REARRANGE

the guitar riff - Sexy Dancer

popping beat
the guitar play reminds me of that static feel from the Controvery music like on Private Joy in2 Ronnie Talk 2 Russia

I love the chorus and first lines vocal arrangement

Rearrange, your mind

man you've got to be drunk

2 think we'd stoop so low

and play that old time funk

Rearrange, your mind

Loosen up your hair

u gotta do things in a different way

if u want to get anywhere

For many years the consensus regarding this version of Something In the Water was that it was actually recorded a year or so after the album version but now it is among these 81-82 songs. I couldn´t find any detailed info regarding this version of SITW. The entry o Princevault refers to the album version´s recording and re-recording in April 1982. The first time I heard this 4 minute version of SITW was in the early 90s on the Studio Nights bootleg.

Does anybody know more about this version?

I'm not sorry but WoW BOLD GENERATION would have been perfect for the White Time Is It? album, I think it would have been a strong piece giving the Time a 'larger' world viewpoint. A more defining statement for the Time

.

Bold Generation is an unreleased song recorded on 11 January, 1982 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (on the same day as Gigolos Get Lonely Too) during recording sessions for The Time's second album What Time Is It? album.

Although it is likely that only Prince and Morris Day appear on the track, it is listed as a song by The Time here as it was intended for the group, and the majority of The Time's tracks only feature these two musicians. The song was discarded, and remains unreleased.

If It'll Make U Happy

Loveing this, I love how there is just an undercurrent of electronic vibes over such organic sounds

Caribbean flurishes, feels like Morris's drumming

Strong vocals, chorus. Sound like Prince, Morris and one other person maybe Jesse or BrownMark or Dez there are definately more male voices than Prince.

.

I didn't mean 2 leave u

but I had 2 go

if changing my life

would make U happy

tell me how 2 make it so

I wanna make U happy

Do whatever u say

and if it would make u happy girl

I'd come home right away

I'd give u all my money

if that would make you smile

if you're lonely
I'd come home baby

All u gotta do is dial

I really love U baby

No matter what your friends may say

and if it would make u happy girl

I'd come home right away...

Wow, I didn’t know ‘Bold Generation’ and ‘Gigolos’ were recorded on the same day. I love both of these songs.
So far I’m loving Bold Generation and Rearrange on the Vault Track CD. I agree with OF4S that the guitar riff on Rearrange = Sexy Dancer. I also hear some ‘Controversy’ in there. Some of the guitar parts on Rearrange are very Santana-esque.
‘If it’ll make u happy’ and ‘How come u don’t call me anymore’ are other stand-outs for me. I haven’t finished listening to the whole thing, though.

Vagina's opening and some of the riffs in the song remind me of "I Am" from the Deliverance EP.

VAGINA is a stand out to me. A great and weird and insansly catchy little tune with some searing guitar work.

The guitar riff on Rearrange is not the Sexy Dancer riff.
It's Lady Cab Driver.

I get a bit of Bowie vibe from Vagina.

I'm trying really hard not to listen too much and wait for my vinyl to arrive.

Bold Generation has just floored me. An absolute killer track - I simply can't understand how it got left behind for so long. It is the most Funkadelic-sounding song he's ever done, in my opinion. I can't fathom why he would record overtop the 2" (according to Michael Howe) and I desperately hope a better source surfaces at some point.

.

Rearrange is great - slightly less catchy to me at first, but it grew quickly. It is not nearly as similar to Lady Cab Driver as the reviews suggested. While clearly he rearranged the song under a different premise, he didn't borrow any tracks from this demo in its recreation. Another stunning "Why did this get left behind?" moment.

.

In a similar vein, You're All I Want is great and the clear prototype for Horny Toad. While I think Horny Toad was more of a success, this track's production quality is immense. I could see it being put on HitNRun 3 and nobody batting an eye.

.

Great to hear Feel U Up and Irresistible Bitch in such great quality though Feel U Up is a head-scratcher. The fact his vocal is buried in the mix, the fact it is not a seamless transition between the two, and the fact the fidelity changes dramatically when it switches over. Michael Howe made it clear they were two independent songs from independent sources (ie. not tracked together on the 2"), but I would think they could've worked on these two a bit more.

.

Prince's choice to add the staccato-style vocal arrangement here (reminiscent of "Pop Life" etc) is a strange choice to me when comparing to the leaked snippet which is quite beautiful. At one point, the vocals sort of trip on each other because of this, so I find it a little distracting when wearing cans. It ends up puling my ears in opposite directions for sec. Other than that, brilliant and sincere song.

I've always been under the impression that it was Dez singing with Prince on this one. In fact, I could've sworn I read somewhere that he co-wrote the song with Prince as well, but I can't find any confirmation of that?

"Rearrange" is defintely my favorite of this set. It reminds me of "Lady Cab Driver," "The Stick," and "The Walk." Still, it has it's own vibe, especially the arrangement of the melody.

.

"Bold Generation" and "Money Don’t Grow On Trees" are also favorites. The former is just too funky and very catchy and the latter has some great rhythm guitar on it.

Unfortunately I don't like this version of Irresistible Bitch and I can't stand Colleen. Overall a great disc of unreleased material and I'm glad to have it smile

Feel U Up/ Irresistible Bitch
Ever since I became a fan of Prince and got into the bootlegs, I've dreamed of hearing this is decent quality. It's a shame they fucked up the mix. On Feel U Up, the background vocals synths are too quiet - especially during the stabs on the instrumental bridge. Really ameture. The transition from one to the other is very poor and considering they mixed this from the multitracks, they could have removed most of the hiss by cutting the vocal tracks when he stopped singing. Then we have Irresistible Bitch... For most of it, there's a synths track that's mixed roughly 60% to the left and then mixed probably about 85% to the right is another synth track and the guitar. It's very off-balance and a real shame.

Money Don’t Grow On Trees
This one grows on me the more I listen to it. It's jolly. And I love the sound of the drums.

Vagina
What a track! It's very catchy and much better than I expected (after reading the lyrics). At first, it sounds incomplete or just an idea, but that obviously the intent and highlights the background vocals and hand claps when they come into the composition.

Rearrange
At first, this is a trippy listen with all of it's Lady Cab Driver-ness. The lyrics are rebellious-young-Prince at his near-greatest. Smome excellent vocal arrangements and guitar that has a 777-9311 vibe to it. The drum track is very low in the mix.

Bold Generation
This is rebellious-young-Prince at his greatest! Firstly, how did he record over the master? Secondly, how did he turn this great track into something so mediocre? Obviously, this isn't complete - I imagine has he stuck at it, he would have done something incredible to play the song out.

Colleen
I can see why he didn't return to this, but I could imagine it to be more interesting with a vocal arrangement.

International Lover (Take 1) [Live In Studio]
I'm not sure why everyone has praised this so much. I was really excited to hear this, but the natural register just doesn't work for me on this.

Turn It Up
Too repetative. Not one I'll be returning to frequently.

You’re All I Want
Another rockabilly - and I like this one! And I'm not sure why. I read in another thread that a non-falsetto version exists, which I would love to hear, if it exists.

Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)
I'm sure this will make a lot of people happy! Although the copy I have is titled as "Original Version", which I though this was a rerecording? I would certainly take a live version over this or the album version any day, but the piano is pleasant to focus on in the mix.

If It’ll Make U Happy
I've been wanting to hear this for a very long time! But... The Pop Lifeish vocal reverb is a bit distracting. I would certainly prefer a full version of the leak snippet.

How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore? (Take 2)
This is worth the price admission! I have not been able to stop listening to this. I'm rather surprised this is Take 2, given that it sounds like he's working out the song - but that part of this version's charm. Hisvocals are absolutely beautiful and who ever mixed this did an excellent job.

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

Is the distorted guitar that plays the melody at at the beginning of Rearrange (00:08 - 00:22) slightly out-of-tune?

01 Feel U Up

Always loved the long stroke of the 1989 version, loved hearing this so clean here.

02 Irresistible Bitch

Love his vocals on this. He sounds so mad.

03 Money Don’t Grow On Trees

The first song on the set I had never heard before. It's catchy. I like it.

04 Vagina

The lyrics were certainly interesting. The song isn't bad though.

05 Rearrange

This was my favorite on this disc. I enjoyed the heavy guitar work

06 Bold Generation

I've always liked "New power generation" so it was cool to hear an early version.

07 Colleen

Interesting track. Unfinished but not terrible.

08 International Lover (Take 1) [Live In Studio]

I like how playful this version is.

09 Turn It Up

I've had this on bootlegs for decades but it was cool to hear.

10 You’re All I Want

11 Something in the water (does not compute)

12 If It’ll Make U Happy

I'll need to hear these ones again a few more times. I'm trying to do this from memory after only 2 listens. There was a lot to digest

13 How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore? (Take 2)

Gonna be honest, I like the released version much better and would have loved to hear a version where it doesn't fade at the end. I didn't care for the faster piano playing at the beginning. Still cool to hear this version.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.
