No Call U sounds totally different than the boot! Is it a different take even? I've not compared them yet. Maybe it's just the clairity making it sound different - i was a bit shocked at how 'clean' it sounds, I quite liked my dirty nasty lo-fi version!!!

Also interesting how he tried a different 'style' on HCUDCMA, a bit forced at the end IMO and i think he made the right decision on which version to release. Still very nice to hear!

My biggest surprise is how much I'm enjoying If It'll Make You Happy.

Vagina kind of sounds like the demo version(s) of Sister, I wonder if he had finished it would he have ramped up the speed?

Question to the bootleg experts: Are there any bootleg tracks we can get rid of now?

I guess the old Moonbeam Levels and the snippet of If It'll Make You happy are useless now? What about Do Yourself A Favour and Possessed? Any notable differences to the previously circulating bootleg recordings?

Thanks!

You can definitely get rid of:

Do Yourself A Favor
Possessed
Moonbeam Levels
Don't let him fool ya
No Call U
Turn It Up
Feel U Up
Irresistible Bitch
Delirious (full)
Purple Music

I would keep:

Something in the Water (no fade in)
If It'll Make U Happy (if you like the minimal lead vocal)
Yah U Know (1986 mix)
Teacher Teacher (1986 mix)

So Bold Generation is definitely more listenable than New Power Generation but it still mostly sucks imho. I may be wrong but it does sound like an early attempt at what DMSR achieved though, I wonder if it was the first draft in that line (assuming Extraloveabe was draft 2 if Dr Funkenberry is to be believed).

Hang on to Feel U Up. The one that ended up preceding IB on this set is a different mixdown of the track and definitely not the one previously circulating.

Hang on to Purple Music as well, there are bits and pieces in the new mix that are absent from both boot versions

It's clear that the multitracks run much longer than what is provided here on almost every selection on this set. I would actually like to hear 'Delirious' and 'Something in the Water' without the fadeouts.

. Their attempts to fill out and give 'retrowave mixes' to FYU, IB and IIMUH went too far.

Can't believe Bold Genereation is a template for New Power Generation which, together with Lemon Crush and Arms Of Orion, makes up the trinity of Prince's downfall. Ironically this had the oppurtunity to be included on 1999 in favor of... Free. THE worst song he ever recorded up until Arms Of Orion. So Bold Generation is only associated with a big pile of steaming hot garbage really. The song itself however is the best song on Pt1, didn't see that coming! I love this and I'm going to erase Free on my 1999 playlist and include this or How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? (Take 2)

For "If It'll Make U Happy", they haven't done anything. This is the final mix made by Prince and Peggy.

Are you sure it´s an early version? I asked this on page 1 of this thread but to no avail, and Bluegangsta was the only one who, like me, felt a bit confused regarding this song.

I´m pretty sure that we´ve had a couple of discussions about this version and some people back then posted that this was actually a version that was recorded a year after the album version.

Sooo.....was that info incorrect, or did the guys who were in charge of this album confuse the date of this song (which is probably very unlikely if they got the dates on the tapes).

.

I first heard this version on the Studio Nights bootleg in 1995.

Just finished the first disc of outtakes. Really glad to have some kf the old favorites in such clear quality. Turn It Up has been I loved since first listen several years ago. Feel U Up/Irresistible Bitch has never sounded better. I honestly kinda taken aback when I heard them; there were so many details I could never make out in their bootlegged forms. That groove they’re on is so sick and there are some great effects (again, that i could never really make out before) on them that are just mind melting.
The real gems on this disc for me, however, the first take of International Lover and the second take of How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore? I like the laid back feel of these versions of the songs. And while Prince arguably did release the better takes, the fact these could even rival them is a testament to his power.
I also really dig If It’ll Make U Happy.
The other tracks were more or less forgettable for me. Money Don’t Grow On Trees is nice, but not all that interesting. Same goes for Vagina (though at the lyrics on this one are something to write home about). Rearrange is better, but I bet the 88-ish remix suits its ideas best. Bold Generation - and I know I’m in the minority here - is underwhelming and I prefer NPG.

Bold Generation is already a classic for me. Only for the fact that I can compare it to NPG and laugh at the travesty. Musically it's lightyears ahead. That piano, bass and funky guitar come together in perfect harmony.

Could be a similar issue to Possessed - Prince apparently overdubbing the track at a later date and bootleggers/traders thinking that was the basic tracking. I am not sure how much sense it would make for Prince to rerecord the song after it's release unless it was for some single that never happened.

To me, it sounds more like a demo and that he made it weirder as time went on. As beautiful it is, it is a much more standard track than what is on the album.

I also thought No Call U was a totally different song. I had to listen to it multiples times and pay close attention to the way he sang the lyrics to realize it was the same song. All of the songs sound a bit different when cleaned up, but No Call U sounds dramatically different.

Part of that is because the ancient bootleg has circulated in about 3 different speeds in terribly quality and with the first minute and a half chopped off.
