mark.
*
Andre, Dez, Eric Leeds, Michael B, Tommy, Sonny T, Morris H, Rhonda, Larry G.....all of the musicians who Prince personally chose to back him through the years should have been invited and used as backing for the songs. They know all of his music, and could have easily jumped in to play. Jill Jones, Susannah, Rosie Gaines, Shelby, Elisa....could have done backing vocals on certain songs. There would have been a way to include most of Prince's former musicians.

the four times I have seen the revolution I have not had an impression that they could not pull things off and they far did the purple Rain era stuff better which is why I question them doing mountains bad choice in my opinion since they kill computer blue you could run that into the foo fighters and give the show a different dynamic, Mountiains though I love it it didn't seem like the audience was big on that choice. As for the NPG saw them twice and not a fan of tony M but as a band they were super tight and vocals by Mackenzie so far he's been the best doing prince stuff other than prince far better than John legend miguel or usher to me those were more like imitations and lacked soul. I don't count Justin Timberlake or Bruno Mars etc...those were just laughable . The time always had their own identity which is why prince was jealous and the family, Paul Peterson still does Nothin Comapres better than anyone, I prefer Paul over prince and Rosie Gaines never was a fan of that duet,

Wendy was front and center too whenever she played with him through the years. Sheila wasn't his drummer duirng the 2000's, so of course she's going to be closer to him on the stage when playiing percussion. My point is that he brought other musicians back as well through the years. Eric Leeds is another one. There were key people missing for this show. |

They could've broken it up into several albums representing each era and the bands that played with him, something like 78-79, then 80-83, 84-86, and 87-90 and so on. Start the show by playing Prince version of For You then do IWBYL, Soft and Wet, and WYWTMSB. Intersperse filmed segments of band members and associates telling stories about Prince some poignant and some funny instead of the basic biography we got. And bring in the heavy hitters to sing and play like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle and mix them in with the younger acts. They could call it For You: The Musical Journey of Prince. There would have been a way to include most of Prince's former musicians.

Sorry, but it was pretty much the "Sheila E and her band" show.

Nice idea. I like it. Someone posted somewhere - here or somewhere else - that a "4 year" anniversary show was odd, and I agree. Your idea for the 5 year anniversary woould have been better, and more time to plan and organize it. |

Guys why the nit picking.
The tribute was great. All the artists performed well.
H.E.R. was impressive. John Legend was great as usual. The Time were great. Usher was good. St. Vincent was looking hot. Beck was great. Foo were good as well. The whole tribute was done well.
Many of the posts on these forums are negative. I mean just look at the start of this thread. People saying they are not going to watch it and saying its crap. But we all know those same people will be the first to watch the tribute.
Nobody can play/perform those songs like Prince did. We all know that. Hell even the artists featured know that. Everyone was trying to play the song the best they could and to entertain and pay tribute to Prince.
Beck is a very talanted artist. And he did a good job with RB...If he came out and did somersaults and rap a bit and change the song up many of you would say he spoilt the song. He did a good job with RB and he is a great artist.
I watched the tribute with my parents who like prince but are only fans because im obsessed with Prince. They sat down and enjoyed it from start to finish. They loved all the performances and they even were a bit emotiional when the Prince clips came on.
In that aspect the tribute was a success...the audience around the world wont be mega huge prince nerds like us on here so with that in mind the tribute was good.
And now St. Vincent. She is an amazing guitarist. She did a good job on Controversy. Check out her videos on the net her guitaring is great. She was actually the highlight of the show IMO. Sexy, those legs...those boots...and yea ill just leave it at that...
I think some people on here if they dont get what they want in a show they tend to critise it.
In general I agree with this. Although none of them (except The Time) could really rival Prince it was a fun event and I enjoyed almost all of the performances for what they are. I am just happy a tribute like this was organised in honour of Prince. And people seemed to like it as it was rated high by the general public. Of course I would have liked to see some things different and missed some of the key figures from Prince's past, but you can't have it all... RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time... |
