Would have loved for D'Angelo and Janelle to be part of it.

Trying to cop tix since yesterday in the resale area. Cheapest there is now as I look is $350 plus $80 resale fee. SMH.

And you have to buy in blocks of two. SMH

I really wish Jill Jones was part of this. This woman was around nearly the entire 80s decade even longer than Sheila E. She lent her voice on 1999, PR, some AWIAD unreleases, SOTT and plus the associates around that time. confused Nevertheless I am still looking forward to this. I would thought they might do something like this next year since it would be five years since Prince departure.

Bilal KILT The Beautiful Ones (i think it was BET tributes). Would have loved to see him.

Gotta admit though...Chris Martin on this is throwing me off but we'll see. Maybe it's just supporting vox and not lead.

THey should add Stevie Nicks (she can sing "Stand Back", where she says Prince helped her out on that song) and Celine Dion (but only have her sing "With This Tear")

So out of 27 posts 10 (so far) are negative. Would those 10 posters prefer that we just forget about Prince and the music? He's gone, folks, he's never coming back to give us new music or drop in at the Grammy's to give an award or go on tour again. So how would you like to keep his memory and IMPACT on the world alive? Prince has been gone 4 years this April so this isn't even a 5th year anniversary and he's getting a tribute concert that will be filmed and aired on television. Quit your whining about who's playing/singing/dancing and just freaking enjoy the fact that he HASN'T BEEN FORGOTTEN yet!!! Be HAPPY about that.

I'm fine with Prince being forgotten tbh, I know how good he was, and you know how good he was, and his legacy isn't going to go increase at this point unless someone stumbles onto an ABBA Gold release or a film media event like Bohemian Rhapsody.

I would prefer all star Grammy Tributes didn't happen but I'm not going to do anything to stop it so what's the issue? If all the old folks who thinks a Grammy means anything in 2020 enjoy it then good for them, maybe they should check out some of the music by some of living artists who are still doing good stuff. shrug

Give me some names of living artists that aren't using autotune for their 'voices'. When I listen to the radio (which is pretty much never anymore as I can't stand the commercials and I'm not paying for Sirius, etc) pretty much every song has been autotuned. Sure I know some singers like Janelle Monae, Shawn Mendes and a couple of others don't use the 'Box', but most do. It's not 'real' at all. So you're fine with Prince being forgotten? Okay, then in two years don't come on here complaining that there's no Prince music around. I don't want his music to be forgotten. He was the most amazing artist this planet has seen and I would like the world to know that.

He has made shittier music than any of these artists at some point during his career so they are not beneath him...

I bet you are one of those who thought Timberlake insulted Prince with his superbowl tribute....that arrogant holier than thou attitude is exhibit A of why Prince has fewer listens on Spotify than Madonna MJ and yes...Phil Collins...and is likely to be forgotten far sooner than any of them by the public.....but that's ok because he is more talented...it's a fair price to pay to have only real musicians appreciate him....everyone else can fuck off

It is so fucked up logic it's almost tragically comic...but sadly Prince fomented this attitude himself...when the slave era started his obsession with control over his music and exceptionalism over his art completely overrode his interest in being heard by the masses (though he did try with Rave), kept his music from the internet and the charts and now he is less listened to than several of his peers...but sure...real musicians still appreciate him..

Prince having fewer listens on Spotify is a much more complex issue. I'm guessing Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Miles Davis, Sly Stone, and George Clinton have 'fewer listens' on Spotify than Madonna, MJ and Phil Collins also? What about David Bowie? Paul McCartney? Joni Mitchell?

Would you consider John Legend suitable at a Jimi Hendrix tribute? Or Kenny G at a tribute for Miles Davis, in an attempt to ensure the music of Miles Davis remains 'popular'? Commercial success and popular relevance are barely mentioned when we consider those artists and those are Prince's contemporaries.

Mile Davies and Jimi Hendrix are not Prince's contemporaries they are from the previous decades. Miles Davies was a serious jazz musician. Prince was a pop artist...they are not comparable.

Obviously artists from the 60s and 70s are not comparable to Prince for obvious reasons...peak popularity with arlier less techy generations. Artists from the 80s and 90s are directly comparable.

And as for who I consider suitable, I am not arrogant enough to think I have a valid opinion and I'm humble enough to want my favourite artist to be recognised by his industry, and grateful that artists want to pay him tribute.

Thanks for the prompt on Spotify popularity. Out of the following guess who has the least monthly listeners:

-michael Jackson
-madonna
-george Michael
-phil Collins
- his holiness the Lord Prince
-celine Dion
-Whitney Houston
-bon Jovi
-U2
-REM
-the police

Yes it's the better than all of them holier than holy Prince...shame he was a pop artist and not a jazz or clasical musician..that way he could be listened to less but appreciated more for his musicianship.

What kind of music do you like? I'm happy to talk about new music, there's plenty good stuff being made but obviously depends on taste.

Autotune can be a pain for sure but I see it like how people used to see drum machines, i'm sure there were people accusing Prince of being talentless because he was using them without realizing how he was using them, even P was playing around with autotuner towards the end. Besides which, plenty of my favourite vocalists were bad singers so autotune doesn't apply.

I (obviously) agree with you about Prince's talent but I also know that it's a fiction that we couldn't get new releases from the estate without these silly kinds of tributes - look at some of the barely one hit wonders who get expanded boxsets of their releases. Anyone who says these things aren't possible is either misguided or is looking to make a buck and thinks they won't get it if it doesn't sell a certain amount.

But once again, i'm not going to stop this tribute from happening, I see no reason to pretend I'd love it though.

Good modern artists who don't rely on autotune:

Mayer Hawthorne
Tuxedo
Ekkah
Boulevards
Harts
Gavin Turek
Juanes
Moniquea

All of the above artists have named Prince as a primary influence and I know 3 of them personally and I can tell you for a fact that they fully intend on keeping Prince's spirit alive for years to come.

Mind you, autotune and other things like vocoders/talkbox can be used to good effect. The likes of Chromeo, Diamond Ortiz and XL Middleton use vocal effects well.

I am going to still watch the Grammy.

But I am still waiting for a real tribute one time event

That consist of:

1978-81 bandmembers (I am open to include his pre-1978 band so people would be school how this was all begin and yes Prince was doing music with a band before he got the record deal so their voices would be included)

1982-86 bandmembers

SOTT/Lovesexy band and bring Sheena Easton along if she wants to do it

NPG bandmembers with two lineups at least 90s NPG and 00/10 lineup

Plus associates

Morris Day and the Time

Sheila E and her crew

The Family

Jill Jones

Appollonia 6 lineup with of course age appropriate clothing

90s and 00s and 10s associates lineup

Make this shit like a Prince version of Woodstock like a two to four day event or something at Paisley Park or somewhere in Minnsota. Televise it or do a fundraising event since Prince was all about giving back.

And they are still alive and are able to play but that can change in another decade or two.

Messages to associates. Put yall damn egos aside and lets do this. Like Prince said Its all about the music. Message to the estate get some experts into this if you guys don't know what to do. So many people have great ideas if you let them in.

I think Cat Glover also suggested this as well.

Exactly. Prince wasn't a solo artist that need other non-associate musicians to play his tributes where his own bandmembers should had been contact first. I understand its all about attracting stars for these tributes but most people would still enjoy the songs no need to constantly attract star power (since when that is revelent in 2020 when this younger generation are making their own stars over some internent sensation by some previously unknown person).

He already had his own bands who not only alive but healthy enough to play these tributes. The industry should had contact them first before getting the likes of Beck, Foo Fighters, etc. I mean don't get me wrong they are talent but still show some respect toward his bandmembers who helped Prince to get where he was at.

I remember Wendy and Lisa said on their social media page that they were overlook when it come to Prince documentary scoring gigs yet some of the songs they helped to do and they are right. Give them some Prince scoring gigs that the least people can do since they lost some opportunities to do Prince tribute gigs. Plus they were there with the writing not just touring.

The logistics of this happening are enormous. Perhaps if they start planning now for something in, say, 5 years from now it could be done. I would love to be there to experience an event like this.

Because tributes from ex associates show the extent to which the artist has influenced his field...NOT....honestly I don't understand these exceptionalist isolationist and at times arrogant views...except that they were germinated by the man himself when he felt screwed over by Warners...which was not him at his best so not a source of sentiment worth replicating...

I will definitely watch, but I'm not expecting greatness. Only Prince could give us that. I think Alicia will do a good job and we know Prince liked her. He requested her to induct him into the RRHOF, so he must've liked her and I personally think she has some real talent unlike some of those other's that do NOT! I'm happy to know Sheila E is involved. I also hope they do something different than a showcase of his hits. I'd love to see obscure songs for a change. It will be interesting to see what Beck does too and glad to see Mavis will be there along with EWF! It might not be as bad as some think.

Because only Prince is capable of greatness.....you lot need to get off the stuff you are smoking and accept that Prince is not the only one capable of doing great things with Prince's music
D some times others do it better ...Sinead O Connor and Chaka Khan say hi

I remember Wendy and Lisa said on their social media page that they were overlook when it come to Prince documentary scoring gigs yet some of the songs they helped to do and they are right. Give them some Prince scoring gigs that the least people can do since they lost some opportunities to do Prince tribute gigs. Plus they were there with the writing not just touring.

[Edited 1/11/20 13:07pm] [Edited 1/11/20 13:13pm]

Okay I don't understand what Warner brothers have anything to do with this tribute?

But all I am saying is that I wish these tributes would have mainly consist of people who played (credited or uncredited) on Prince's songs and they should been ask first before adding on people who were merely fans of Prince music or played with him one time. I am not a big complainer because I am happy for Grammy tribute with Prince and I am happy the Revolution and the Time and Sheila E is involved, because at least its something, but I want to see more his bandmates get involved who are not outside of PR spectrum who has the capabilty to play various music from his eras. They were there with Prince through the good and bad through thick and thin, sweat and tears. When it comes to Prince, I try to be the voice for his talent bandmembers/singers who to this day doesn't get the props they deserved in this business but yet help his success and sorry even genuises like Prince didn't became successful by himself.

Prince is the only 1 who got Prince to where is was.

This a grammy tribute to PRINCE, not his ASSociates.

Thank you for that list. I recognize one name- Juanes. But that's only from someone mentioning the name here. I will look up their music. It makes me happy that these artists have said that Prince is a big influence on them. Warms my heart.

Good modern artists who don't rely on autotune: Mayer Hawthorne Tuxedo Ekkah Boulevards Harts Gavin Turek Juanes Moniquea All of the above artists have named Prince as a primary influence and I know 3 of them personally and I can tell you for a fact that they fully intend on keeping Prince's spirit alive for years to come. Mind you, autotune and other things like vocoders/talkbox can be used to good effect. The likes of Chromeo, Diamond Ortiz and XL Middleton use vocal effects well.

No problem. It's nice to know that good music is still out there. Even though nowadays you need to look harder to find it.

Would have loved for D'Angelo and Janelle to be part of it.

Trying to cop tix since yesterday in the resale area. Cheapest there is now as I look is $350 plus $80 resale fee. SMH.

And you have to buy in blocks of two. SMH

eek eek eek

That´s insane.

And yes, D Angelo and Janelle should be part of it.

Not sure how I feel about Sheila E being involved again.

And Eric Benet should stay the fuck away from anything Prince related.

That´s a cool list and most of them definitely deserve to be invited but I think the majority of casual fans and Grammy Award viewers wouldn´t even know who those people are.

I think Jill Jones and Cat are two very important people in Prince history but most folks today couldn´t tell you who those two are. The Grammy Awards have to play it safe and use more wellknown people, regardless of how the hardcore fans feel about it.

I appreciate your passion for those who did share the "blood, sweat and tears" of the early days.

Prince borrowed/shared from all of them and he did not come to his position by himself.

I feel a sadness for many of the fairly unacknowledged early folks, Jill, Andre, Jesse etc. In a perfect world, I would prefer to listen to these musicians at the Grammys as i know the history as do many of us.

Of course, this is Big Business now and it won't happen.
