Was anyone at the event last night? Any reviews if you were there?

Regarding keeping Prince's legacy and music alive for the younger generations.....instead of musicians/singers with a similar style who try to mimic Prince's voice and dance moves (which is really impossible, because there's only one Prince), we need musicians with varying musical style to cover Prince's songs. I think this is what will keep his music fresh, and also attract young new listeners who will become curious and seek out his original recordings. *
Here are links to two great examples of musicians covering Prince in their own style while still holding on to the essence of his original recording:* Low Cut Connie covering Controversy - a great version of the song: *

*
Chris Cornell (another great one gone too soon) covering NC2U: *

* ^^^^^^ We need more of these

Someone on twitter said that Foo Fighters also did "Pop Life", which is a pleasant surprise

Yes Foo fighters did Pop Life and it was actually pretty dope. Darling Nikki was great as well. To be honest, Foo Fighters was my fav performance of the night. They brought the most energy i feel. Also loved just the piano version of manic monday. Felt intimate. The Cross by Gary Clark Jr was also amazing. For me it felt like an OK tribute. Aside from above performances were mediocre. Philip bailey forgot parts of Adore and it was painful to watch as he was improvising. As the night went on people start leaving even before the revolution came out. Sheila was getting on the audience for not standing up and dancing during a prince tribute...in a joking but also not joking way. The night felt like it was dying so I think she noticed. I also get she was the MD but she was on stage a whole lot either drumming or vox. Jimmy and Terry were MD's too right? They were only on stage during The Time. But it was actually dope to see The Time and Revolution on stage together. I was kinda hoping for a food fight part 2 ππππ
John Legend: NC2U The Time (minus Jesse): Bird, Cool, Jungle love Mavis Staples (with the Revolution): Purple Rain Earth Wind, Fire: Adore Juanes: 1999 Princess (with the Revolution): Delirious Miguel: I would die 4 u Susanna hoffs/chris martin: manic monday (just piano) Sheila: America. SOTT (with Common rappin...felt weird). Glamourous life. A bit of love bizarre too I think. The revolution: Mountains beck: raspberry beret st. Vincent: controversy Encore (everyone who performed): baby i'm a star
i think that's the list I might be forgetting some.

St. Vincent did Controversy??? I am so glad she picked that one! Was her backing band with her or did she just play with other musicians who were already there?

Had a blast last night. A great tribute to Prince. I choked up a bit when they announced they were showing it on 4/21, the 4th anniversary of his death. Next door, at Staples Center grounds there were hundreds of people gathered on an ever expanding makeshift memorial for Kobe Bryant. So I went in the Grammy tribute already feeling emotional. I want to thank all the artists who performed- such a great lineup of artists Iβve never seen perform live. My faves (The Revolution, The Time, Foo Fighters, Beck and John Legend)β and especially for Sheila E. who performed numerous numbers as well as serving as musical director. Love that she stayed after the show for pictures and shook hands with fans. There was definitely a lot of work involved in putting this together especially having to reset the stage for each act. Love the music videos of Prince shown after every segment as they reset. It was a long show and I wonder how much of it will actually be in the telecast. A fitting tribute for Prince and shows how much he is loved and admired by other musicians. Highlight for me, of course, was The Revolution and The Time as I never seen them performed live before. Also touched by Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen sharing their admiration for Prince. Great meeting loveandkindness in person and other Prince fans there. Show went too longβ 3+ hours?β some had to leave (itβs a week night after al) but plenty of diehards left and were asked to move closer to the stage as The Revolution performed with the others in the finale. Looking forward to the telecast on 4/21. "I want to be the only one you come for...."

Thanks to darlingnikki and AZstreet for the details on the show. Iβm surprised that they did not have The Revolution play on America, as it was such a big song for them in β86. Iβm looking forward to seeing/hearing Beck and Foo Fighters do their covers.

Thanks for posting that list.... I'm surprised, this is the first tribute where they mostly nailed it from song choices, on paper at least.
Honestly though, based on the list, this could be the best of the tributes they've done yet.
